The sand was so fine that I could literally see the tracks of beetles as they crossed the sand. Hundreds of tracks ranging from beetles and birds to snakes, rabbit and deer. That was the only cool thing about this part of the hike. Felt like I was hiking with half the sand dune in my shoes. The trail/(track) is labeled as 102. It splits off a couple of times. Just keep on the one heading in a generally eastward direction. It took about 2.85 miles to reach the wash. The trail is not signed at this point. But just stay in the wash and head upstream. It's kind of ironic how the wash was much firmer than the ATV that I came in on. Follow the wash for about .9 miles. There will a single hoodoo off to the right. The entry point for the slot canyon will be on the far left. I was in there too early to have the sunlight play off the walls, but I was still impressed with what I saw. The slot canyon is divided into three sections...the canyon will open up a couple times between slots. The slot was pretty awesome. There was a dripping spring high up on a moss covered wall. I could hear the water dripping into a pool above me. The other cool feature is what appeared to be animal (maybe dinosaur) tracks going up the side of the wall. Need PaleoRob to confirm. Overall very cool slot canyon, though admittedly this was only my third slot canyon. Most people who do this canyon take ATV's down to the slot. |
