This was a sandwich day in between a couple of hikes that I wanted to do, and since my hiking buddy had never done this one we decided to add it to our itinerary. I had done the hike last summer, and didn't mind doing it again.

We drove in and parked about 3/4 mile past Timber Creek CG, which is about as far as you can go on the road. We were in his CRV, and it wasn't a problem to get there.

The hike followed a trail much of the way, but then there is slope that you have to go up to get to a ridgeline. There are some talus fields on the slope, but we managed to avoid them for the most part. Once on the ridgeline, it is easy hike over to the summit.

This isn't my favorite hike ever, but there are some nice views on the summit, so I was glad to do this one again.

There were some sections lower down that had some nice spring flowers, and there were lots of small flowers on the slope up to the ridgeline.

This was my 3rd hike(out of 6) on an 8 day road trip to bag some peaks that had been on my radar screen. North Schell is an ultraprominent peak, which was why it was on my to-do list.

The first 1.75 miles or so was on a pretty decent trail that mostly went alongside a drainage/wash/gully/whatever-you-want-to-call-it. I lost the trail for a bit coming out of the drainage, but then picked it back up. At this point I was on the west side of a ridgeline, and the route called for leaving the trail and heading east up to the ridgeline.

This was a steep ascent up a talus slope to the ridgeline -- I'd say it gained 800-900 feet in elevation over about 3/4 mile. I was mostly walking on loose, irregularly shaped rocks, which isn't exactly my cup of tea. The sun had come over the ridgeline and I was looking directly into the sun on the way up, so I was able to look very far ahead.

I plodded through it and managed to make the ridgeline. From there it was an easy, relatively flat walk to just below the summit, where there was a bit of class 2 rock scrambling to get to the summit. The views were nice, although it was hazy that day.

I went back to the TH the same way that I came up. The talus was a little better going down than going up,

I did not see anyone else out there -- I doubt if this one is hiked too often, so if you like solitude you'll most likely find it on this hike.

This is not among one of my favorite hikes, and while I am glad that I did it, I don't think that I will repeat this one.

Decided to try bagging another ultra since there was one so close. As long as I could get my car there... which turned out to be no problem (although I had to park in the campground).

The lower part of the trail is forested and mellow, with a running creek. Really a pretty area. The farther up the drainage you go, the steeper it gets.

Eventually I got to the end of the trail, and where you head up the deceiving long ridge. Not bad, steep, but not so steep that the talus isn't stable.

Obvious path the rest of the way to the summit. Based on the register it doesn't get a whole lot of traffic.

Outstanding view from the summit, and if you choose the right day, you might be able to do a double summit day with Wheeler.
