Last day of Fall Break with the tender chickens. Bought two awesome Forest Service maps that have light lamination but fold well and show all the tiny details of FR and branches of FR.

Kids loved the playground. Did petroglyphs loop. Nice weather 75 and breezy.

Finally got paid to hike! :y:
I went to Lyman Lake SP to fill in for a couple days - and I'm going again next week.
Hiked the PP trail, garbage bag in hand, and as I sat for a moment on a rock next to the lake I thought "now THIS is what being a park ranger is supposed to be!"
The lake's water level is low - but it's still a huge lake ... and extremely underused. On this Saturday in July, the handful of boaters, anglers, and campers had all the room to roam that they could have wanted - the lack of people was stunning to me.
The petroglyphs are cool, the lake is beautiful, and the camping is nice - they even allow beach camping! - there are also cabins like at Dead Horse.
Only negative is that it's a long drive from just about anywhere.
On the way home I stopped at Fool Hollow to check it out - I had heard nothing but good things - and yes, it's pretty awesome ... would love to work there.

This is a great little day hike. The weather was perfect, in the low 80’s and the sun was out with just a few clouds. The petroglyphs were easy to find and didn’t have any recent additions.
Mike the ranger at the store was telling me that they are trying to get a grant so they can fence in a section of the park to keep a few Buffalo’s in. Years ago a nearby rancher kept Buffalo and it became a symbol of the park. It’s even on the park logo. He was also telling me that the new park manager wants to plan a couple of hundred trees around the lake to help with erosion control, day hiking and fishing.
And the big news is that to help increase tourism to the lake they are planning on taking tours to the petroglyphs on the far side of the lake next year. They are planning on making an “official” trail and they are going to be using the FS pontoon boat to make trips 1 or 2 time a day.
I think Mike was glad to have someone to talk.

Nice easy hike around the penisula. Stopped to view and photograph all the petroglyphs. This hike is very much worth while.

I did this walk on August 15, 2010. Just ran across the photos again, and thought I would share here.

After visiting family in Eagar/Springerville during the weekend, we decided to detour to Lyman Lake State Park on the way home. I read the boards on the way in, and saw that there were petroglyphs on the rocks around the lake. I wanted to go find them, so I grabbed a bottle of water and set off. The trail was well built, easy to follow, and just a small climb up to the top. There are several little side trails you can take to see different petroglyphs. Very easy for most, and I really enjoyed myself. The view from the top was pretty cool too. Not long after we visited, the forest service closed the place.

Lynn, Tobyn, and I did the Petroglyph Loop Trail during a break driving 500 miles back from Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. There is a Ranger-guided pontoon boat tour every Saturday and Sunday to the "Ultimate" Petroglyph Site on the east shore and then on to the Rattlesnake Point Pueblo at the south end of the lake.

Lyman Lake [see link: http://hikearizona.com/images/maps/lyman.jpg ] had little boat traffic and the few fisherman we talked to all indicated they'd already caught a fish or two. I think a return visit will be in the near future...
