Decided to hike to Jeffords peak and the Tortollita Benchmark in a single loop. From Catalina, AZ, I took Oracle to Edwin road and drove West about 5 miles. There was a windmill and a cattle area at this point, which is where I parked. I followed a road North and took a split off to the NW within the first few minutes. At a certain point, I needed to get off the road and head NW to Jeffords peak. I ended up following a canyon for a while, then had to bushwhack in the direction of the peak. The bushwhack was quite easy and there were only a few thorny areas to navigate around. The forecast was a high of 92 today with a 20% chance of rain. I was hoping it would rain as it would be quite refreshing. There were only a few drops on the drive in, and nothing more the entire time I was out there.

I headed down to the Tucson area and hiked up to 3 peaks from 3 different trailheads:
1) Suizo Mountains Highpoint
2) Jeffords Peak
3) Golden Gate Mountain

Suizo Mountains Highpoint
I parked about 1/2 mile from Suizo Well, although I could have driven to the well. However, with such a short hike I did not behind some easy road walking.

From Suizo Well, I headed up to a ridgeline and basically followed the ridgeline all the way to the highpoint. The hike was all offtrail, but it was an easy offtrail. There was the usual desert vegetation (cactus, cholla, palo verde, mesquite, etc) but it was not very thick so it was easy to find pathways around the vegetation. Route finding was not too difficult -- just follow the ridgeline. There were some nice views at the summit, particularly to the west of Picacho and Newman.

Once you leave pavement you'd be driving on Arizona State Land Trust property -- it was a good thing that I had renewed my permit a couple of days before the hike. Google maps will get you to the TH if you search for "Suizo Well".

Jeffords Peak
This is another offtrail hike. This one was a little tougher than Suizo. The vegetation was not too thick, but there was a lot of knee to waist high grass that would hide some of the cactus along the way. Route finding was not always intuitive, and a GPS track was helpful. There were some nice views at the summit, which was enjoyable.

The road in was mostly hard packed dirt and an SUV could make the drive as long as it is dry.

Golden Gate Mountain
This hike was a nice change of pace from the prior 2 hikes because there was a trail the entire way, although it was a bit steep and slippery. I followed the Yetman Trail for about 1/2 mile or so, and then took a well cairned use trail up to the summit. I did not get started until about 3 PM, which was nice because the route went up the east side of the mountain and I was in shade the entire hike. Even though the trail was steep, it was all class 1 hiking until just right before the summit, when there was a bit of class 2 hiking requiring the use of your hands for balancing. This hike turned out to be much easier than I was expecting.

Synopsis
Golden Gate was my favorite of the 3 peaks. It was a more interesting hike than the other 2, and the views were nicer.

Distance and elevation gain for the 3 summits is below. Stats above are the sum of the 3.

Suizo: 3.7 miles with 856 feet of AEG
Jeffords: 4.5 miles with 1,257 feet of AEG
Golden Gate: 2.7 miles with 1,354 feet of AEG

water 1 out of 5water 2 out of 5water 3 out of 5water 4 out of 5 Suizo Well 76-100% full 76-100% full
There was a steady stream of water from the windmill, and the tank was about full.

This one has been on my list a little while now, as I’ve been working on a Top 40 Tucson area peaks list. Today was ideal weather to take a partial day to go out to Rail X and bag this peak. Went with a friend who got off work early today.

Followed the double track amd them the wash up the north edge of the mine and then up to Jeffords. There is a very interesting hill just beyond the mine you walk around with several lines of rock jutting out of it, from one side to the other.

Lots of spotty burn from this summer’s fire out there, cleared out a lot of the grasses mostly, all the way up to the top of Jeffords.

Nice peak, enjoyed the 360 perspective from up there. Surprised to see the stick still sticking out of the rocks, as described in the trip description. Register was an empty Jif bottle hidden under some rocks next to the stick. Surprised to see some old loose pages still in there signed in 2002.

Decided to hike down the ridgeline to the northeast.

I'll make an official guide a little later and go into greater detail.

Scratched this one off the list, Jeffords Peak is the highpoint of the Tortolita Mountains. Unlike the bulk of the trails in the range that are approached from the west side near the Ritz Carlton, this peak is reached from the east. No trails on this one, pretty much all bushwhacking. My personal opinion is that if I ever make it out here again I will be surprised. It's an underwhelming peak, nothing particularly aesthetic about it and only the route finding gets your attention. The only reason to head out here is to check a range highpoint off
your to-do list.

The route does go right through most of the burn scar and it doesn't look that bad. My guess is in a year or two it will be tough to tell there was a fire here.

No animals to speak of other than some free range cattle.
