Route Scout Route Recorded  on Route Scout | Pop | Map | Popup | MapDEX
This adventure was started with a 5.15-mile mountain bike ride (black) and finished with the same 5.15-mile bike ride (yellow) of the mostly rugged Kelly Point Road. The hike and climb route (red) was a good way to get this neat Grand Canyon summit. The alternative approach is a long, rough dirt road from the north that would likely be easier on a motorcycle or in a side-by-side rather than a stock 4x4 vehicle. After the three-mile rim hike, we dropped in and worked our way into a drainage that wasn't too brushy. The geology was bizarre with a mix of strata and occasional ledge downclimbs. The Coconino is nearly nonexistent in this part of the canyon. The Supai traverse wasn't as flat as anticipated and involved some significant up and down sections to cross the transversing ravines. There was an old catchment and road near the Hermit saddle where the route became easier. The final approach was on the steep NW side of the peak, where a lower limestone ledge could be bypassed on the left, near the top, to access the obvious SW side route. We scrambled a few chimneys and then ledges to gain the exhilarating broken arete that reached the summit. The day was really windy, which helped moderate the warm temperatures and extend our water supply. It was gratifying to finally tick this one off on a first attempt. There were only four other parties signed in, but I know of several others who weren't signed in that have been to this summit.

Day 1
I started my trip a day earlier than my buddies. I decided to hit a couple of Arizona "landmarks." It was a couple short 4x4 trails to get to these destinations. I did enjoy a nice sunset at the campsite while cooking dinner.

Day 3
We started the day camping in Grand Gulch Canyon. After breakfast, we headed out of the canyon toward Grand Gulch Mine. We spend a couple hours exploring the area. There are still a lot of old buildings, old equipment and an airstrip in the area. We then headed to Mount Dellenbough. Mount Dellenbough is a nice hike with a steady incline. You can see some of the Grand Canyon from the top. We where fortunate enough to have cloud cover for the midday hike. We did a quick stop at Warring Ranch then headed to Blue Mountain. Blue Mountain has been on my wish list for a while. Its in a very remote area. We had to move two trees off the road to even get to the hike. It seams nobody has been in the area in a while. Blue Mountain is an off-trail hike to the top. My friends didnt enjoy this hike as much as I did. You do get a decent view of Mount Dellenbaugh and some views of the canyon. Now its finally time to check out the Kelly Point Overlook. Kelly Point overlook has been on my list for 6+ years. With a couple flat tires(on my friends truck,) we where not able to make it to this spot on our last trip. We opted for Twin Point Overlook [ photoset ] . Twin Point didnt disappoint. I wanted to see the sunset and the sunrise at these locations. On our last trip, we wouldnt have made Kelly Point in time for the sunset. This trip we made it. Its a great camping spot. You even have some cell service here. The closest town is Peach Springs, just over the canyon(20 miles.) We did enjoy good food, great conversation, an amazing sunset and sunrise. If I was to do it again, I would have sat here for an extra day.
