After the Dragonfly Trail we headed to City of Rocks to the southeast of Silver City. Before heading to City of Rocks Ginny and I stopped off at Faywood Hot springs to soak in the hot springs. We rented a private pool for an hour and relaxed. Will have to come back here and spend the night in one of the cabins.

At the City of Rocks we took a short 1.3 mile hike through the rock formations that make up the City of Rocks. These are volcanic Tuff outcrops, nothing real impressive but had to stop in and see what it was about. We then headed back to Silver City for the night. We headed to Hatch the next day to pick up 60 pounds of Hatch Chili, this should last us a year. There is a $5 charge for New Mexico Residents per car and $10 for out of staters.

The focal point of this trip to Las Cruces was to purchase a pint beer glass commemorating the 100th burning of Zozobra in Santa Fe on Friday August 30th. This was a joint effort by the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe and the New Mexico Brewers Guild. These glasses were not available to purchase online and had to be obtained on June 26th at one of the participating breweries around the state. Fortunately, one of the locations was Icebox Brewing Company in Las Cruces (don't have to twist my arm to go there : wink : ).

So, the quick road trip was set! Reserved a camp spot at City of Rocks SP for the night of the 25th. On my way over I took the scenic route up through Silver City with the obligatory stop for a brew at Little Toad Creek (they were not participating in the promotion). Then over to Bayard to pick up a burger and fries at Lotaburger to take to camp for dinner. :D I was treated to some nice sky drama during the evening to make things even better. :)

I had a lot of time to kill on the 26th since the Icebox on Picacho didn't open until 3 PM. That was the hardest part of the trip, since I didn't have anything else planned for Las Cruces and it was a very hot day. I drove around a lot killing time. Too hot to do anything outside, but eventually the time to get the beer glass arrived, and I had a brew at Icebox, bought the glass, and then started the drive back home. The mission was a success.

So, now here it is more than two months later, and I am enjoying an Icebox Hatch Green Chile Blonde Ale in the commemorative Zozobra glass as I write this triplog on September 1st. Friday evening I enjoyed watching the 100th burning of old man gloom at Fort Marcy Park via livestream on You Tube. :app: All is well.

Return day trip to finish what we started 8 years ago!
Our last visit in 2016 was cut very short by 50mph winds.
This day was perfect, clear blue sky and with no wind ... let's hit it.
We started from the visitor's center first hiking up to the top of Table Mountain.
Great trail up with outstanding views on top.
Next up we completed the entire outer loop around the "city" on the Hydra Trail.
Another good trail but, got a little long towards the end.
Table Mountain is the gem out there.
Last was the hike through and around the City of Rocks.
We had a lot of fun in the awesome boulder formations.
All the campsites tucked up in the boulders are some of the coolest I've ever seen!

It was a great visit.
Next time will have to be a camp during one of their star gazing events ... that would be 8)
:D

Needed to return from Deming, NM back to Flagstaff so I decided to take Highway 180 and stop at this state park and check it out. I paid my $5 fee online and put the pass on my dashboard. Started the Hydra hike right from the Visitor Center.

Wind was blowing a bit, and it was nippy...but I managed with shorts and a sweatshirt.

Overall, I wasn't blown away by the "groomed" Hydra trail...it's basically just a loop around the good stuff (the rocks). Had I known this post hike, I would have traded for the Table Mountain hike which overlooks the part and I think that would have been much more satisfying.

Was worth the visit.

Though it was a holiday weekend (which I loathe), I was surprised to see my favorite spot to camp here was available Monday, so I reserved it. :D I arrived at about 5 PM local time and pleasantly found that most of the holiday crowd had left the park. :y: It was pretty breezy, which is typical this time of year, but nothing to the level of annoying. Beautiful night and slept well, just what I needed. Enjoyed my morning leisurely, then headed to Silver City around noontime for a stop at Little Toad Creek Brewery. I enjoyed a couple of cold brews and a BS session with a random stranger at the bar (perfect). I purchased some of their Mixed Up Mule cocktails in a can to go, and then it was time to head home to Tucson. Fun. :)

Rode from Faywood Hot Springs to City of Rocks State Park. I road the HydraTrail (easy) and then road around the campground to look at the rocks and campsites.

I have not camped at this park since pre-covid days and there are some changes from the way it was before. Now virtually all the sites are on the state park reservation system, whereas before it was first come first served. Sites 40 to 45 and I think some of the electric sites are the only ones left first come first served. I didn't think this would matter, as there was virtually nobody there camping. However, the reservation system allows a person to reserve a site the day of arrival, which I think is ill-advised. Most such systems do not allow you to reserve a spot the day of arrival, which is good and avoids conflicts. Anyway, I learned all this while visiting with the campground hosts at the visitor center. So, the site I picked was a reserved spot, but as long as nobody showed up later in the evening there would be no problem. Otherwise, I would have to move to another site. With all the stormy weather of late I figured it would be fine and few people would be there that night. True that. :D Lesson learned, next time I will lock in my stay ahead of time.

I left Tucson about 0700, so got to Silver City around 1100 (lost an hour due to DST). I knew I had time to kill before getting to the state park, so I drove up to the Little Walnut Picnic Area, with the idea to maybe do a quick hike up to Gomez Peak, but it started thundering with light rain when I got there, so nixed that idea. Strong storms were expected in the area, so I wasn't about to mess around. :scared: Turns out the heavy weather was over on the Arizona side for the most part. :D

Back to Silver City to get ice and a few things, plus got a Subway sandwich for later at the CG. I stopped for a Lotaburger meal at Bayard as well. :) The weather was nice, no storms and some overcast skies to take the heat edge away. I spent most of the time wandering around the rock formations, always fun. I have always enjoyed visiting this low key state park! :D

Every time I visit New Mexico I come away with good feelings about the place. This time was no different.
In less than 24 hours at City of Rocks, I saw four javelinas, three pronghorns, two deer, and best of all one young and unafraid kit fox! That was on top of all the usual suspects - raven and other birds, lizards, cottontails and jackrabbits, and one very healthy rattlesnake that made time to come say hi at my campsite.
Hiking and scrambling around, over, and through the boulders was a blast.
The facilities are nice and clean, and other than the little RV park section, the campsites are really cool and fun, tucked up in among the rocks. I had reserved a site ahead because I didn't know if it would be crowded, but it seems like the first come sites are better. I was very happy with my spot in Pegasus, but walking around later found several sites I liked more - #30 was my favorite. This Friday night in September had plenty of open sites.
Lots more hiking and biking and bouldering to be done there, and especially with all the great wildlife, I will definitely be returning!

Fun side trip north of Deming on our drive back home from White Sands NM.
Friends told me not to miss this cool little park if I was ever in the area and I'm glad we checked it out!
After getting info from the visitor center, we planned on hiking the main (Hydra) trail that circles the park out in the flats, but ridiculous wind gusts up to 50mph altered that plan. Instead, we hiked the campground trails that meander through and around the volcanic rock formations that make up the "city". Very cool geological formations that have campsites built in-between the rocks, some columns rise up to 40 feet tall. We ended our 2 hour stay with a stroll through the desert botanical garden before leaving. I really liked this park and would love to return someday to camp & hike ..... just not during the windy season .....

It Was a Batsh#t Crazy Good Time...Again!

So my home for the night would be site #43. This is where I camped with my girlfriend in September 2005, as part of a road trip to celebrate getting back together after a 3 month breakup. (cue the music...What a Fool Believes... ) It is a small hidden site, certainly not the best in this great little park, but given that it was a holiday weekend, I was glad it was available. :)

As I was setting up the tent and getting situated, I heard a faint squeaking sound and noticed a deposit of guano below a cleft in the rocks. Bats. :o I knew this would make for an interesting night! Sure enough, when it was getting dark they started to fly out for night patrol. Actually it was kind of cool having them flying about overhead and through the rocks. :D As it got to be night they must have been mainly off elsewhere as activity diminished around camp.

As they were flying around, I kept hearing something hitting the tarp by the tent occasionally. Yep, little bat "droppings." So, when I finally called it a night, I put the rain fly on the tent, just in case my little friends had other gifts they might have wanted to bestow on me. [-X

In the first light of morning I could hear them flying around again, as they wound things down from their night ops, and prepared to roost up in the rocks. It took them awhile, that's for sure. That gave me time to try to get some video, once the light became sufficient. :)

After making my usual morning photo walk, it was time to head back to camp and have some coffee. A woman from Silver City walked up with her grandson from the site below, and we enjoyed some good conversation. Then it was time to pack things up and finish the drive home, roasted chile bounty in tow! :D Just another fun time on the road... :GB:

A stop on my return from an abbreviated trip to the White Mountain Wilderness area by Ruidoso. Recent rains freshened things up. My two favorite camp sites are number 6 and 38. Nice to have the place pretty much to myself except for the usual RV folks at the electric sites. Just love this state park!

A weekend road trip and car camp with Cindy. Spent two nights at City of Rocks State Park located between Silver City and Deming. This is one of my favorites, and it served as base camp for our hike to Hillsboro Peak on Saturday. Following the hike, we drove down through Kingston and Hillsboro, then south through Lake Valley and on to Deming and back to City of Rocks. Sunday it was up along the Mimbres to Lake Roberts and back to Pinos Altos, Silver City and then home. Very scenic area with lots to do and an easy drive from Tucson.
