Last day of vacation. Wife and I stayed at Kanab for a day in route to Phoenix. Got an early morning hike on one of the few trails available in Kanab, the K-Hill trail. This is one of 7 trails that make up the Kanab Community Non Motorized Trails. The K-Hill trail actually has three access points and connects with four other trails that run along the base of the mountains to the north of Kanab. I utilized the eastern most point, which is a dirt lot adjacent to a line of homes. The dirt lot/cul-de-sac can accommodate 10 cars, but I doubt if this would ever be an issue. This trail, I am sure, is more of a local “haunt”. For the first 1.25 miles the trail is pretty much a road. A truck could drive most of this section without problem. There are some ups and downs but nothing extreme. The high point may get you 60 ft above the town of Kanab. About .7 miles in I got a little confused. There are markers throughout the trail to make sure you don’t lose it :-s . (Once again we are talking a road). Anyway, at this point, there is a marker with an arrow pointing you off the road. I get a little excited thinking this may be the start of a single track. I immediately crossed a bridge made of 2 solid wooden beams. I start to look up an around to see where the trail goes from there. It turns out it doesn’t…the path goes back to the road. The arrowed marker had me cross a bridge, only to then have me go 15 ft to get back on the road  Not sure the purpose of that. The road I bypassed was in perfectly good shape. The trail does become more of a single track after 1.25. Still wide enough for two people, but not wide enough for a truck. At this point the trail is descending gradually as it wraps around the contours of the base of the mountain. Around 1.7 miles there is a junction. Turning left will get you to the western TH for K-Hill and Toms Canyon. Turning right at the juncture will put you on Toms Canyon Trail. My goal was to do K-Hill, so I hit the TH and turn around. The trail offers some nice views of the mountain side and of the town of Kanab. There are actually 4 or 5 benches along the way where one can rest and take in the sights if they are so inclined.

An ok trail to stretch legs or exercise, but there are better trails out there. I did Squaw trail a few a few years ago and I would definitely recommend that. That being said, I did see 7 users on the trail. Mainly dog walkers and retirees enjoying the morning. Also saw 5 deer making their way up the slope.

I had some more ambitious hikes planned for our family reunion time in Kanab, but ultimately opted for some lower key alternatives that provided more opportunity to do what reunions are for—hang out with family.

The trail itself doesn’t actually go to the K, but just circles beneath it. To get to the K involves a little scrambling, but rewards with a nice view of the town and surrounding area.

This is a short hike up to the “K” on the hill above the town. Marking the hillside with the town/city’s initial letter isn’t unique to Utah, but it is ubiquitous here.
