We set out with the plan to paddle back into Blue Ridge Reservoir and camp at our usual favorite spot. Unfortunately, the water level was much lower than expected. We were only able to paddle about 2.5 miles in before the reservoir turned too shallow to continue. That kept us from reaching our intended campsite.

After paddling back out, we decided to spend the night at Rock Crossing Campground instead. While it was a little disappointing not to make it back to our spot, it was still a peaceful night under the pines. Hoping the winter brings enough snow and rain to refill the reservoir so it’s back to normal for future trips.

Planned on paddleing back to our favorite campsite. There was not enough water to get there, so we turned around and paddled back. It was very disappointing. I hope it fills up for next year.

Afternoon kayak on Blue Ridge (Cragin) reservoir following our morning hike. Water level is at 20% shrinking the lake dramatically. A little windy.
Lots of people considering it is Thursday and the boat ramp is closed due to low water.
Good times. :)

john, janie and i spent about an hour and a half kayaking in blue ridge/cc cragin reservoir
as @chumley warned me, the lake is only 20% full
we went from just west of the ramp to the dam, and it would be possible to go beyond the dam a ways
windy, getting crowded as we took out
well worth doing once at this level
i've been on this reservoir a couple times at much higher levels but it's been a few years
nice to take a dip in the lake after
fun afternoon

Two nights camping at Rock Crossing - just after the holiday weekend, so the campground was mostly empty.
After setting up camp, I rode my bike from my campsite over to the AZT crossing at FR751, then on the trail for a short distance in both directions. It's easier to hike than it is to ride, lol.
The next morning I set out for the lake, still not sure if I wanted to take the kayak out or not. Finally decided I was there, so I might as well. Glad I did - it was fun. Due to the very low water level (24% full) the boat launch is not open or useable for trailers, so the lake was pretty empty too - only saw a few paddleboarders when I started and a group of teen and young boys on kayaks and boards when I was finishing.
After some reading and relaxing in my hammock, I took a late afternoon stroll from the campground on the AZT connector and beyond.
Also did a little birding and geocaching.
Couple of nice days in a beautiful area!

Considered paddling. It was super windy. Water level is so low you'd think it hasn't snowed all winter or something. Made a quick trip down the 95 to the bridge and a visit to the Moqui tower. Nice to see some of these spots in their winter whites.

Decided to hit the water early in hopes to get some paddling in before storms fired. It was cloudy to begin with and eventually some non-electrical rain made an unusual mess of the morning. I was hoping the early shower would delay the onset of more severe weather, but that's not how it works up here apparently, and as we reached Rock Xing ABC, the forecast was updated to partly to mostly get off the water. We fell behind on that too and dodged a bolt or two as we got absolutely drenched. Good times. Beats the living flock out of the valley right now.

I met Chums at Blue Ridge for a morning paddle. The water was like glass as we headed east towards the dam area. Approaching the dam, we started getting some light sprinkles. There is quite a bit of flotsam in this area that has been washed downstream.

Heading farther past the dam, we put on our rain gear as the rain intensified and the wind picked up. We turned around and headed back towards the boat ramp. The rain stopped on the way back.

We paddled around a bit, waiting for Ryan and Echo to join us at the lake. When we connected with Ryan, we headed west past the ramp with the goal of reaching the area where the AZT crosses.

Mother Nature had other plans for us. Lightning was crackling, so we made the decision to hightail it back to the truck. The skies opened up, and we got drenched.

Although soaked, I still had a great time on what will always be Blue Ridge Reservoir.

This was the first time I've been to the Blue Ridge Reservoir, when it's been full, or nearly so. It make for a very short walk to the entry point.

A bit breezier today than the previous day at Woods Canyon. We headed west (into the wind) to make it easier on the way back. The last time I was here they were not letting motors on the water. Today we had 2 anglers with motors, pass us headed west.

We made it to the area just below Battleground Ridge and the Battle of Big Dry Wash marker before we turned around with the wind at our backs.

The original plan was to go past our entry point and head to the dam to check it out. None of us felt like fighting the wind on the way back from the dam, so we called it a day.

Hiked in on 18B and inflated our inflatables. Headed a couple miles downstream before returning and exploring upstream. Level might be down a foot from max, it's basically unnoticable, and nice to see it this level after a couple of really low years. SRP started pumping it into the East Verde about three weeks ago (because apparently the Verde system is depleted?) and will continue the regular draw down all summer. Starting from full pool is a good start though.

Apparently people believed the hype and headed for dryer desert locales because we only saw two others on the lake all day -- no campers anywhere along the shore, no motors, no anglers, etc. Odd scene for late May.

A friend of mine needed to escape the real world and some world-class batshit drama so I offered to introduce her to kayaking. We spent several hours of serenity on the lake with just enough of my inappropriate humor to make sure things didn't get too therapeutic.

Water level was up a bit from earlier in the summer. Still very low, but we were able to paddle up past the A-B Rock Crossing. We did have to hoof it up the boat ramp a couple of times, so I'm giving myself the AEG points even though apparently kayaking is a motorized sport here on the hazsite.

Snacks were enjoyed, and the consensus decision was that kay will be yakked again.

Maiden voyage of the Kayaks. My son Ben joined me for a pleasant day on the water. First time in a kayak in many years. My upper body will pay the price tomorrow. Because the Reservoir is at only 28%, there is a trailer ban. So no boats w/motors. This made for less activity and clear paddling.

We went east and south and followed the reservoir until we ran out of water just shy of Houston Draw. The paddling was a bit tougher on the return with the breeze in our face for quite a bit.

Looking forward to hitting up more of the rim lakes

Return to Blue Ridge with a modified group (John and Tim replacing Gary). Knowing the COVID crowds would be an issue, we managed to get on the water Thursday night. It was pretty special paddling in the dark under a nearly-full moon. We arrived at our intended spot to find it vacant, but with a muddier ingress than last year due to a lower water level. It was a frustrating/comical time getting our gear out of the mess at 10pm. The next morning, John and I put our civil engineering hats on and built a fine specimen of a dock, making the mud a non-issue thereafter. Really, we didn't have a choice: Preston had become a tyrannical pirate for the weekend and forced us to do so or risk walking the plank (seriously, you can see his ship in the photoset).

Glad we made the effort to go in Thursday. By 10am multiple groups passed us looking for a sizable campsite. To put this in context, last year we saw only a handful of paddlers - and no campers - come by our site the entire weekend. I would say it was at least twice as busy on the lake.

Tim left us Friday evening to get to work. All camp chores done, we settled-in to chill mode. Most of Saturday was spent floating and swimming lazily to stay cool. Most of Saturday evening was spent churning our booze inventory.

As usual, the day we had to leave was the most peaceful. I spent a few minutes beneath an aspen soaking it in before returning to the Phoenix furnace. All is good though. At least we beat the crowds and got some cooler respite.

Not a lot of mileage on this trip, but that's what happens when you go out with friends and family. We were on the water about 3 hours. Lots of stopping for snacks, and stopping to climb around and jump off rocks. Plenty of fun distractions. Plus, we were all hungry for some pizza at Old Country Inn in Pine.

Smokey from the Hart fire made for unique float. Parking lot was full since 6PM Friday. We pull our kayaks out of the water at 10AM Saturday and the dock was a mess of people. Get there early or better yet go on weekdays.

Fun weekend but not too much hiking. The CCCragin reservoir was great and I've never kayaked on it before..only hiked in the area. The lake was basically full from the winter snow so conditions exploring the reservoir were very nice. Chumley was looking for a volunteer to get one of the kayaks to our camp spot so I joined in on a short hike and enjoyable kayak back to camp. We had a combination of kayaks, floaties and pack raft to chose from for floatation so there was no shortage of water opportunities.

Spent the weekend backpacking and kayaking at CCCragin. The lake is down 12-18" from the high it reached a few weeks ago, and the spillway is no longer flowing, but it's basically still 100% full. There's quite a bit of debris in parts of the lake, usually collected into specific areas by surface winds. But it's certainly not a place you can run a motor without being attentive.

In addition to the various hiking adventures, I managed to tally exactly 9.99 miles in the kayak too. This is always a fun destination!

A great mid-day paddle on Blue Ridge North arm to the end. Easy choice as a large group that took 2.5 hours to prep (per ranger) launched just ahead of us and headed out to the South arm. Got off the water at 2:30 and packed for home just before the 3 o'clock light showers began. Our first time on Blue Ridge and will be back to explore more.

Jon invited me to a campout he was hosting for some out of town brewer types from New York, so I decided to bring my kayak and explore the lake.

It was at 82% full which is still a nice level for both kayaking and swimming.

The area within a mile or so of the boat ramp is a little bit crowded, but just like most trailheads once you get a short distance away from the start you leave the tourists behind and the real spendor of this lake presents itself in scenery and solitude. It's always a pleasure to kayak up here!

Rock Crossing is a trail that preceded the construction of Blue Ridge Reservoir in 1965 (now CC Cragin Reservoir). The trail construction is absolutely phenomenal. National Parks don't build trails as nicely as this trail was built!

Due to the reservoir filling the canyons which the trail previously crossed, the FS has officially divided the trail into three segments. Hiking the entire length would require swimming or using a flotation device to cross the lake between segments. At full pool, the distance between A and B at Rock Crossing is about 300 feet. The distance between B and C near the mouth of Bear Canyon is only 100 feet. Both crossings can be shorter at lower lake levels and the B-C crossing is often completely dry.

I hiked Segment B out and back, followed by segment A from the out and back, and finally segment C out and back. The photos are in that order, which may be a bit confusing. The photos are geotagged so you can see their location on the map. The descriptions below are all described one way from north to south, which is also how the official gps tracks are set up.

Segment A
Starts at an unmarked pull-out along FR751, which is the main road leading to CC Cragin Reservoir. There's one long switchback and the trail ends at the lake on the east side of a small cove. Depending on the lake level, a little bit of room to picnic, dive, and swim is available. The west side of the cove features a nice campsite that is frequently occupied.

Segment B
Starts on the south side of Rock Crossing on a large flat area that features a couple of frequently used lakeside campsites. The track begins right next to a nice overhanging rock "cave" that has been made into a rain shelter for campers. The trail climbs gently to the top of Battleground Ridge and the intersection with the end of FR123 and a large pumping station which takes water from the reservoir and moves it to the East Verde river near Payson.

The trail follows the road south for about 1/4 mile before a sign indicates the start of the route heading south to General Springs Canyon. It's another 1/4 mile along the old alignment of FR9709Q before the singletrack starts on the left and begins the scenic descent to the lake.

Segment C
This segment starts with a beautiful switchback that leads to a nice campsite above the junction of Bear Canyon and General Springs Canyon before following a steady traverse along the slope above Bear Canyon through a lightly burned fire scar. After a few minutes you reach an old double-track which leads the final stretch to the end of FR139A on Telephone Ridge. It's easiest to follow the double-track, but at the end it climbs more steeply than a nice hiking trail, because the original cut actually takes a more moderate route along a gentle grassy slope on the east side of the ridge. The cut here is indistinguishable except for some faint old blazes cut in the mature ponderosas.

History
From the Segment C trailhead at end of FR139A, it's a short 1.5 miles to the Fred Haught Trail and the old Pinchot Guard Station cabin. I haven't been able to confirm this, but I believe the Rock Crossing Trail was originally connected to the Cabin Loop system and was part of a main trail leading from Washington Park to Blue Ridge. It can still easily be hiked that way now if you don't mind the two swims. You could even make a loop with the AZT which now largely parallels this old route, avoiding the two lake crossings.

This one is a rarely used gem!
