Went looking for fall colors. The colors weren't quite at their peak when we were here last week, so we returned to check it out. The rim was enclosed in a cloud when we arrived. The cloud eventually dispersed, but it remained overcast and windy, with the sun occasionally peeking through. It was chillier than expected. Rim Road was very muddy, and slippery in some parts. We saw 2 vehicles slide. Gentry Canyon was very pleasant, almost completely flat, wide trail, with a lot of pines, a lot of leafless trees, and intermittent clusters of yellow/orange foliage. The colors were past their peak, with a lot of leaves on the ground. One of us was one week postoperative so this was a perfect activity. We went out 2 miles, then returned the way we came. The pine and fallen leaves scent was amazing and refreshing. It was good to get away from all the paperwork to experience this.

Hiked Gentry Canyon as far as Bessemer Crossing which made a nice loop. The canyon walk was pleasant. The canyon crawl part was short and after it opened up we didn't have to criss-cross too many times. Saw some elk crossing the canyon before Bessemer Crossing. The hike back on FR40/40A was quite nice. The road was more like a two track trail than a jeep trail. I missed a turn just south of Bessemer Crossing but realized my mistake in about .2 miles, backtracked, and was good to go.

Open draw was not open, was pretty dry except for a few skunky pooks, and the lower 0.4 miles before meeting Gentry is choked up requiring scrambling and crawling over and under dead trees. Ran into 2 hunters near the meadow/study area.

Gentry was mostly great, the lower section where it meets Open draw is not consistently good, but except for a 0.5 mile section below "The Spring Box" (which is choked with trees and nearly impassible) is generally a wonderful hike through meadow after meadow.

There was a lot of water in this area, and while the springbox is not functioning, the area around the spring had at least a foot of water.

Backbone blew up Friday afternoon, and literally changed our plans while we were driving north. We had to scrap our plans and come up with an alternative on the fly. Out of the path of the fire we managed to find a great spot to camp and put together a nice loop for our Saturday linking Gentry canyon to Double Cabin, O'Haco, and back with a little break at the puddle once known as Knoll Lake.

Smoke was evident all weekend, and ash "snowed" down on us. Blustery winds had us wondering about the fate of Pine and Strawberry, so upon returning to civilization we were pleased to learn the fire lines had held.

Headed up to the rim for the final time this year to check out the fall colors one last time. Scouted out a couple spots in Gentry Canyon a few weeks back that I wanted to come back to once it was closer to peak color. Colors are peaking now on most trees, although some have lost nearly all there leaves. Not much time left before most are bare till next year. Came across a pretty fresh pile of elk internal organs at Gentry Spring. Apparently whoever killed the elk decided to leave the stomach, intestines and heart :(. The rim never disappoints with its color show.

Set out to find some fall colors on the rim! Started the day at the Turkey Beaver area and just roamed around to where we saw colors. It was pretty in there, but a lot of the leaves had already fallen. There are random patches that are very beautiful if you go off exploring. We took a couple of breaks in remote areas and stayed very quiet, so hopeful for a bear sighting. We saw lots of elk tracks but did not see any wildlife (or other people) until we got back to the road. Any of the creek beds we saw were completely dry, as expected. Although it was beautiful and quiet, we wanted to see more and thankfully were camping on the rim so could continue the leaf peeping search the following day! More to come in my next log.

I've been hitting the Mogollon Rim pretty hard this year, but I need to up my game if I will ever reach my goal of hiking all the its named canyons. This week's objective was Gentry Canyon. I hiked options 3 and 4. If you are wondering why my mileage and AEG are greater, it is because of all the wandering back & forth I do, checking routes, looking for the best photo ops, etc. 📸

I started hiking from the same trailhead as my Open Draw and Turkey Creek hikes. I could have headed straight across FR 91, towards the low ground, but instead headed north along FR 91 to the first unnamed tank, where I turned left down an unnumbered jeep trail. Gentry Spring, at the north end of the prairie, had a small pool of muddy water; no flow. A tree was fenced off for a reason I could not determine; it was kinda scraggly. There were vehicle tracks across the prairie. 🤭

Travelling along Gentry Canyon, a small black bear ran across the grassy shelf 150 yds. ahead of me. It was my first bear sighting since Moscow Peak in 2015 ( [ photo ] ). I didn't see mama, but I had my head on a swivel for the next ten minutes! 🐻

After 3.8 miles of hiking, I reached Bessemer Crossing. I turned left (west) up FR 40. Double Cabin -- which I assume is two cabins -- is not where the single topo stone building symbol ■ says it is. All I found there was an old fence post, with some scraggly barbwire. The remains of the large log cabin are, in fact, quite obvious and directly across from Double Cabin Spring. I assume what remains of the "other" cabin is a nearby broken cement foundation. The spring is fenced off with relatively fresh barbwire, so I don't know if it is flowing. The spring box was dry & dusty.

A ½ mile north of Bessemer Crossing, Gentry Canyon tightens up for the final mile to Open Draw. There are shallow, clear, pools with barely perceptible flow, but travel is still not bad.

I ate lunch just short of Open Draw, then headed 150 ft. up the elk trail to FR 40G, which follows the contour line for 1¼ miles southwest to FR 40, just above Bessemer Crossing.

Check out the Guide I just added. 👆

¾ of a mile south of Bessemer Crossing on FR 40A, the jeep trail splits: The obvious trail is left, but that is FR 40A1. Note the "1": It matters. I was a ½ mile up FR 40A1, before I realized my mistake. I could have continued up to FR 91, then back to the trailhead, but that was not my plan, so I doubled back. Instead, split right. 🧭

The 4¼ miles of FR 40G, FR 40A and FR 91M were shady, smooth, almost flat, and showed no signs of recent vehicle traffic. Anyone could walk it. 👍

But my favorite part of hiking at the east end of the Mogollon Rim is making a post-hike stop at the Woods Canyon Lake bait shop for ice cream (strawberry shortcake) and ice cold hiking beer (Sam Adam's Octoberfest Märzen). 🍦🍺🤗

The spring box was bone dry, but there was more evidence of puddling below the spring in Gentry Canyon, than above Bessemer Crossing.

I did not see any flow, but there was a small, muddy, puddle at the source. (Presumably, the outlet was underwater ...)
