Realized fr142 is good everywhere but the steps in the southern few miles, so I started via 144/142 west of New Tank. Closer start than the conventional road walk route.

Same as ever Cash Tank to The Garden. About as good as it gets. I posted a Meadow Canyon Ridge route before, but this is the official exit. Mostly used by canyoneers descending Jacob's Ladder. Well defined, trailed the whole way out. Makes a ton of sense to head back up canyon, but I've never been able to not take my time on the way down. Makes sense to me to come down slowly and take the shorter, quicker way out.

Nobody on the day, water starting to feel cold in the shade.

A couple of observations regarding the hike description:

"This moderate canyon jaunt starts at the end of FR142B. Albeit bumpy it is accessible via a non 4x4 high clearance vehicle."

The trailhead is at the end of FR142J (not 142B). As for accessibility with a non-4x4, maybe, but the road is definitely rough--and unrelentingly so. High clearance is a must (with a good skid plate), and as it turned out the "high(er)" clearance of our Kia Telluride was not nearly high enough. We made it in about 1 mile before calling it quits. For reference, things get pretty bad at the S-curve in the road, where it crosses a drainage.

Our plan was to camp at the TH, but having made it only 1 mile into the 6-mile drive, we committed to turn our 3.6 mile hike into at least a 13.6 mile hike. No biggie, though.

The camp spot was pleasant, as was the evening. No wind and no moon, making for a lovely view of the stars.

The next morning, we got on the trail around 6:30. Before we left camp, a Forerunner drove by with a couple of women. We assumed we would see them at the TH.

The road hike was easy/fine. Arriving at the trailhead, we didn't see the Forerunner, but another family with two teen/tween kids was camping there. We visited for a minute or two and they complained about the biting gnats. Hadn't been a problem at our campsite.

The family was planning to head down later in the morning. We wished them well and headed down.

The route to the creek was surprisingly well defined. Very few spots in which it wasn't clear where to go. The hardest part is finding the correct and unmarked drop in point. We had the HAZ track downloaded, so it wasn't an issue for us.

The route down is steep in spots and loose, but we managed to make it down without any spills. I brought my trekking poles and they were useful for the descent. I also wore my hiking shoes down to the creek and then swapped them for Tevas. I left my hiking shoes at the entry point (and should have left my poles, too).

The path to the Hanging Gardens was magical. We took our time, with several stops to cliff jump and play around. I used a donut tube; my buddies used a large pool noodle and an open-water swim buoy. The latter were smaller/less weight, but required them to be more in the water, and through the narrows, they got a little chilled, and had to walk more on the slippery rocks, whereas I was able to float to the very end of the swimmers. My donut tube had a rope edge that allowed me to sling it over my back and clip it to my camelback, for hands-free hiking. I was very happy with my choice.

The White Box is a special place. and the swimmers generally were a blast. Likewise, the Hanging Gardens were even cooler than I envisioned.

Although we had enjoyed relative solitude through the creek, we did pass a group of three coming back from the Gardens after spending the night there. And a couple of groups were following us through, including the two Forerunner women, who apparently had made it to the TH after all.

We all converged at the Gardens, along with a couple of guys who had bushwhacked straight down to the Gardens on a less used route that arrives immediately upstream of the Gardens. I climbed up the route a little way. It didn't look too bad, and that is what the two guys also reported.

Just down from the Gardens is a deep swimming hole with a 25-30 foot cliff jump, which we tried.

Before leaving, we checked out the cool/hidden campsite above the Gardens. Great overnight spot.

The trip back was just as amazing, and with better lighting for photos :-).

The climb out from the creek was a grind--and hot, but didn't last long.

Just as we emerged from the canyon, our Forerunner friends were pulling out of the trailhead. We decided to ask them for a ride back to our car. They obliged. We piled in the back, and although it was slightly faster than hiking, it was still pretty brutal. In the end, I'm glad for the rough road acting as a barrier to entry.

Very cool place. :y:

Walked about the last .8 ish on the road because we were tired of the drive. Stopped a few times midtrail and contemplated heading out due to dark clouds and sprinkles that passed over quickly, but overall blue skies and white clouds. Definitely a little anxiety inducing with the weather.

Stormy morning but my brother was only in town for a few days and the forecast was only getting worse. Decided to have a go figuring we could make the garden before the rain and bail out via the east ridge of Meadow Canyon if needed. Ended up doing exactly that. Started from just off 260 at 5:30.

Road walked as far as possible since I knew I wouldn't get far and why spoil a road like that by driving it? Awesome morning for clouds if inauspicious. Muddy roads down to Cash Tank. The trail from there is wide, clear, well cairned. A little sketchy toward the bottom being so slippery from the rain.

Made the canyon bottom and got to work destroying an old pair of boots and lounging on the water. Water was just right and at a decent level. It's been well covered but damn what a stretch of canyon. Sun came out from White Box and lasted until Hanging Garden as the clouds built.

Had a break and the rain started to fall. Lasted about a half hour but was enough to drop the air temp and make the cold spring water extra crisp. Ultimately decided not to chance the storms in or above the canyon and to not head back upstream. Any other day it's a no-brainer, we were happy to have gotten one run at it before the rain.

Kept down stream through another pool until a faint trail appeared on the left. To start it was incredibly steep. Had to climb through some brush in the cliff bands, but once a few hundred feet up it was clear and not much of a bushwack. Toward the top found the use trail and some cairns.

Pretty soon walking the roads first thunder of the day. Sky was pretty dark. Made it to the car and hung out for a few minutes before a downpour started that went on and on. Ended up good timing and we were happy we hadn't taken the extra time to head back up the canyon. Didn't see anyone all day, but there were some tire grooves on the roads to Cash Tank when we walked back.

Figured WCC would be one of the few coolish places available today - it was, gorgeous as always, creek flow was a little down from normal but the spring at HG seemed to be pumping out the usual cold, clear water.

I knew about the Backbone Fire but assumed it was too far away, but by late afternoon the sky to the south was solid dark brown and steady sprinkles of ash were coming down. As I headed out I met @Peter_Medal coming in for the weekend with 3 companions. Later driving towards Camp Verde they had closed Hwy 260 eastbound, at which point I realized Backbone must have exploded today. I stopped at the Prescott ranger station and let them know about Peter's group, they said Backbone was approaching 10,000 acres and they were worried about Strawberry and potentially crossing over 260. Thoughts and prayers for all those in the fire paths and for all our firefighters.

Spur of the moment trip to "finish" WCC. Friday evening a friend became available, so we decided that this would likely be our last chance to do what would easily be the most difficult leg of the canyon. Dropped off my Jeep on FR214A on the west side (debating going to Bull Pen, but I figured I'd be too tired to run the easy part of the trail anyways) on Saturday night, and shuttled around to Calloway Tank to camp.

Only went about a mile on FR142A, and decided we're not saving much time, so at 8AM we parked the car and jogged the rest of the way to Cash Tank. The big unknown this weekend was how cold the water would be. At the first swim, we inflated the cheap tubes, and floated down the creek. At this point, the water was cold enough to numb my arms and legs, guessing about 50F. Started getting some sun exposure after the White Box though, and the water was much more pleasant after that.

Took a break at the Hanging Gardens, assessed our pace, and decided we didn't have any reason to be concerned yet. Near Meadow Canyon, we saw a band of coatimundi, with a few juveniles. Despite being so young, they were already very skilled climbers. This is now the farthest north I have seen coati.

Just a couple minutes later, I encountered my first rattler of the year (believe it or not), and he was not happy. It was of the black tailed variety.

Red box... This was my favorite section, mainly because it is amazing and I had never seen it before. My friend thought the white box was prettier, so both were new to him, so that's probably a less biased view. Took a break in the red box and we spotted a pretty big natural arch about halfway up the canyon wall, not sure if it has a name.

After the red box it got a little more miserable, with a stretch where progress was difficult - no dry rocks in the creek, but vegetation covering the banks. Got a little concerned about daylight there for a bit, but the terrain opened up a little bit. It got a little slow again just before Maiden Falls, with a couple of spots requiring a little bit of poking around to find the way around.

Got to the falls around 3:45pm IIRC, and knowing the rest of the way would be easy, I felt a lot better about the daylight situation. Took a couple of minutes to celebrate the fact that we had now seen the entire canyon above Bull Pen, and made good time to the exit.

Somehow managed not to fall off a cliff exiting the canyon, and powered up the hill. It's amazing that even on a steep climb like that, you can move twice as fast as you can in the creek. Got to the top right around sunset, without needing to pull out a light. That's a win in my book.

Overall, took 10.5 hours from car to car, and we weren't dawdling much at all.

I haven’t been here for over 10 years and it was time to go back and see this beautiful place. It was so secret long ago but now there are literally YouTube videos on how to get here.
We had a slow start Saturday and made our way through the bumpy road that seems to be made of basketball sized volcanic rock. We reached the camp at about 3 pm and to my surprise we saw seven vehicles and three 4 wheelers.
We setup camp and made our way down the scree hill of death.
I was wearing my Chacos, after all we were just going to hike upstream a little bit and explore. BAD choice! The tiny marbles took me out once on the way down (agave) and once in the creek (goose egg on elbow). I wore my Salomon shoes with wool socks the next day and they were much better! We came back and camped. The people that camped the night before us had a fire (illegally) and didn’t put it out! :x We put it out and cleaned up the abused little ring for next time.
After eating a delicious breakfast of sausage, eggs and grits, we headed down the marble death scree trail, again.
We did the first shallow narrow and came to the long swim. The water is COLD right now so I was so happy I had my wetsuit top. Cory does well in the cold bit was covered in goosebumps the whole day. We inflated our floatation devices. :D We stopped several times and warmed up in the sun. We passed the “backpackers” on their way out so we had the falls to ourselves for a bit.
Inside the overhang was SO COLD! My smile is huge due to my chattering teeth! Mid June is probably a more ideal time to visit.
It was really neat to come back here, I haven’t seen Joe in years but I am so thankful for all of the neat places he took me! :rollH:
I picked up some trash and tried to pretend this was still the secret place we had visited long ago. Then we hiked out and started the arduous drive out.
Note: I brought my dog but made sure to pick up after any waste. She is an amazing swimmer, but I kept her in her life vest because the swims are so long and cold. Also, Sophie is not a normal dog; she has many skills including rappelling in my backpack. I don’t this is this is a dog friendly hike. Sophie is an amazing dog she goes everywhere with me.

Can't believe it's been 5 years since my last visit to this amazing place. Flooding last winter scoured off a lot of the HG vegetation, but it will recover soon enough.

The two previous annual trips were rappelling via Meadow Canyon. This year the game plan was to take the non-technical approach previously routed by Joe Bartels. Studied the USGS and Google Earth for an approach. We ended up to far west and into a draw that required a series of detours with hoisting packs and canines. It was a very hot day. 3 Dudes, one very tough female and 2 dogs. For the German Shepard it was her first trip of this kind and was scared much of the way. My 4 legged hike partner, it was old hat for him, and he complied with requests and led where able to. He was in dog heaven. Tyson rocks.

Almost 4 hours to the gardens. The jump off the vine was most refreshing. Happy to see others found our kitchen cache and thank you for the can of Jalapeno Spam. We brought too much perishable food but will savor the Spam for next years journey. We had been talking for years about how to conquer camp fire pizza and pulled it off. We made 5 pies. They came out glorious.

Previous two years we had afternoon thunder showers. This year was just the thunder and lightening. Over night there was ample flooding and the pools were muddy in the morning.

Hike partner Mike was destined to use the alleged "secret trail" or mysterious Bartel route for the journey out. After the brutal and punishing descent, I was all four the swims out via White Box. Consensus no. Let the ascent begin. We followed I think game trails and got in 500' in AEG fairly quickly. Everyone was happy. Then all hell broke loose. We cliffed out a couple times with some serious bush whacking. It was yet another hot day. Taking lots of shady breaks for the canines with lots of water. Watched the cumulus's form to the northeast which rolled in and provided much needed shade. The bowl was its steepest on the upper canyon. We stumbled upon a routed trail about 80' in EG from the top which from this location was just under 1/2 mile from the car camp.

I'd like to try finding this mysterious express route once again in the fall or winter but for future August trips either rap in via Meadow with the swims for the return flight.

1st trip
Back to one of my favorite places in AZ for an adventure trip with my long lost brothers. Did this hike 10 years ago and it seemed so much tougher back then. What a difference training and experience make! We had initially planned to make it a 4 day trip to give ourselves plenty of time to soak it all in; we finished in only 3 days.
Day 1 we dropped a truck off at BullPen and started the hike on the 142J 'road' about 4 miles from the drop in point near Cash Tank. The White box and swims were great, as always. Staring up at the narrow canyon walls is still a cool experience. Every time I have been here I have brought one person who has not been before and it is so cool to see their first impressions of the canyon. This time it was little brother and he loved all of it. Made it through the 4 swims and to the Hanging Gardens in 1.5 hours. The spring was flowing nicely and we spent some time swimming and hanging out with 67 year old Ken who had hiked in by himself and was planning on climbing out via a game trail above the spring. No doubt he made it out, this guy was in super senior shape. We hiked about another mile or so and made camp for the night. Enjoyed Whiskey and Wu-Tang.
Day 2 we broke camp about 8 AM and started into very rarely traveled wilderness. Almost right away we noticed the canyon walls were changing from the Coconino white and orange (brown) to the Supai red. On some of the longer, straight stretches we could get out of the water, but most of the hiking here was in the creek as it was mostly narrow without much of any side to travel on. Also, most everywhere on the side of the creek there was Poison Ivy anyway, so as soon as you get a good pace going, its back in the water again. This section of the canyon is really special as it twists and turns its way down. Around every corner was a section that required swimming. Some 20 ft, some 200 ft, some even longer. We passed some nice small waterfalls and we saw a ton of animal signs. What took the longest was the transitioning from water to shore to water again. There were so many boulders hidden underwater that we were constantly running into and having to climb over. These boulders were huge and all covered in algae, so everything was extra slippery.
**We came up with a few songs for the trip during this time: 'Welcome to Shin-land', 'You Slippin', 'The Boulder Slide', and our most popular hit - 'Dont Trust that Rock!'**
There was a short section where the canyon really opens up and we were hiking across desert terrain for a while. After about 6 hours of hiking, we came to probably my favorite area in the canyon. The creek comes out of the canopy and the walls narrow again forming a series of waterfalls that are all lined up in a row. As I looked downstream, it was awesome to see the level of the creek dropping several feet at a time, eventually about 200 ft below the top of the first small falls where I was standing. Again, its either a swim or a climb over rocks on the side to negotiate. There was a long straightaway section of boulder hopping on creek right until we reached Maiden (Indian) (Supai) Falls. We didnt have much time to enjoy the falls area because we were looking for a campsite for the night and they are very few and far between during this entire hike. Another hour or so of the same old swimming, bouldering, and pushing through brush had us on a small sand bar just big enough to accommodate us. A further look around showed an old firepit and signs of a previous camp there. After a long 9 hour day of hiking, we crashed out right at sunset.
Day 3 was pretty easy going as we had planned a 4 day trip but realized we would be done in 3. We were surprised in the AM by a father daughter group of 4 passing through headed to the falls. Great to see the intrepid youngsters out there! Found the trail leading up to the ledge and that eventually goes up the hill to the end of #17 or forks down canyon back to BullPen. The rest of the way back to BullPen was pretty much up on the ledge, on lovely, wonderful, flat, soft dirt. Four Creek crossings later, we were back at BullPen and the end of the trip.
Was kind of disappointed we didnt do another day of this, only because this place NEVER disappoints. No idea on mileage due to no RS running, all the twisting and turning of the canyon, and the constant back and forth across the creek, it felt like 30 or more. Obviously no problem with water. There are about zero escape routes once you get in that Red box section. Campsites are few and far between and totally non existent in most areas. I would say this is my favorite hike in all of AZ! For the truly adventurous, the middle section of this canyon is totally worth exploring at least once in your life.

New HAZ member and Connecticut transplant, Willie, had been wanting to see the Hanging Gardens. After a few failed attempts on his own, we were able to meet up this weekend and make a run. I told him we'd just park and walk the road that he's had trouble with. We did just that. After a nice little stroll, we were at the canyon and heading down. We were the first hikers of the day to enter the canyon. That first swimmer was chilly and shaded. No sunshine until after the White Box. Swimming/floating through that narrow canyon is my favorite part of the trek. Wading through the shallow parts, over slimey boulders that aren't visible through the water, was not. Upon reaching the Gardens, Willie was in awe and we didn't see anyone else until 30mins later when a group of 4 showed up, followed by 2 ladies and 3 large dogs. Willie sprained an ankle the night before and revealed a baseball sized mass of swollen, purple ankle before we departed. We took a slightly drier route back, which basically means navigating through ivy. We must've passed 14 people heading to the Gardens on our way out. The weather was perfect. We had sunshine for the swimming sections, then cloud cover for the climb back out of the canyon, which was over rather quickly. Willie sat down to assess his injury. We still had 5 miles left, I told him it was more like 3, then we pushed on. Walking that road allows you to see how littered with car parts it really is. This was certainly a fun little trek.

Perseid es Meteor Shower, two nights at Hanging Gardens was the plan. Nine of us rapped in via Meadow Canyon (the GPS route was from our Thur night car camp to the first rappel). It sprinkled on us Friday and a whole bunch on SAT.

I got poison ivy 2 years ago in WCC but nothing last year. When we saw the "leaves the three" one of the hike partners said, "ehh, that aint poison, its not shiny". Wrong. I got poison ivy, everywhere. Had to hit Urgent care for a Predno prescription. Leaves of three, let it be. In Meadow Canyon, the ivy is before the first rap on the west side of the drainage and approaching the second rap, again along the west side of the drainage. Most of the exposed Ivy is along the south side of WCC west of the HG and is not easily avoidable. There are some pockets on the trail east of the HG as well.

Explored above and around the gardens.

Got to eat a platter of steamed craw dads. Will do that again.
Added some things to our kitchen cache. We ate like kings.

One hike partner proposed to his gal and she said yes. He went to Hanging Gardens. Congrats.

Clouds did not allow any viewing of shooting stars. :?

On the way out, saw a family of coatimundi.

My Chevy Suburban is officially a Range Rover recovery vehicle.
Towed the Rover on that crap road 3 miles back to 260.

Friday night, nine of us car camped at my "secret trailhead" (cats officially out of the bag) which is exactly 4 miles from Highway 260. This road is slow going. Not for those that get car sick easily. High profile is a must. 4WD is not necessary except possibly in snow/mud/rain. Road Map to Car Camp: [ gps route ] This Car Camp is an ideal spot for those wishing to avoid the grueling extra 2 miles drive to the true HG TH, which, I think that portion of road is much much worse. Also, this an even tastier place to launch for a Meadow Canyon rap loop, just 1.29 miles back to car camp from the Hanging Gardens TH. I think next year I am going to mountain bike to Car Camp, so done with that drive. I'd rather watch water boil, or paint dry.

Friday night and Saturday morning there was no wind, no rain, beautiful sunrise and sunset. We built a rather girthy fire ring and left some ideal accessories for future trips (or others). We agreed we would launch at 7AM and I led my peeps on a 1.41 mile (bushwack) route to just before the first rappel into Meadow Canyon. Flawless. Planned route was 1.5 miles. There was an unavoidable swim through a large pool just before the first rap. A brisk little fully clothed swim with a backpack on will definitely wake ya up in the morning.

Meadow Canyon is an ideal canyon for beginner canyoneers... just 4 raps, none of which are that difficult. Our very experienced lead ropers (Joe and Jennifer) were awesome. They checked and re-checked each anchor and each connection. The first rap, Joe wanted everyone to take their backpacks off, just in case, which we slowly lowered down. The second rap of the day was only a 40' and was my first with a pack on. Funny, I am afraid of heights, but have no fear on a harness connected to a rope, climbing or rapping.

We got to the Hanging Gardens just about the time dark evil clouds rolled in. Not to long after we got our tents set up it started to rain. It was beautiful. I cant imagine to be in a better place then Hanging Gardens in a drizzly rain. My grill grate was still there left from last year. After everyone had a chance to take a power nap and get their evening accommodations dialed in the rain stopped. Time for wood harvest. Mike and I found a 4" to 6" 120lb +/- oak widow maker. Should be more then sufficient for the evening and morning fire. Kyle (ASUAvaitor) connected up with us and helped with the destruction of this oak beast and joined us for dinner.

By request, made two batches of a traditional beef stew with a slight twist, added chicken and Hatch green chilis. Think we were all lights out by Hikers Midnight. Not leaving the stew pot at camp to become canyon booty, have it well hid for next years feasts.

Sunday morning we all agreed to depart around 10am. Departing the HG, with full pack on, jumped off the rope to introduce the cold water sting we will be enduring through White Box. Video in and around the HG: https://youtube.com ... ZUMM

Once up top at the official HG TH, I mapped a slightly shorter bushwack back to TH, which ended up being just 1.29 miles vs. 1.5 from last year.

I think next year, an ideal way to do this would be to simply park inside the gate just off Highway 260 and mountain bike ride over to TH.

With the summer heat, staying so busy, and the back issues, I haven't been out hiking for 2 months and this was a great jump back in! Took 2 of the kids, Gabby Dog, and my buddy Jamaal down to the Hanging Gardens for a few days. This is my 6th time to this part of WCC and am always glad to share it with anyone brave enough to make the trip.
Got rained on pretty good Friday night so the roads were very muddy and I wasn't taking any chances on that god-forsaken 142A, so we parked a few miles down the road. Started down the hill early Saturday morning and that AZ sun was already burning it up. That first splash of water is so refreshing! When we got to the creek we actually ran into a few guys I used to work with; Small world!! They had planned to camp at the gardens, also, but were extremely under prepared and never even made it there. Down inside that canyon is another world altogether. It is hard to believe this place exists in Arizona. Jamaal was in awe the entire time. It is so amazing how green and alive it is compared to the surrounding desert. The views were breathtaking as usual, the swimming sections were fun as usual, the underwater rocks were slippery as usual, and everyone fell and got banged up several times.. as usual. Between the last big swimmer and the gardens there is a TON of poison ivy. All of us wore long socks and knew exactly which plants to avoid, and as of this writing - NO ITCHING!! A lot of the beaches we used to fish for crawdads were all overgrown, however some awesome person had left a trap so we baited it up and were able to have one of the famous crawdad dinners that WCC and I are known for. The kids and dog had a great time swimming in the pool and waterfalls at the gardens. Hammock camped at the gardens for the night. Waking up next to that waterfall and in that lush environment is such a great feeling to have, I could have stayed there for a week, but alas, we still have bills to pay in the real world. Saw my first rattlesnake in the wild! Saw a lot of squirrels, a lot of lizards, and a lot of different cool looking birds. Came back out Sunday afternoon/evening avoiding the sun. Fortunately we able to hitch a ride back to the truck by some fellow hikers and soon to be HAZ'ers!
During the two days we saw 25 people in this part of the canyon. 25!! Maybe due to the restrictions at Fossil Creek or maybe its just becoming more well known, but this trip has become quite popular and this concerns me for a lot of reasons. There was a lot of trash in the canyon. Some lady got stuck in the mud while on the 'road'. There were several people who were not prepared physically or gear-wise and did not belong down there. But who am I to judge? I brought 2 of my kids and a dog along.. Overall had a great trip! It was nice to get back into nature and share such an amazing place with my kiddos and good friend.

Tips for the hike:

Have a good truck with a lot of clearance, dont chance that 'road'.
Skip the sandals and wear durable shoes with a good sole.
Know what poison ivy looks like. Wear pants or long socks and avoid it!
Dont bring the kitchen sink.
Be in shape and know how to swim.
Dry bag your stuff. Floating your pack on a tube never works out.
Plan your hike out for later in the day after the sun is setting to avoid the roasting while hiking up the hill.

Myself and two friends drove to the edge of the canyon Friday Night. FR 142 hasn't gotten any smoother since the last time I was here, but I think that's a good thing! ;) We car camped then headed down into the canyon bright and early hoping to get to the camp site at the gardens first. :scared: We passed a group of 3-4 camped near the power lines, then a couple camped at canyon edge and another vehicle was parked at canyon edge too, so we were thinking our chances at the Gardens camp site were slim.

We entered the canyon and proceeded down, eventually passing 3 younger fellows who said it was their first time in the canyon and had ventured down about halfway to the hanging gardens at night. I assumed after busting their behinds on the slippery rocks multiple times, they called it a night and camped on the huge flat boulder in the middle of the creek bed about halfway between the White box and the Gardens. I asked if they knew of any other folks ahead of us, which they said no, so we pushed on to claim our hammock spots.

As we neared the Hanging Gardens about 100 yards upstream we began hearing what we thought were campers building rock sofas at the camp site. Sounded like large flat rocks being stacked on top of each other and echoed through the canyon. I was a little disappointed at the thought someone had beat us there until I cleared some brush and I saw movement across the steam (Camp site side of the creek). Two large Big Horn Sheep had been butting heads making the sound. Literally we were about 40 feet away from them across the water. I managed to get some video before they turned and climbed up a very steep portion of the canyon wall. Amazing sight!!!

Anyway, we arrived and had the camp site to ourselves for about an hour+ until several families and groups of college kids arrived to enjoy the area. Nice rope swing with a harness set up, and some rock jumping too. Everyone left around 4ish pm and we had the place to ourselves for the night. Amazing night in the canyon with a slight breeze and the sounds of the Hanging Gardens waterfall. Heaven on Earth!!! :y:

Packed up in the morning and headed back upstream. That first swimmer of the morning...my voice raised an octave or two! :o Rest of the way out was beautiful. As we were about to drive away a group of hikers hitched a ride from us back to the power lines where they were parked. Despite FR142 being so rough, there sure was a lot of traffic at the WB&HG this weekend. Very special spot!

Not sure if this will work, but here's a link to the video of the Bighorn.

It is great to finally get this area of WCC off the bucket list. Getting to the start of the hike was arguably the hardest part of this whole adventure, taking over an hour each way to get through the rough terrain. Once we arrived at the start of the hike there were several cars parked there, definitely more than i would have thought.
This past saturday we got perfect weather, not a cloud in the sky, a bit warm but not terribly hot either. The water temperature was PERFECT!!! In no way any of us felt cold at all, even while swimming in the shaded areas. This entire area was paradise on earth, definitely of of Arizona's hidden gems.....although the road to get there is super pooey, i do think its better that way just to keep the "fossil creek types" away from there.
This is one of those "yearly" trip type places. Cant wait to go back there next year.
