I played in a charity volleyball tournament in Scottsdale in the morning and threw some extra water and my boots in the truck because Camelback wasn't far away, and I wasn't going to waste an opportunity to hike when I was right next door. The tournament was done by early afternoon, so I headed over to Invergordon. I try hard to avoid Camelback unless friends/family are visiting and talk me into it, but I assumed that with the temperature hovering ~100° in the middle of the afternoon, crowds wouldn't be a problem, and wide-open parking confirmed that.

It had been ~6 years since I'd hiked Camelback, and the city has further idiot-proofed the trail, especially on the Cholla side. I didn't take more than a few steps on the way up where there wasn't a sign, a reflector, and/or a paint mark highlighting the route. If the trend continues, my next visit in a few years will include a City of Phoenix employee holding my hand and guiding me up the mountain Sherpa-style.

As expected, there weren't many people out. Took a quick drink break at the top, then down the Echo side, and back and up and over to Invergordon. Not a bad city hike, especially when it's not packed with people. I felt pretty good despite a morning of volleyball and eating half a pizza, and I suppose it's not a bad idea to start getting used to the heat again...definitely starting to feel like summer, even if the oven was only turned up to medium today.

I had a nice winter day off so decided to do Camelback. Didn't realize it had been over 5 years since I last was here. Got there about 9am. Lot about 60% full. Trail was in good shape. Saw the fella carrying the Christmas tree up.

Early morning hike at Camelback. Got started around 6am. Not as early as I would have liked, but still had the mountain shade all the way up. I haven’t been focusing on elevation with my hiking and this trail will make you realize that. I always try to hike straight through and I had to pause to catch my breath near the top. :( Took 46 minutes to reach the top. Chilled for maybe a minute before heading back down. Trails seemed very busy. Counted close to 250 hikers! :o Some notables: I saw a guy hiking up without any shoes :-k . I had one guy pass me, skipping down the boulders. I was nearing the end when he passed me going back up :app: (I’m not sure if he’s the “Augustine” that Joe referred to a few years ago, but my hat goes off to him). And speaking of impressed, I saw a 1 legged hiker making fantastic time with crutches. :app: :app: I’m hard pressed to do this trail with four working extremities.

I went with the stats provided on the description page, but my Garmin had me at 3.15 miles and 1434 feet. I assume the discrepancies is the “Creepage” of the Garmin. It’s sad that my speed can impact my Garmin that dramatically. (I used my Oregon 750. It can’t communicate with my computer, but it can keep stats - kind of. I didn’t want to carry the Montana, because it is such a “brick”).

In town at the Lost Dutchman and I hiked this mid day. Felt the same as it did several years back, but very hot. Mostly the tourist crowd out with me, mid day. Locals left by 11. I was typically an afternoon crowd hiker.

Great Easter hike in the rain left this highly visited trail unusually unattended and enjoyable. There were a few waterfalls dripping and the trail was running with muddy water that looked like running milk chocolate. Yum!

We started later than we would have liked because there is now a gate to the Cholla trail. Somehow the gate opened, and we started. A short ways up, was a Phoenix P&R employee in a truck trying to make us all feel guilty for being in the park off hours. It seems the graceful thing for him to do would be to open the gate instead of playing a self-righteous sheriff of the Camelback Mt fiefdom.

It was strange only needing a headlamp for the very start of the climb up Camelback and for it to be light at the summit. After a short break, we headed down to Echo Canyon TH where we took another short break before continuing through Paradise Valley and over to Piestewa Peak, to the top area where we took a longer break, got water and ate. From there we headed towards Piestewa Peak.

I don't know what was going on with me up Piestewa. I had no strength and was having a terrible go of it. About 2/3 of the way up, at an area with the last bench, I pulled off and sat down for several minutes. I decided to not summit and headed back down to Dreamy Draw. I went pretty slow all the way and got to rest for a while waiting for the others to catch up.

After the rest, I decided to continue with them to North Mountain and decide what to do then. I felt fine on that stretch and was able to complete that section without trouble. Lunch was waiting for us at North Mountain, so there was good food and more rest. I decided to try to complete the rest of the hike. I kept things steady up North Mountain and didn't get too far behind. I was fine from there to the start of the climb up Shaw Butte. Again, I kept things steady and wasn't too far behind to the summit, where we all regrouped before heading down to the North Mountain Visitor Center.

After another rest there, we headed off to Lookout Mountain. It was getting dark on the climb up Lookout and we needed to pull our headlamps out when we reached the steep stuff. We made it to the summit and were happy there was no more climbing, just the descent to the trailhead where Tequila and beer was waiting.

There're two gaps on my route. The first is from where I stopped on Piestewa Peak to close to Dreamy Draw. The second is from the Lookout Mountain summit to the parking lot.

Did an over and back on Camelback, starting from the Cholla side. I have not done this hike in years (generally lacking a desire to be with the masses). I embraced it today though.

The upgrades and approach from Cholla is nice, with the restroom facilities and water, etc. The route up is more defined with the blue reflectors as well.

On the way down Echo, I took a side trip at the saddle to watch a few rock climbers.

I also skirted the west side, from the small loop that departs from the Echo Trailhead. The route eventually peters out and I returned to go back over.

Lots of folks out enjoying the nice 'winter" weather.

I've rock climbed many times at Camelback, but only hiked to the summit once before today. Started at Cholla TH, up, over, down and then back for the doublet (brief beer break). I gave a guy and his grandson some water on the second descent after we coaxed him to turn back. They only had a pint capacity. I doubt they would've made it without more assistance, if they'd gone for the summit. Extreme heat restrictions 100% progress.

Camel toe2toe starting on the Cholla side - really fun hike! It was fun to experience the Echo side with all the commotion and then get to go back to the Cholla side with mostly quiet. Cool little contrast of a hike.

Hiked Camelback Mountain With Victoria.

This was a while back so I don't have any specific details to share, just getting the trip off the phone and into the triplogs.

I've had this hike on my wish list but put it off for so long because of the drive and because I thought it would be good to go with someone. Today I needed to pick up some hardwood flooring in the PHX area, so I decided to make better use of the drive up. I ended up solo hiking this one. I could not believe how busy it was on a Friday morning. I started the hike at 10:20 am. It was a bit chilly in the earlier hours but it warmed up fast and felt like an 80 degree day. There had to be 50 or 60 people on the summit. I met a guy from Houston TX who won tickets to the Superbowl. He was out here for the first time, enjoyed the mountains but said there really aren't any mountains anywhere near Houston. I learned that it costs $13,000 per ticket to go to the Superbowl. He was 1 of 6 who won it. Amazing story.

Beautiful day. Went up the new Cholla Trail, down the Echo Canyon Trail, then looped back around to the Cholla trailhead on the roads, looking at some of the houses along the way. Crowds not too bad on the Cholla and Echo trails. About 25-30 people hanging out at the summit. Fewer people than expected. Nice to get outside. Perfect temperature. Should've brought sunscreen.

Did the double today. Trying to get back into shape and this was a good choice. Barely any people on Cholla and not much on Echo starting out, but got busy as we're finishing. Went up Echo, down Cholla, up Cholla, and back down Echo. I like the improvements on Cholla. I still prefer Cholla over Echo, the new facilities were a good addition.

Figured if 4,000-ft over deadfall in blistering above-freezing temps is doable, I could do a slightly more strenuous hike than Piestewa.

The trailhead was loaded with college kids, so I skipped the 30-minute pre-hike stretch.
(I haven't stretched since 1984)

I saw Augustine coming, so I figured I better get moving because he's ridiculously fast bouncing off the sides. He was on his second lap down, when I was halfway down my first. One of the groups was hemming and hawing about his speed, I didn't say a word but they have no idea. He's one of the few I know that can crank out three-plus laps near 110°.

As much as I despise the footing, the whacky conversations are worthy. One lady was adamant about directing people. She was babbling on and on (what simply could have been straight up). Pretty sure she was directing them to the gold elevators at the Mirage.
