| partners | | Delano has been on my wishlist for a while now, and I told everyone that of all the potential hikes we could do over the long weekend, this was the only one I insisted we get done. The drive up from Beaver, UT is beautiful. Even if you're not going to hike, just making the drive is awesome. Once we found the trailhead and parked, it was already mid-late morning. No worries, the weather was perfect, not a cloud in the sky.
The trail starts to head uphill immediately, and is steep, but good footing helps to not make it feel too bad. We slowly and steadily made our way up the mountain, with lots of short breaks for pictures. Plenty of wildflowers and grasshoppers. Getting towards the top, there was still snow in a few places, which the kids played in for a few minutes.
As we neared the false summit, the breeze turned into a wind, and by the time we reached the summit, it was a strong wind. We ducked down into the rocks and out of the wind and took a long break and plenty of pictures. I had noticed another trail on the north side of the peak and suggested (okay, maybe insisted) that we check it out and assured everyone that it would lead to the road. I had no way of knowing this, except an educated guess that that trail had to start somewhere, and since it was traversing near where the road topped out to the west, that it probably led there.
Once I had convinced everyone that we wouldn't die on the tundra, we headed down to pick up that trail. There was still a big section of snow below the summit that we walked around, then picked up the faint trail and headed off to the northwest. At times, the trail was almost non-existent, but we could see it clearly ahead, so just kept aiming towards it. At one saddle, we debated dropping straight down to Poison Creek (short and very steep), or continuing to head towards the road (longer and less steep), finally deciding on the longer option. Mountain goats had appeared behind us where we were probably 15 minutes prior, so we got a few pictures of them in the distance.
As we headed west, the trail met up with and turned into an old road. We followed that old road until it reached FS-123. From here, it was just a walk down the road until we reached the car. Holiday traffic had lots of people out on the road in their four-wheeled toys, and I wasn't thrilled about the kids walking on the road with that amount of traffic, so I told everyone we would walk a short distance down the road to Mud Lake, where they could stop and I would go get the car and pick them up. I walked another mile and a half down the road to the car (very dusty!), then drove back up to get everyone. The kids were happy to cut that mileage off their hike, and I covered that distance pretty quickly, so they got to play at the lake for the 30 minutes or so it took for me to get back to them.
Gorgeous day, and the Tushar Mtns look like they offer a lot of hiking opportunities. I'm looking forward to planning another trip up there for some bigger hikes. |
