Sidewinder canyon slots 4 and 5 on the right side when heading into the canyon were absolute gems. So happy to have hiked here! The 4th slot was quite long and an easy width to navigate with lots of twists and turns. There are some obstacles, but none too hard to get up or past. It helps that the wall material is fanglomate which is filled with a multitude smaller rocks. This results in a plethora of hand and footholds when climbing up and over dry falls and obstacles. It reminds me of the beginner wall at the rock gym which is absolutely filled floor to ceiling with an insane amount of holds, all crowded in. 🤣

The fourth slot was our favorite due to all the fun twists and turns over its entire length. The Fifth slot is a close second. Also fun and full of twists and turns, this slot has some pretty arches and an abandoned tiny loop which is also neat. The Fifth slot is shorter and ends in a massive boulder fall that you can tell some people go up, but I think most people turn around here. The rock face material is crumbly which results in hand/foot holds that disintegrate when you put weight on them (!). Also likely a turn around point due to the height and exposure of the dry fall obstacle. It is a pretty end, though. Very grand and pretty in the sun as the area widens up in this section.

After the fifth slot, we continued up Sidewinder canyon to see the narrows of the main canyon. We didn't get to the absolute end of the canyon which also ends in a dry all, as my kids were ready to turn around. 🤣

Sidewinder canyon starts off very wide at its mouth and slowly gets narrower as you gain elevation going up Canyon. It remains relatively wide until after the fifth slot on the right side. Apparently there is another first slot on the left side before the first slot on the right side (going into the canyon), but we missed that and didn't find out about it until later.

The Sidewinder canyon floor is mini gravel, and gaiters would have been great to keep tiny rocks out of shoes, but mine were forgotten at home (Oops). Instead, I dumped my shoes a couple times. The gravel makes for slower going up Canyon while gaining elevation.

I took a quick peek and foray into the other slots on our way back down Canyon, but was not able to do any real exploring as my kids were done. 🤣

We very much enjoyed this hike due to slots 4 and 5. We didn't see too many people. 4 groups of 2 to 4 people over all. One dad and 2 young kids that we met when we were in the middle of slot 4 going up and they were coming down mentioned that they hiked across the top and dropped into the fourth slot so that they only were coming one way down the slot. That is an fun option, I think.

The weather was great for us, starting off cloudy and clearing up later.

The turn off from Badwater road to the Sidewinder canyon parking area is just after mile marker 30 on the left when coming from Furnace Creek, before reaching Mormon Point. Sidewinder Canyon parking is also the parking area for the Willow Creek/Canyon hike. The entry to Sidewinder is to the south of the parking area.

up around 0600 as it was just getting light
coffee and breakfast, of course
nice seeing the sun gradually light up the mountains from our valley campsite
we got going around 0800 with a stop at ashford mill ruins
our first hike was sidewinder canyon
we went all the way to where the canyon opened up about 2.5 miles in
then explored several side slot canyons on the return
the hike description has three, but we counted at least five
we went up five, four and two and the return - three was very short and not as interesting
all of the slots featured narrow passages and scrambling - fun :)
two had more climbing with a top out overlooking the basin
we didn't get to the first one
our recommendation would be to hit that one, then the last two and return from there
estimating our mileage at six since my track bounced around
had lunch in the parking lot
next stop was badwater trail with 1000 of our closest friends
the lowest point in the usa is right at the trailhead
a flat walk out on the salt flats with views of the mountains to the east and west
this was a fun stroll even with all the people
we did get past the crowds for a few photos
finished the day with the natural bridge trail
another gravel uphill to an arch
we went past the arch to a dryfall
that section was more scenic and less crowded
camped this time off trail canyon road
rougher road, rocky terrain, weird shenanigans from the neighbors all night
a bit warmer and good star gazing

Day 2 of a planned 7 days.

Split Cinder Cones
.56 Miles
298 AEG

After a cool morning I hiked over to a nearby feature called Split Cinder Cones to warm up.
It fit the bill before packing up.

Ashford Mill Ruins.
We checked out the ruins for a bit before heading our.

Sidewinder Canyon
6.71 Miles
2015 AEG

We hiked to the end of the canyon before hitting the side canyons on the way back.
There are 5 total side canyons that veer off to the South. 5, 4 and 2 are worthy side trips with extraordinarily tight, scenic, fun slots. 3 was a bust, do not waste your time. 1 we did not go into but heard it is also worth the price of admission. Slot 2 has the extra added feature of taking you out of the slot and to the top to get an overview of the canyon. 4 of these 5 slots are a don't miss when you are in Death Valley. Try to do it early before the crowds arive.

Badwater Basin.
2.25 miles
363 AEG.

This on is quite interesting seeing the bright white salt flat contrasting with the dark mountains snowcapped also in white. You can make this one as long or short as you want. IMHO this one is fun to hit mid-day WHEN the crowds are there. A fun one to people watch on. Probably the most popular one in the park. We're guestimating we saw a thousand people on this one. This one is also recommended.

Natural Bridge Trail
1.57 Miles
452 AEG

Another good one to hit when in the area. The Natural Bridge is in about .4 mile. We went in farther to explore the canyon.

After this we went out to Trail Road to look for a dispersed camping spot and spend an interesting evening with the neighbors.

Day two of our DV tour. Lots of diversity in our hikes this day. Plenty of people at Badwater & Natural Bridge as expected on a three day weekend, not so much in Sidewinder.
Sidewinder has lots of side canyons to be explored besides the main canyon. Some very slotty. Very cool.
Long fun day. :)

This hike was part of a larger trip to Death Valley. In the family, most of us get off work between Christmas and New Year's, so this year, we decided to take a trip to Death Valley, figuring that the weather is better in the winter than in the summer. The itinerary was as follows:
  • Day 1: Drive from Phoenix, up the road to the north end of the park, camp just north of Teakettle Junction
  • Day 2: Visit Racetrack Playa and see the famous "sailing stones." These are incredible! If you ever visit death valley, you need to visit here! Drive back down the road with a stop at the Mesquite Flat sand dunes for sunset. Camp off Echo Canyon road 2.5 miles in (the campgrounds were closed for COVID, so camping was only permitted off 4WD roads).
  • Day 3: Sidewinder Canyon hike (don't worry, I'll get to the hike soon), Badwater Basin salt flats, Devil's Golf Course, and Artist's Palette.
  • Day 4: Sunrise at Zabriski Point, 20 mule canyon, Harmony Borax Works, the Wonder gold mine, Salt creek, and a good hike at the dunes, including going to the highest sand dune, sunset at Dante's view.
  • Day 5: The highlight was seeing our campsite off Echo canyon road for the first time in daylight! The drive home was easy enough and quite scenic, with a brief stop at Lake Mead overlook.

The hike in Sidewinder Canyon leaves the parking area and heads to the south up a short narrow trail that winds in wavy switchbacks, much like a sidewinder path. After a short hike up the canyon, we got to a large cairn on the right side of the drainage. Knowing this was not Slot #1 listed on the NPS website, but figuring that it was worth exploring, we started up it. While not one of the three official slot canyons on the NPS website, it was actually quite enjoyable to hike in till it dead-ended about 0.1 miles in. For the small amount of effort, it's a worthwhile canyon to explore. The first of the official canyons is just a short distance further up the main Sidewinder canyon. For some strange reason, a large arrow made out of rocks points tourists further up Sidewinder canyon, rather than into Slot #1. This arrow is best ignored, as Slot #1 is one of the most interesting ones! The slot canyon, while short in length, is so dark that at one point, headlamps almost become necessary for travel. The NPS trail description says they are required, so of course, that was an invitation to try to complete it without headlamps, which we were successful at doing! Slot #2 is much longer, at around 0.8 miles, although you could hike as far as you want, right up to the top of a mountain. We stopped when the slot canyon became no longer a slot, but more like a wide open drainage. Towards the upper end of the Slot #2, starting at the 0.4 mile mark, there were some "obstacles" involving climbing 8-10 feet to get to the next ledge or level of the canyon. The obstacles were few and far between, maybe 5 more challenging obstacles total. Slot #3 was perhaps the most adventurous, as it required climbing under large boulders and squeezing between small spaces, as well as climbing over large boulders. Similar to Slot #2, there is no official end, we went probably about 0.3 miles. All in all, this was a fantastic hike and a must-see if you visit Death Valley?

Are there more canyons to explore beyond Slot #3? Who knows? We didn't have time to check it out, but we sure will next time we're in the area!
