Our original plan was to hike the 5 mile jeep road up and down to the peak. Upon driving to the trailhead, Brian and I were stopped by Tribal security and we told we needed to request permission from the district office which was about 10 miles down the road. We then drove to the district office and they gave us a 2 phone numbers of local tribe leaders who were in charge of the access to that trail. We didn't have cell service out there and couldn't call so we decided to simply hike 5 miles up and down the paved road to make the hike about equal to what we would have hiked on the trail. In the end, our roundtrip hike was measured at 10.37 miles. We made great time on the road and made it to the top by about lunchtime. The observatory was closed at this time but we were still able to take some photos of the telescopes, buildings and other equipment. We had our lunch at a picnic table at the main parking lot for Kitt Peak observatory and were not allowed to proceed any further so we have to head down from this point. Along the hike were great views of Baboquiveri peak, what we believed was Coyote peak and mountains in the far distance.

Later when I had better cell service, after hiking, I called the tribal member (Michael) and he said he would be glad to give us permission on a future date. He said the main reason they ask people to register is so they know they are not border crossers, and also for safety. He said there have been accidents/injuries in the past. He told us that several years ago a hunter was bit by a rattlesnake in some of the remote areas and didn't survive. He also mentioned that there were 2 known mountain lions out there, but knowing they are all over the Catalinas we didn't think there was any real danger, especially in the daytime, and knowing that we should always be aware of our surroundings.

Kitt Peak has been on my radar screen for some time now, and I have been unable to hike it the last two years due to a COVID-19 closure. The Visitors Center is still closed, and the observatory is still closed to the public. However, the Highway 386 is now open on a limited basis, so I figured that today was a good day to finally get this peak bagged and tagged.

With the high gas prices, we decided not to drive all the way to the top; instead, we hiked up the old jeep road. Actually high gas prices had nothing to do with our decision -- I went down there to hike, not to drive to the top of a mountain.

It turned out to be an enjoyable hike, and it kind of reminded me of hiking up to Mount Ord, except that Ord does not have an observatory on top of it!

It was a straight forward hike that was a good workout. There were some nice views along the way and at the summit. We did not see anyone else on the hike and the weather was good, so what is not to like?

Finally got down there to hike this one. Late start, but no matter since it's December. This one is really straight forward and a nice workout. Nice views on the way back down of Coyote Mountain. I didn't see much, and definitely not anyone on the trail.

With some small but definite improvements in my equilibrium over the past week, I decided to give Kitt Peak a go and hope for the best… [cuz after a one-way drive of nearly 2 hours followed by a one-way ascent of 5-6 miles, failing to make the official summit was NOT going to be an option]. While over 95% of the hike is on a dirt road with excellent footing, my one concern was the final ascent to the official summit, which is noted as being a “short scramble” in the HAZ hike description, [but from the looks of satellite imagery appeared to be more of a full out, hand-over-foot type of boulder hop]. When all is well, boulder hopping is normally a top strength, but since the acute onset of the equilibrium issues, it’s been a number one weakness. In fact, just one week earlier, I thought for a split second that I was going to crack my head open while attempting to get past just two boulders behind the Kendrick Lookout Tower en route to the helipad…

…fortunately, [despite satellite imagery being right on the money], this week was a lot less eventful. I parked right at the start of the dirt road, about a mile further down from the “official” HAZ start. My Forester could’ve easily gotten me to the closer start, but my objective for the day was 12-15 miles, and the gradual up-slope of the first mile looked all too enticing.

Out for a little blood [after having failed miserably to give my legs/lungs even a slight burn on my previous two summit hikes], I busted out a first mile of just under 15 minutes, [which included a brief stop to throw some crap in my hiking pack]. After that, the grade increases considerably; and, [not wanting things to feel too much like a race], I decided that I’d be content with averaging just under 20 min mile pace, including stops. I split 6 miles in 1 hr 56 min 34 sec – exactly at the point on the summit where you’d either continue around the final turn along the paved road to the right, toward the 4m telescope building OR head left to bag the official highpoint of Kitt.

The funny thing was, [not thinking I’d need to spot check the GPS on a dirt road hike], I’d been focusing on the telescope building and not paying attention to exactly where the official summit was located… so, [after barreling around the final turn to the right toward the telescope building], I proceeded to “boulder” up what I thought was the summit. Given that my climbing/bouldering ability is still extremely impaired, I didn’t think I was going to make it and really lucked out with some tree branches nestled in between the boulders to grab on to. Even taking an extra 2-3 minutes when I would’ve taken just seconds under normal circumstances, I was still going to make it in under 2 hours… only to find that once on top, the effort was for naught… the paved road I had just barreled up /around separated me from the true summit. Amazing how I had overlooked this.

Before heading over to bag the official summit, I went inside the telescope building, which was really neat. Luckily Route Scout managed to stay sane, but MayMyHike went totally bananas during mile #7, which was the mile I was inside the building. Regardless of GPS app, I subtracted a few hundred feet of AEG… cuz that is literally one h#ll of an elevator ride to the top of that telescope building!

Next up was the official summit. There were a few very well defined routes leading toward it, but as I got closer, all appeared to involve some amount of hand-over-foot type bouldering. What would’ve been a graceful hop, skip, and jump to the top under normal circumstances probably looked liked I was competing for world’s most klutzy / unathletic ascent… but ‘succeeding despite feeling challenged’ [how I felt during the final scramble up Kitt] is certainly a step up from ‘succeeding despite severely compromising safety’ [how I felt 90+% of the time during my Elden & Kendrick hikes the previous weekend].

Walked around the peak on a Friday afternoon prior to an evening stargazing session. Stumbled around looking for the end of trail at the top but couldn't find it - triplog will give a bit of context to the photoset soon to come.

This was an excellent trip for a very amateur stargazer - overall their evening sessions are about 4 hours long. Includes an introductory educational session, sunset watching, telescope stargazing and binoculor stargazing. Plus, you're up at 7,000'+ with no light pollution for miles. Tough to beat and I highly recommend it. I was guided through the M52 nebula, four of Jupiter's moons (plus a very detailed view of Jupiter), the 7 sisters, and very close ups of moon craters with last week's 3/4 moon. Even with the moon light there was still clear visibility for me. Needless to say I'll be buying some binos this summer.

Even if you're not heading up for the evening, the drive up provides some serious elevation culminating in a very prominent peak that offers views to Lemmon, Mexico, and far far to the east. This would be one helluvah climb!

My belief is that JJ3 has a more realistic AEG, and since I did some strolling and touring, I am hoping I am accurate. Great hike, very scenic, fantastic March Weather in nearly mid-May, and fun hike. Worthy of doing again.

I have been wanting to do this one since JohnLP and I passed by it a month ago on our way back from Mt. Ajo. Just the sheer number of telescopes up top is fascinating to me.

It was a bit brisk on the way up however once the blood got flowing it felt nice. Up top was even more impressive than I had imagined. The views were great!

I would like to come back sometime when I can actually go in the large observatory. Today it was closed. On the way back down I stopped and checked out an old storage shed. Pretty cool.

this was not the plan. the plan was to get up early and drive out to the west side of baboquivari peak and hike up that. little did we know that the road to babo was closed due to the sells rodeo parade, not to be reopened until noon. hmm... what to do. open up haz mobile and find another option, of course! kitt peak sounded like a reasonable alternative, although i really HATE jeep roads, and this was a jeep road. however, it is a jeep road like no other. it's nice and even. mr. badbern and his tumamoc hill would like this - it was just like tumamoc in the nice even grade. it was just a little longer. actually, when we were an hour in, it looked like we were closer to the goal than when we were two hours in. but eventually, we made it up to the goal. we saw all of the monumentation up there, i had a bevvy, then we went to visit the telescope and make our way back down. it wasn't babo, but it was an enjoyable plan b. and the views of the coyote mountains totally had me hooked.

cindyl
Our plans to hike from Baboquivari Camp this morning were stymied by the Sells Rodeo Parade, but fortunately cindyl had enough cell data to dial up HAZ and pick out this as a plan B for the morning. Even though it entailed an extra 40 miles of driving, she had paid for the gas so I couldn't complain and I didn't have anything to come up with since I'd never been in this area previously.

We parked at the borrow pit, prepped and started up from there. The road is marked as being for emergency use only, but we did see signs of recent usage and maintenance. In a couple of spots, rockfall boulders had been dragged from the middle of the road off to the side. The decomposed granite surface of this road made it easy to walk on, and it wasn't rutted up too badly by water running except in a handful of spots.

We enjoyed the views as we climbed, and once the road crossed the east-west ridgeline we could see our goal but still had quite a bit of switchbacking to do to get there. The road held a pretty steady grade all the way up, with just a spot or two where it descended a bit, a few flat spots and a few steep spots. As we neared the top, we saw a few patches of snow in the shade and I started to wish I was wearing more than a single layer, but once we got to the top and were in the sun it was fine.

We reached the paved road and followed the paved walkway and access road up to the large telescope and then veered off to make our way up to the summit. We rested and had refreshments there before seeing the sights and views from the telescope building. We headed back down the way we came up, worrying just a little about the possibility that we were trespassing. We knew that tribal law enforcement was focused on the rodeo in Sells so they weren't going to be out looking for us.

Hiked on top, from the visitor center to the 4-meter telescope and back. Amazing views from the lookout area atop that telescope over the area in all directions!!

When I was talking with one of the staff, they told me they had a storm in spring 2010 that had 70mph sustained winds and gusts of up to 170mph on top of Kitt. It was so bad it tore the sides off of some of the telescopes!

Still don't know if you can hike the jeep trail up to the top "legally" so I haven't done it yet...
