For our first hike at the start of a few days in the Pine area we took on something I'd thought about for some time. We'd hiked on the Bearfoot Trail 6 years ago and last year we'd hiked on Forest Road 608 including a side trip to the Wise Trailhead so I figured why not make a loop of it and add the Wise Trail to our inventory of hikes.

Sounds like a good plan, huh? But not so fast. While the hike along the Bearfoot Trail was ok, I never remember so many switchbacks along the trail, enough that even Tracey commented on the seeming overkill.

Whatever, when we reached the waypoint for the start of the Wise Trail it wasn't obvious where the trail actually began. It seemed to me 6 years ago there was a small sign, but then that may have been wishful thinking. Anyway, taking the just go and eventually the trail will appear attitude, within 50-60 feet we hit on what showed signs of some traffic and headed onward and upward.

Did I say upward? Upward it shall be until we decide either to have-at-it! or no more! and call it quits.
After the hike I would check out the Wise Trail @The_Eagle triplogs which I should have read to be better prepared for the event... maybe I should have 'trained' for it??

Back to the hike, it wasn't long before it was no longer the Wise, but the UnWise Trail. With all the thrashing through manzanita, holly, and whatever other vegetation that saw fit to hold us back while at the same time as continuing to follow the route which appeared to be the most traveled. After while it became slightly easier to pick out the route far enough to avoid the worst of the vegetation.

Overall it was a tough enough climb that even with my trekking poles to aid in balance, traction and fending off obtrusive brush, my HR stayed in the aerobic zone but for some dabbling into the maximum zone. So when we reached an opening on Mount Meg (I never knew it had a name) we stopped for a short breather and a snack for Tracey.

While she was munching down I attempted to locate the next part of the trail. With half-a-dozen different possibilities, all showing travel of some kind, whether by human, deer, elk, skunk or squirrel, nothing stood out. So I just bulled my way in the general direction until I broke through and got the bad news... heck, we weren't even halfway up. Taking in what appeared to be a steep drop for 100'+ before heading up the seemingly steeper slope than it was up to Meg, with my left hip already burning I made the executive decision, no way, we're heading back down. Ok, so now that Tracey had bulled through far enough to see for herself, she was in agreement.

Of course I would lengthen my trekking poles for assistance during the Meg descent, but the main issue turned out to be the route... what we had gotten used to watching for to stay on-track (a few metal tags, some red, some bare metal) no longer seemed to work. Now either every direction seemed to be the route or none were... all at the same time. So between doubling-back and/or and making our own route it seemed like it was taking forever. But in reality, after the 45 minute ascent it took us less than 30 minutes to get back down... thanks to my faithful trekking poles. Are you catching the theme here?

Whew! Now that that Unwise decision has been nullified, the hike back along Bearfoot back to Strawberry was a veritable breeze.

Will we ever attempt Wise again? It's doubtful... Tracey likes trails to be actual trails.

Decided to give this rim climb trail a try, I enjoyed it, Ryan not so much.

Parked at the Strawberry TH and hiked the Bearfoot Trail to the start of the Wise Trail. Lower Wise was steep but relatively easy to follow. The middle of Wise is less steep but more overgrown and challenging to stay on route. This is the section Ryan grew tried of very quickly. The steepness returned on the upper section of Wise but the route finding was easier. At the top there was a nice rocky section were easy scrambling was required. Once on the rim we took a short break then did some wandering before we headed back down via FR 608, aka Rock Wall Trail.

Nice hike that I’d do again but I might need to bribe my hiking partner into joining me.

Exploratory hike.

First time hiking up to Pine Point. This is a use trail that's a steep one. Not to bad to follow. I got off track once towards the top. Once up top I connected some forest roads together with some off trail.

I made it out to the top of Temple Canyon and then made my way back. I exited the top using the Wise Trail. This one's getting overgrown and I got off track a few times.

Weather was decent, but humid.

I had a short time window and had been wanting to search an additional route to the Rim.

I'd been to the top via the old Boy Scout tagged Wise Trail. There are still sporadic red aluminum tags the majority of the route. There are just a few areas when you need to negotiate the manzanita. There was just a bit of snow hanging on from the 12" received the previous weekend.

I made my way to the south to check out the ridge I wanted to try going down. A few cairns at the top gave me the feel that there was a route to get to the Bearfoot Trail. It was steep and loose in spots, but it all worked out.

I've been looking at this possible loop for awhile now. This uses the 2004 Boy Scout, Wise "Trail" to gain the Rim. On a previous try, I made it to the top of Mount Meg, with no obvious way to the ridge line. This time I made my own way.

Once on the ridge line, I started seeing the tags the Boy Scouts had marked the trail with back in the day. The route up favors the right side of ridge most of the way up. It was nice to make the top and see the TH sign.

Next was to find my way down from Pine Point. On previous trips here I'd seen cairns, so I followed them down.
There was actually a fairly good use trail here, so no problem getting down.

Absolutely perfect hiking weather.

Getting to the rim using this route has intrigued me . I first saw this Boy Scout trail on a Camp LoMia Trail map circa 2004.
I've had a best guess traced route drawn up for quite some time. Today was the day.

Where the Wise Trail crosses the Bearfoot trail appears to have been purposefully obscured. Once you get 30' or so off of the bearfoot trail, it becomes fairly obvious, all the way to Mount Meg (Name given on Camp Lo Mia Map. AKA 6536) This is a pretty steep climb gaining more than 600' in less than .6 of a mile.

When I reached the top of Mount Meg, I searched for the route for the next leg, to get me to the rim. I know it goes there, because on a previous hike, I found the upper trailhead sign as well as one of the Boy Scouts red tags.
After looking around atop Meg with no luck and being solo on this hike, I thought I'd save the remaining 500' of gain for another day. In retrospect, I see where I need to look next.

I retreated down the Mount and went over to record where the lower TH begins at the Camp Lo Mia property.

The rest of the hike I just checked out a couple of side canyons off the Bearfoot Trail I'd been meaning to look at.
