I had hiked this on my birthday, March 23, and I struggled. Since then I've been riding my bike all over Round Valley, up and down hills. This time it was MUCH easier. I almost felt like my old self. No aches or pains, just a surprise heel blister (due to dust/sand getting in. I need to wear my gaiters.) I'm going to try to do this at least once a week, and when I feel up to it (and can get away long enough) I will head for Escudilla.

As I was starting up the trail, several Forest Service vehicles arrived. All the guys wearing fire turnout clothes. They told me they'd be doing a training hike. They did catch up with me. They were carrying big chainsaws and a variety of those tools (Googling now) Pulaskis and McCleods. And one guy had a 3 gallon jerry can of water hooked into his Pulaski, over his shoulder. He was the one who trailed behind the rest! Doing penance for something?

It looks as though it was a pretty good piñon nut season this year. The ones I found on the ground were dried-up, though. Despite recent rain, it's still very dry around here.

I'm a full-time caregiver for a family member, and even being away only 2 hours, he needed help while I was gone, and called me on the phone. So, I'll have to ask his friend to look in on him if I go to Escudilla. It is hard to be focused on personal goals, but I try.

I'm back in my old stomping grounds, Eagar, Arizona. It's my birthday, and I decided to go for a little hike. It was my first time up this hill since 2013.

It's very drab and dry in the area. There were big flocks of ravens flying around, making noise.

I am pretty out of shape, so it took me a long time to get up to the rim. I opted to not go to the actual summit, which entails walking across the flat ground on the top. There used to be a register. I wonder if it's still there?

A new much larger parking area has been created at the trailhead. Looking at the ground along the trail I could see that most people go on foot, but several had been on bikes, and some on horseback. I'm not a good tracker, so I don't know how old the tracks were. It's the local workout hill.

The view is nice, the two towns of Eagar and Springerville spread below. The giant high school Dome, for football, etc., is no longer pink, which surprised me. It's now white. It was designed by the same architects who designed the one at NAU. For such a small, remote town to have such a facility is very unusual. The money came from the nearby Tucson Electric Power company. There were some shenanigans involved, of course. I don't remember the details. The problem the school district has now is maintaining the thing--very expensive. They host many indoor sporting and entertainment events there. Car shows, pow wows, you name it. A big hill on the horizon is Greens Peak, over 10,000 feet. Escudilla Mountain can be seen from one section of trail.

There are some connector trails, such as Robinson Hollow, that will take you around to Murray Basin.

I saw no one, which suited me just fine.

Wow, looks like Ireland out there! And so many flowers! Hard to believe it's the same hike, which is usually so drab. It rained a little bit but I had my Big Green Poncho.

Sure is green now, but it always seems to last only about 5 minutes. Just FYI, wildflower season in the White Mountains happens just about the time people are done with their trips up here. It'll start later in August, and last through September. The grasslands in particular can be spectacular. I didn't see a lot of flowers today--everything is just starting up.

I hiked this trail this morning to test out my new GPS. The HAZ Powers That Be are helping me with figuring out how to upload tracks, etc.

I started hiking at 5 a.m.

The Robinson Hollow Trail was built in 2000 to form a loop with the Flat Top Trail. Access is from the 12th Street Flat Top trailhead.

I worked with a group a full day in June 2000 as a trail volunteer to help build a few hundred feet of it. It took me half a bottle of ibuprofen to get through that day, and since then I have never once touched a Pulaski or a McLeod! However I have never forgotten which section I helped with! No more trail work for me, thank you. I couldn't stand up straight for a week.

The trail itself goes about 2.5 miles before it reaches a t-intersection. Go left, you'll hit the Flat Top Trail and can loop back to the car. Go right and you'll get to Murray Basin.

It was designed and laid out by a mountain biker (a USFS employee) for serious mountain bikers.

It is generally very dry and brown, until August. It's really pretty for about one month of the year. The rest of the time, it's handy for exercise, if you happen to live 5 minutes from it, which I do.

On older topo maps it is called Robertson Hollow, but the newer one (My Topo) shows it as Robinson Hollow. Who knows...?

It was 2 degrees in my front yard when I left to go on this hike. That's not a typo. TWO DEGREES. I was supposed to meet my friend at the TH at 7:30 a.m. but he wussed-out! I was fine, but my face felt like it was getting frost-nipped at first. Then the sun started coming up and the temperature rose quite a bit.

It's very, very dry and we didn't really get any precip from the "storm." I saw a dusting of snow up on the hillsides, and on the north side of Escudilla yesterday, but nothing to write home about.

Finally got myself out for a hike! I have been working so much, haven't had time. However, I now have only 2 jobs instead of 3, so I will have some time to hike and bike. The weather is cool but nice, in the 50's.

Starting at the 12th St. trailhead, I hiked up the trail, then across the flat top, to the "peak" and signed both hiker registers. Then back down and around the Robinson Hollow Trail. Very dry in this area, as usual.

I'll post photos later on.

My first hike up this hill in quite awhile. My triplogs say that the last time was in Dec. last year. I'm pretty sure I've hiked it since then, but forgot to post it.

It was surprisingly warm although I still wore a fleece shirt and long pants. Not windy, just sunny and balmy.

Just a quick hike, carrying my overnight backpack with 24 pounds in it. Very nice day, great view of Round Valley (Eagar and Springerville) as usual. Makes me glad I live here. It is truly a special place, a tiny town in the middle of nowhere!
