On our second day in Stanley we hiked up to a frozen Sawtooth Lake. Great trails to the lake and despite the frozen water, we only encountered a little snow on the hike up. We were the first car at the trailhead when we started, but we ran into several people on the way down.

This was just a little leg stretcher after the long day and a half ish drive up from Phoenix. This was actually my second time hiking this portion of the trail, but I did not go to the falls this time, as rain was coming and I wanted to make sure I was settled at camp before it hit.

Immaculate trails as one would expect, not a lot of people on the trail, but this is rare for this trail and trailhead area.

This was me and Dot’s first hike of several over a 13 day period of camping, hiking and circumnavigating the entire Bitterroot Mountain Range. We spent the first few days in Stanley and then made our first forays into the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, before relocating to Darby Montana for nearly a week to continue my exploration of the southern Bitterroot Wilderness. From there we headed west and then south to encircle the entire mountain range with stops at the remote Elk summit and a trip down highway 12 to explore the lower reaches of the famed Lochsa and Selway River systems.

I completed this hike solo because when the day began Carrie thought she might be holding the dog back on hiking in order to make sure she was rested for our upcoming three day backpack in the Sawtooths.

Once again I found myself starting on the Iron Creek-Stanley Lake Trail which was conveniently located at the campground where we were staying. The first big attraction of this hike was Sawtooth Lake. This lake is truly a gem and perhaps one of my favorite lakes of the Sawtooth Wilderness and maybe the entire trip. The views of the lake only got better as I climbed the modest pass at the lake's northwest end. From the pass my hike entered a pretty good burn zone that lasted nearly all the way to Observation Peak. Only the upper portions of the Observation Peak Trail were spared from this fire. Nevertheless, I still found the trail very scenic. The wildflowers were popping and the McGown Lakes area was still nice despite the general absence of trees. I thought the hike might be over when I reached the Observation Peak trail, as the lower portion of the trail had been wiped out by erosion, but after only a few hundred feet I was able to pick up the distinct switchbacks marking the initial climb to the peak. The peak and the final climb offered some tremendous views of the jagged Sawtooth range, but the peak itself is just a pretty indiscriminate high rising hill in comparison to the surrounding peaks. I did not stay long as Carrie was waiting, but did take a quick break to look through the full register and eat a quick snack. I returned the way I came.

This was our second hike in the Sawtooth Wilderness. We stayed the night before at the Iron Creek Campground, which is a very short walk from the trailhead

For the second day in a row we were on the Stanley Lake Trail, but this time we were starting from the Iron Creek Trailhead. From the Stanley Lake Trail we turned left on Aspen way and continued to the turn off for the informal trail leading up to Goat Lake. The climb to the lake was a little steep and loose, but we did fine and so did the dog. Goat Falls were pretty impressive and the lake was very scenic. However, we had to share it with some backpackers and a group of day hikers. This is clearly a tough lake to find solitude on during peak hiking season. Nevertheless, we still enjoyed a nice long break at the lake. After relaxing for a bit at the lake, we headed back the way we came.

This was our first hike in the Sawtooths. We did not get to the area until after 5 p.m., but that was still plenty of time to complete this easy little hike with a couple of cool destinations.

Our first stop was the quaint but scenic Lady Face Falls. The falls are only a short detour off the main trail and require a little scrambling to get some pictures, but they are generally pretty easy to reach. The next stop was Bridal Veil Falls, which are intended to be viewed from the trail. The view is from afar, but the beauty and size of this scenic waterfall is still apparent. After a half hearted attempt to take the use trail up to the falls, we turned around and returned to the trailhead the way we came. This portion of the Stanley Lake Trail is very well maintained and easy. It resembles a dirt side walk than a traditional single track trail and even has some wooden walkway sections across some muddy areas. This would be a perfect hike for a family, or someone looking for something easy with a lot of bang for their buck.
