Took it easy on my ankle, twisted it two weeks ago. So just tip toed up and down Wasson. Evidence of a mountain lion in the area, I could catch a whiff of one and quite a bit of scat around the trail.

Other than that, pretty low key hike up to the summit.

Didn't have anything exciting planned, so I decided to finally get to the top of Wasson Peak. Started from the end of El Camino del Cerro (which a friend later told me has had a lot of break-ins, but that didn't happen). Early on, I saw a crested saguaro; this one is probably hard to miss. Not a whole lot of people on Sweetwater Trail.

Once at the saddle, the crowds started appearing. Nice steady climb with good views - I liked how the trail from the saddle to the peak is constructed for the most part.

Felt pretty rough because I'm out of shape, but the summit was nice and cool. Hung out for 5 minutes or so. Felt good enough to jog most of the way down the mountain.

I'd definitely like to go back and do the loop via King Canyon and Hugh Norris.

Couldn't sleep and decided to get out of the house. Started in the dark around 5:30 and forgot how much I like hiking in the dark with my little bubble of light from my headlamp. Been hitting the gym the past 5 weeks and just doing short 3-4 mile hikes around my neighborhood. Post Thanksgiving bloat and too much holiday cheer really slowed me down.

Nothing too exciting. Perfect crisp hiking conditions and nobody to share the trail with.

Calibration for Sweetwater workout
20 minutes better than a 15 months ago.
10 minutes better than my previous best.
Not saying a lot, being I haven't done this precise workout very many times.
Getting hot.

According to my pollen count app, pollen is at 9.5 on a 10 point scale today. Fortified myself with 3 different asthma and allergy meds and hit the trail. The combo of everything I took gave me a nice boost, almost like an energy supplement from a truck stop.

Haven't been out much, so this was just a hike to see where my current fitness level it. Nothing too exciting to report, loads of people out today and the wildflowers are not out yet around here.

It wasn't really a gorgeous chamber of commerce day, but I was shocked to be the only car in the lot on a Saturday shortly after I arrived. The other 2 leaving as I started. I later learned this may have been due to Rodeo weekend. I guess. It was still unusual to be the only one out on the trail on a mild Saturday in snow-bird season. Ran in to several parties coming up as I was heading down, though. I guess full moon hiking is all the rage?

Apples to oranges: I felt like the trails here are covered in lots of loose rock, gravel, scree, debris, whatever you want to call it. I don't see that on the Finger Rock, Ventana or Old Baldy trails. Must be a Tucson Mountains thing, as it is like that on the Sombrero trails in spots.

Wasson variation to max FPM - TH to King Canyon jct, then 0.75 mi up the most significant section of the ridge, returning to the jct, repeat ridge ascent and back to the TH for 2,700' of gain.

Right at 32 deg to start - 39 deg at the end
Total time stopped was 26 seconds
Not a lot of people until the very end

It had been a while and since I wanted something for the New Year, and the weather was nasty keeping me from Kimball, I came here. It seemed to get worse right after I started as the wind really picked up and it felt more humid. In fact, as I check several local wunderground stations sure enough, a big temperature drop with wind increase happened right around when I began. It appears there was nearly 10 degree drop in an hour, with a big wind increase!

Otherwise, there appears to have been some needed trail maintenance from my last visit in August of 2022. Stair construction, and some wash crossing brush clearing, mostly. Nice.

Temps in the upper 60's to start and pretty pleasant up until the last 15-20 minutes. Up to Wasson and then down Sendero Esperanza to pick up a few extra miles and AEG. Back up S-E and came back down Sweetwater and back to the car.

Either they are patrolling the area better or the guys doing smash & grabs have moved on to greener pastures. Didn't see any evidence of broken glass from a car window anywhere in the parking lot.

Almost perfect weather today, 50 to start and 65 to finish and shockingly not much more than a few breezes on top. Got out nice and early, though nervous to start. Saw broken window glass in every parking spot and then spotted 3 busted windows in the dirt. Apparently someone has been busy here of late.

Quite noticeable that the NPS trail crew has been out here, the trail has been cleaned and groomed all the way up to the top of Wasson Peak. Easily shaved off 5 or more minutes just from not having to hop over trenches or watch out for rocks.

If coming for the wildflowers, you'll be disappointed. They are thin out here.

I prefer the loop but this was a good hike. If I lived in Tucson, then I would hike this regularly.

I wish the weather would improve so I could hike Wrightson, instead of dull winter hikes like this.

Rather hot to start at 4, but the storms built really fast. I was briefly caught in one with a lot of cloud to ground lightning. It came in fast, and moved out as fast. Then it was humid but tolerable for the rest of the hike with great storm views. Near sunset and after the lightning show was incredible.

1 rattler napping on the trail near the same place I heard one last week, just before the saddle, and 5 Javelina scattered in the traverse on descent. Poor-whils still abundant after sunset.

Warm or cool, depending on your perspective, but definitely not hot for a humid late afternoon and evening Wasson hike. Not bad. Trail isn't overgrown with weeds, so that is good. Really nice after sunset at the TH.

The crowds are gone for the heat of summer but the trail remains. On a "cool" late May day with a forecast high of 94 in town, I was able to hike this in temperatures which were probably cooler on the summit. It was still kind of hot. Not bad, and I endured no nausea, pounding headache or stomach cramps as I recall from extensive time outside in 110+, but the sun is strong, the rock radiates heat and I'm getting soft in my 40s. I don't think I would still hike Piestewa mid-day in 105-108 degrees the way I once did, if I was still in Phoenix.
