Cathy and I had met a fellow named Craig from the Desert Foothills Land Trust last month while hiking the Go John Trail in the CCRP. He offered us a chance to hike Lone Mountain with him and a Field Botanist named Steve Jones. We agreed mainly just so we could bag a peak that @DixieFlyer hadn't gotten around to yet. As per Wades methodology it has an elevation of 2696' and a prominence of 400'. A real brute. We didn't get to all the trails we had planned on as Cathy fainted twice up near the summit so we came back down the way we went up as it was the shortest route back to the car.
The weather was perfect today and we learned a lot from the botanist. One thing I found interesting is that Owl Clover is a parasitic plant in that it uses the root systems of other plants to get it's water and nutrients.
There is a current discussion on the forum as to when the rattlesnakes come out. I would say April 6th is a good answer as we saw 3 today. One was docile and the other was very upset with us. The third was seen warming up off the shoulder of Cave Creek Road on the ride home.
This hike is a one and done in our book but I'm glad I was able to finally hike it and post a triplog as @chumley 's was the only one up and it looked lonely. :-) |

| no partners | | This is one of those that I've eyed dozens of times. On my way up Pima on Saturday I decided to detour and check it out. Amazingly well-constructed and maintained trails here. Not a huge hill, but it's a Lone mountain ... it's isolation makes the views around it quite scenic. I was surprised to find that there's a perfectly legal public access point. Too bad that's not the one I started at. Next time... |
