I was in the Toroweap area for about twenty-four hours total and completed three separate hikes. The first two involved yet another hike down and back to/from the Colorado River, an intervening sandwich and beer, and then an ascent of an inactive volcano, which together I’m blithely dubbing Hole to Hump(s). Yes, I know how difficult the actual H2H is to complete. And yes, I realize these two challenges really don’t compare, besides the river and exticnt volcano aspects. I’m almost certain I’ll never compete the real deal. So, please spare us any unnecessary snarky comments about only a playful comparison. The third hike was a Saddle Horse loop with a few side trips added on. It was an enjoyable stay after not visiting for a few decades.

We did this hike on the morning of our drive out. The view points just off trail are pretty spectacular and the snow made it pretty memorable. A great little trail to do if camping at Toroweap.

While car camping at Tuweep campground, we would hike the Saddle Horse Loop twice. The first day was cold and clear. The second day was overcast with two inches of snow on the ground. We couldn't resist another hike to the viewpoints and it was well worth the effort. My photoset will contain pics from both days.

Ended up doing this short loop a couple of times during our stay. There are several viewpoints that are worthy of leaving the trail to visit. After two nights of great sunsets and one morning of disappointing sunrise light, morning three brought the magic after about 2 inches of snow coated the area before daybreak. The snow level was about 500 feet above the river, with accumulating snow far down into the canyon. What a great experience, and amazing views in all directions and a whole new experience on the long drive out!

In the Grand Canyon Toroweap Overlook area there are a couple scenic trails. Saddle Horse Loop being one of them. It is more of a stroll out across the plateau than anything. At .25 of a mile in, the trail nears the canyons edge. Here if you step closer to the edge you get some of the most spectacular views of the river I have ever seen. It is straight down and is very cool. The rest of the trail is a nice meander.

Camped here. What a spectacular place. Went a couple of walks along the rim and along Tuckup.
