Ref: This remote and completely "off trail" hike is a variation of my Byous Butte Loop w/Hewitt Ridge Cyn Hike I will call.. Byous Butte Main Drainage-Hewitt Ridge Hike ;

I first discovered this remote area last Jan 1, 2009, and soon after completed this subject HAZ Hike Description. Upon arriving at our New Years Day'09 ending destination.. http://www.hikearizona.com/phoZOOM.php?ZIP=82624 I knew I had to return to try and find a way above this 40' Waterfall Class 3 Area to see all that was beyond.

This Christmas Day'09 was my planned return hike. I knew I needed another adventurous hiker to join me and fortunately our HAZ-nonot(Steve) was interested. We started in at 10am from what I call the TH Start at the intersection of FR172/Main Byous Butte Drainage which is very close to the TH Parking area at Byous Spring/FR172 (see my posted GPS Route for all details). Steve led the way and with his good eye for canyoneering and after some scrambling up the NW side of this Class 3 area.. http://www.hikearizona.com/phoZOOM.php?ZIP=117260 ,we successfully made our way up to part-of what I had waited a year to see.. http://www.hikearizona.com/phoZOOM.php?ZIP=117265 :y: .

On my attached pic set I have included a considerable amount of pic caption detail to help add some clarity to this most enjoyable, remote, and scenic area to explore. My sincere thanks to Steve for joining me and with his partial loop hike idea to connect with my Saddle#1 hiking route back to our campsite (as opposed to hiking back out the way we came in), I/we now have a whole new remote area opened-up to explore for my next trip here :GB: .. http://www.hikearizona.com/phoZOOM.php?ZIP=117271

This Jan 1st 2009 was very rewarding beginning with the early morning greeting of a beautiful sunrise(over Byous Butte at our campsite), through our planned day hike loop with a special side trip to a less visited, remote canyon spur in hidden Hewitt's Ridge, and ending with a wonderful gourmet dinner, a nice campfire, and friends to share with the days' events.

I had been planning for the past two years to find the right time to try this rugged-mostly off trail, only 3.7ml loop hike, but requiring 5 hours of needed patience & persistence to complete. Today, January 1st was the right day! :DANCE:

Please see my attached trip "pic set with detailed note captions" to walk-you- through our rewarding adventure this day! I do also hope that some of you might review my new HAZ hike description and have an interest in doing this intermediate hike. IF you wait long enough there will be a defined route through..as I shall return! :D
