Black Mountain is in extreme SE Kentucky very near the Virginia line. Harlan County is in the heart of Appalachian coal mining country.
I had intended to hike from pavement on highway 160, but it was raining so I drove in on a gravel road almost all the way to the summit.
I made the short walk to the summit, located the benchmark under a dilapidated fire lookout tower, and walked around for a few minutes. Trees blocked the views, but it was foggy and I wouldn't have been able to see much anyway.
This was my 22nd state highpoint and 176th county highpoint. |
