Nice little ridge burn with good views of the Mazatzals and Stewart Pocket. Kind of like a mini-Mogollon. Better than expected, I thought it was going to be a thrash, but the route follows an old jeep track to the overlook. If I had property in Whispering Pines, this hike would likely be in my regular circuit, although the parking seemed kind of strange.

Little afternoon stomp going back to a spot I encountered four nice bulls that I ran into back in early February hoping to reconnect or find some of their goodies.
Found tracks everywhere but nothing too fresh as they have seemed to have moved out of the specific area which isn’t surprising as said before the LDR is a favorite for many of the skilled local hunters and does see quite a bit of activity by nearby residents and other longtime town outdoorsmen and woman.
Sunny days and a crisp spring breeze make for some truly perfect hiking weather lately in Rim Country.

Canyons, springs and tanks are healthy as can be in this awesome little
“Rim below the Rim” that I haven’t visited for awhile.
Divine t-shirt temperature weather was glorious roaming through slightly new sections of the LDR.
As said before there are many roads and hunter paths out here to be used but in between and all around there are plenty of sweeping views, tucked away spots and great off trail hiking country.

Searching HAZ, found this little gem. 64 degrees at the start was welcome, off the charts humidity was not. Must have rained the night before as the ground was sticky/muddy, which didn't last long. Finding geodes along the trail was awesome! Also found a bunch of oak apples aka gall wasp eggs, fascinating video dissecting one here, [ youtube video ] . Great views from the top. Didn't find the golf clubs. 90 degrees when we returned to Payson, WOW! A very pleasant hike.

Have stared at this mountain for years. Finally decided to climb to the top! As the descriptions says, you pretty much follow an ATV trail along the fence to the top. The entire top of the mountain is covered in geodes! A brief walk thru the burn area from the Wagon Wheel Fire a few years back. Found a couple of golf drivers hidden in the bushes by the summit. Guess someone likes to drive golf balls off the Rim. Wasn’t that an episode of Seinfeld?!

Hiked up the healthy flowing Bear Canyon up to the top of the LDR to a big southern view point and looped down the paralleling canyon to the east of it with a lot of meandering in between.
Windy on the rim edge, perfect in the canyons, saw plenty of cow elk but no bulls.
Stopped by the waterfalls below Second Crossing which look much better than my last checkup last year as right now the river is of course gushing strong and steady with heaps of snowmelt water.

Quick afternoon stroll through a slightly different path in the backyard.
The forest was so quiet today you could hear a pin drop from a distance, true tranquility.

Weather in Rim Country lately has been downright dreamy and feels nothing like December but I’m enjoying every bit of the sweet sunshine.

Little backyard fun.
Hunters out on the roads everywhere but once I got 500 feet off the road it was nothing but complete solitude for the next three hours.
Done a lot of hiking on the LDR but still so much ground to see and surprises to be found.
Perfect sunny windless day, truly perfect for a Saturday in December, as good as biting into a cold Honeycrisp Apple.

Some more LDR playground activities after work.
I’ve parked at Third Crossing and Waterwheel lately and have just gone straight up the east side.
My intrigue was to check out one of the many caves and alcoves along the cliffs faces that even after hearing from a local friend that they’re only “caves” I still think there has to be ruin evidence up there.
I only made it to two of them, I glassed up at least 6 more at a distance that I’d still like to check out.

Also was able to watch a solid elk herd forage, relax and best of all listen to a few bugling bulls make all sorts of noise which is always such a treat to hear.

The LDR area is always so pleasant on the weekdays, just don’t come here during a weekend ;)

Little after work jaunt attempting to go up the eastern side of the LDR.
Storms and smoke made for a weird inversion affect and the whole area became a windy haze of sketchiness topped off with some solid lightning.

I decided to call the hike for safety reasons and looped back down to my truck.
Everyone plays around the LDR but I truly never see anyone on or in the LDR itself which always makes for a good off trail playground with a remote feel that’s close to home.

The usual Friday evening post work hike to the backyard that has endless amounts of room to explore.
The LDR really doesn’t look like much on the maps but it has SO much more to offer in person, but don’t visit or anything like that, this is my happy place!

Waved to a game camera, found water in upper Bear Canyon and saw plenty of Wapiti as usual.
Super windy day everywhere else in Rim Country that day but the backside of the LDR that afternoon was choice and free of that nusance.

Finally completed a full scan/ascent/descent of Bear Canyon, only 44 more BC throughout Arizona to go!

Just another post work hike looking for animal parts.
LDR never disappoints, a little slice of solitude just minutes from home.

A bunch of whitetail and a very interesting actual little cave were the highlight of the afternoon!

I got an early start on this one, 7:00 am, with temps in the upper 60s. Several cow elk and their caves cross the trail about a half mile up. Temperature was probably in the 80s on the way down. With the exposure it got a little toasty. Worked the radio a little. Fun!
