A trip up the bumpy, weather-beaten old road to visit an old favorite and savor a little time out of the heat of the desert floor. Not that it was much cooler up at 7200 feet with a low temp of 61 degrees (69 at home in Tucson that morning). :lol: Not many people camping, but the road was fairly busy Sunday on my way up (which is usual). Much better in places like this after the summer rains have arrived.

After an extended period of heavy monsoonal storms during July and early August, we finally got a break in the action, so figured I would spend a night camping at an old favorite place. I wasn't disappointed of course, as you can pretty much be assured of a fine display of summer wildflowers. :D Not many people in the campground made for a nice quiet night.

i posted a picture on social media on friday with the #fullcampground tag so no one would even think about it, and it worked (because you know that absolutely everyone follows me on insta). we had a couple of neighbors that stayed one night, but the campground was fairly empty. we drove right up and got our favorite spot on friday afternoon. the road was pretty good, only one sketchy part but many CUVs made it. there was more ATV noise than ever though during the days. and only a couple of birders! i did try my legs around the interpretive loop and next time i'm here i think i'll go up the sawmill trail and see what damage i can do (to the peak, not my foot). if i make it to the junction (just past the wilderness line), i'll call it a success.

I headed down to one of my favorite places in this part of Arizona with the intention of camping. However, when I got there I changed my mind, as it was pretty warm and I just wasn't feeling like setting up the gear. So, I got out the chair and sat around for about an hour in the shade of the trees, while enjoying my Wendy's meal and chili that I picked up in Sierra Vista on my way. This visit just reaffirmed my prior conviction that it is better to enjoy these sky islands after the summer rains have commenced to bring things to life and taken the heat stress away.

There was one tent set up at Ramsey Vista CG and nobody at Reef, except for the birders who are a common sight this time of year. Everything else seemed about the same as last time I was here.

The cicadas were really cranking out their "electric serenade" for me to enjoy all the way up to 7200 feet! :D

Left the house at 5am and spent the next 13 hours driving all over Southeast AZ, chasing birds and exploring new areas - fun!
Drove up Carr Canyon road to sample the Huachuca's and look for a couple birds at Reef Townsite ... nice break from the heat up there, fairly rough road to reach it.
Mainly posting this and photoset to try to see if any fungi aficionado's can identify the big weird fungus I found ...

Short loop from the end of the Reef Townsite Campground to the old mine site. Surprised me with how far it dropped, and there's quite a steep hill to climb after reaching the old mine site. Exploring a bit off trail will net some more interesting historical finds. Nice history here.
