Decided to check out Red Rock Canyon while in Vegas. White Rock Loop looked like a logical choice, so I decided on that, and started from Lost Creek TH in the CCW direction.

The front half was kinda meh, didn't really start getting interesting until near the saddle on the back side. By that point there was snow on the ground, and it got quite chilly dropping into La Madre canyon. That area was much more interesting.

Took the La Madre Trail up to the spring and back; it was a worthwhile diversion.

Back at the Willow Springs parking lot, I diverged onto the Willow Springs trail to Lost Creek, and then found the waterfall. Worth the short side trip. From there, less than a half mile back to the car.

Red Rock Canyon was a little more interesting than I expected it to be, but still something I wouldn't really go too far out of the way for.

This was wife & I's sixth romantic, early Christmas, Las Vegas getaway in the past seven years. We don’t gamble much, but usually manage to come away with a small profit ($60). Mostly, we visit family, take in a museum, see a show and, for me, hike. This year, it was the National Atomic Testing Museum, Dave Landau (a hilarious comic: http://davelandau.com/ ), and the White Rock – La Madre Spring Loop.

(Before the shooting, we had considered trying out Mandalay Bay, but now that would be bad juju. We did check out the Ri Ra Irish Pub, though.

I again hiked clockwise, as I prefer to warm up my legs for a mile or two before I begin climbing.

I stopped by White Rock Spring. the spring box was full, and fairly clear, with some floating greenery of the non-slimey variety. Possibly the most interesting thing I saw all day were the seeds / eggs along the edge of the cement box. They looked like large tomato seeds. There were tons of them.

The petroglyphs I expected at the Willow Creek Picnic Area, and which signage indicated should have been directly in front of me, at the base of White Rock Hills, were not there. And I took my time looking. Apparently, the Petroglyph Wall Trail (.25 miles, 25 AEG), on the south side of Rocky Gap Rd. has petroglyphs. If I had known that at the time, I would have checked it out. Instead, I was bummed.

I made the mistake of trying to follow a trail out of the picnic area, and ended up in a small wet land, inadvertently threatening some protected snail species or another. Sacre bleu!

A quarter mile short of La Madre Spring, there are two old ranches. All that remains is the foundation and a bit of piping. Looks like they had indoor plumbing via the spring. It's a shame the feds tore them down, instead of renting them as cabins, because they had sweet views.

La Madre Spring was flowing pretty good, and the water was clear. But I am a wuss, so I didn't drink it and forgot to dip my toes in it. I was focused on taking photos & video. La Madre Spring had plenty of wet land type grasses, and even an old dam. Getting down in the creek, and improvising a rocky 'tripod' got me some decent flow video.

It was a short jaunt back to the loop trail at the base of the White Rock Hills. I passed seven people on their way up, so figured if I was to take a trailside pee, I best do it now, before the circus showed up. Good call. I encountered several dozen more people the final 2.5 miles back to the White Rock Trailhead.

On the 40 minute hike up to the saddle at the north end of the White Rock Hills, the junipers were loaded with berries. I spent most of that time closely scanning the skyline and crevasses of White Rock Hills, hoping to see some big horn. No such luck. Struck out two straight visits. Still the only big horn I’ve seen in Nevada was a male crossing the road in Valley of Fire.

At the saddle, even though I was on a high point, with clear line of sight towards Las Vegas, I had zero bars Verizon reception. Tweeting some hike pix would have to wait.

On the way from the saddle down to the White Rock TH, there some decent views of the Calico Hills and, in the distance, Blue Diamond Hill. but for the most part the scenic stuff was behind me. Speaking of which, there were zero flowers on this hike, not even on the few cacti. (Nevada hiking is much less stabby than Arizona.)

After a shower, it was off to the MGM Grand, fighting through the rodeo finals crowd, to see Dave Landau. My wife died laughing.

I decided to head back out to Red Rock Canyon on Tuesday since I had noticed some other trails I wanted to try. In the morning, I had stopped by the Pro fuel terminal on the northeast side of Vegas and visited with my husband's employees for a while. And I had also wanted to steal some Pro baseball caps I had seen some pics of earlier. The guys had some additional trail suggestions (next trip!) for me, gave me about six hats, and fed me breakfast, so I didn't get started on my hike as early as I would have liked. I parked at the White Rock parking lot for this one. I started the loop from the north end of the parking lot. A short distance in, I turned off onto the Keystone Thrust trail to check that one out. It's about a mile each way--nothing exciting, but worth doing since I was right there. Once I did that, I got back on White Rock and continued on. The scenery is really pretty on this part of the trail, and keeps getting better as you head northwest. It's an easy trail, and easy to follow. After awhile, I was in a valley on the backside of the hills you see from the parking lot. This area was probably my favorite section of the hike--lots of juniper, smooth trail, great views of mountains all around--I was sad when this part came to an end. I took the turnoff to La Madre Spring and walked the 1/2 mile up to it. There was a decent amount of water back there, and shade, so I stopped and had lunch next to the spring. I returned back to White Rock trail and continued the loop. The trail merges with Rocky Gap Rd and follows it to the Willow Spring parking area. This is where I thought it started getting boring. At the parking area, I followed Willow Spring Trail for a while to avoid walking on the road. At the second parking area to the east, White Rock trail picks back up again and curves around the east side of the hills. Saw some burros again, but nothing else was all that interesting for these last couple of miles. Just before the parking lot is White Rock Spring. It had some water, and the trough was full.

A quick spin around the loop. It was pretty hot, so saw only a few other people. Clouds and breeze toward the end really helped.
As I hiked back to my car, a ranger came speeding up and asked if I had seen anyone lost. Some vacationers had rented a car, parked it at the trailhead, wandered off, then called in to say they didn't know where they were or how to get back to the car. Well, I sure hope they had taken water because it was hot, especially for someone not accustomed to the desert.
With the increased humidity today, the cicadas were starting to sing :D

First order of business was a scramble up the watercourse in a unnamed canyon. Waterfalls, flowers, and frogs. So many tiny frogs :D The flow isn't tremendous, but it seems to be perennial based on the algal mats and vegetation. Nice limestone canyon with welcome flowing water. Took my time and really enjoyed it.

That part was fun, but it wasn't really long enough, so added on White Rock Loop. Pretty hot, and I only saw one other person. Cactus fruits are ripe and delicious.

It was intensely windy today, so just a quick spin for my husband to familiarize himself with a GPS unit. He is going to be teaching an outdoors class, and it was suddenly sprung upon him that, oh by the way, you'll also be teaching the participants how to use a GPS unit... Fortunately, he already understood the basic principles behind a GPS and the unit was somewhat intuitive (although the users manual was less than useless), so we got to concentrate mostly on enjoying the cactus flowers along the hike. It was great to enjoy this loop with so few other people, but the severe wind keep the critters away.

After watching my husband watch the Lions totally blow it in the snow, I needed to get out and enjoy some hiking.
Hiked the loop clockwise from the White Rock trail head. Assuming the trail head parking would be full, I parked near the main road and walked, adding about an extra mile total. Turned out there was hardly anyone on trail and the parking was nearly empty - guess the cold temperatures deterred them.
It was chilly, making a brisk pace necessary. Proceeding around the back side, there was scattered snow under the trees. Nothing slippery or icy, so just a pleasant enjoyment of the snow. It was also very quiet and still - that feeling of anticipation like it wanted to snow some more.
Ended this hike just as darkness was falling in earnest with a group of 7 mule deer.

Another day, another loop around White Rock. Parked near the main road and walked to the White Rock trail head to spare my car the rocky road.

Pretty different look to things today, though. Our recent system dropped almost 20 inches of snow in the Spring Mountains, so nice views looking up at the mountains. The low clouds combined to give some great lighting. Amazing, but only had my phone, so hard to say if the pictures will turn out. Pleasantly cool throughout the hike, until the very end when the wind picked up and the clouds moved lower. I was on the home stretch by then, though, so just moved faster instead of stopping for another layer. Then a mule deer jumped up pretty close, startling me so badly I forgot all about being cold, anyway :D

The trail was damp, but firm for hiking. Just one short stretch of mud on the back side.

Choosing Veteran's Day to visit the Red Rocks wasn't the best idea. In honor of the day, it was free to enter, and lot's of people did! It's great to see so many out enjoying nature, but it does slow down everything, from parking and waiting your turn to view scenic spots to actually trying to hike.

We ended up following an endless train of children up to the Willow Spring. Then we did an out and back from the Willow Spring parking lot to the White Rock Springs parking lot.

With limited time to hike today, I needed something close to home and not too long. White Rock Loop fit the bill perfectly.
Seems like a lot of other people thought so, too. It was hard to find parking, but glad I stuck it out. Nice temps, good solid hike. With so many people around, there were not many animals to be seen. Good to get out and stretch the legs anyway.

A quick trip around the loop, with a few short off-trail jaunts for some added fun.
Pretty warm, but not bad with a decent breeze most of the hike.
The trail was almost completely empty of people.

We saw mostly lizards on the hike, but one small garter snake in the road on the way in. I gave it a gentle tap on the tail with my finger and it moved off the road. Just in time as a motorcycle came speeding by.

Nice to go hiking on a day off.

Clockwise loop today.
It sprinkled on-and-off for the first 1/3 of the hike, then surprisingly cloudy for the remainder.

All the cacti are flowering their little hearts out.
Enjoyed some really nice Mojave mounds, hedgehogs, and cholla.
Yerba santa and cliffrose are flowering, too, making this hike a feast for the nose.

A little extra distance, as I had to park and walk up the road to the trailhead.

Parked at the Upper White Rock lot, and then went clockwise on the loop. Added in a quick jaunt up to La Madre Springs for an extra mile. Saw a few people on the trail, but less than I expected for the beginning of a long weekend and beautiful weather. Great scenery and good length, I'll probably be doing this one again!

Nice hike through the scattered snow.
Parked at Willow Springs and completed the loop anti-clockwise.
Not nearly as many people out as I expected, given the nice weather. One family with 2 small children provided several minutes of free entertainment :)

Not much in the way of wildlife other than a few scrub jays and one desert millipede making its way slowly across the trail.

Extra mile added to distance for a side trip to La Madre Spring where I enjoyed a nice lunch stop.

Hiked the loop clockwise. It was pretty hot, but the breeze kept conditions bearable. One ground squirrel, one scrub jay, 2 butterflies, and a few lizards were the only animal life on this one. The cactus fruits were ripe though - YUM!

I had toyed with the idea of doing a double loop, but decided to sidetrack onto the Keystone Thrust Trail instead. Good choice! This trail offers great views of, what else? - the Keystone Thrust Fault. This thrust fault is where 500 million year old limestone was forced up over 150 million year old sandstone, forming the Spring Mountains. The sandstone only remains on the surface as isolated outcroppings, which is what you see in Red Rock Canyon.

5 people and 2 dogs. All at beginning of my hike and all headed in the opposite direction.

My first official foray out of state, courtesy of my friendly host autumnstars. :) Really nice scenery on the west/snowy side of the mountain, but unfortunately no mountain goats were spotted. :(

p.s. Between me and my wife, we managed to leave Lost Wages with a $3 gambling profit. :D

Met up with Kingsnake and his lovely wife at the Red Rocks visitor's center bright and early on this crisp morning. The drive out was one of the most beautiful I've had, with a few low clouds and the rising sun hitting the Spring Mountains just right - even the limestone was glowing red. After chatting at the trail head for a while, Kingsnake and I set off down the trail, while his very understanding wife hung out.
The temperature was perfect with clear sunny skies. We took the loop clockwise, to get the rockier former road portion of the trail over with first. We saw a few other folks on trail, but not much wildlife other than a few scrub jays and miscellaneous small brown birds. I'm afraid it had been so long since I'd hiked with anyone new, we were chatting so much, we scared all the animals. ;) On the shadier part of the loop, there was more snow than when I was here 2 weeks ago - not enough to be dangerous or difficult, just a fun change of pace.
Nice day for a hike and fun to do my first hike with a fellow HAZ member.

Edit: I think this is the first time I can put an actual hiking time since kingsnake kept track.

A nice Sunday afternoon hike. Parked at White Rock and hiked the loop anti-clockwise. There was a bit of scattered snow remaining in the shaded spots behind every rock and shrub. Just a few birds - scrub jays and one raven. Not too many people out, likely due to the cold weather, but with no wind, it was beautiful for hiking.

I decided to brave Red Rocks on a weekend since it was a big football day which usually means thinner crowds. That plan was only semi-successful, but the hike was still good.

Parking at the White Rock trailhead, I hiked the loop clockwise to end with a slightly down-hill cool down. The White Rock loop has really nice scenery, and the trail is so easy to follow that you can actually look around throughout the hike. An old two-track through mixed blackbrush scrub on the south side gives way to a foot path through a juniper woodland on the north side. Today was a great hike with cool temps and a very friendly scrubjay following me. Soils were damp and there was a bit of snow hanging on in some protected spots among the rocks.
