Completed three separate hikes in isolated NW Arizona today.

1. Banging It Out (black).
Making up is half the fun after the hairball two hour drive from Mesquite, NV through Lime Kiln Canyon and then north on BLM 1004. The final section of road to the trailhead adds insult to injury by pinstriping your vehicle. I would have preferred to climb on top of (a) Virgin Peak instead, but this quicky was better logistically. The area reminded me of the Grand Canyon's Powell Plateau area. It was also a fairly easy, straightforward route with a satisfying payoff.

2. Black Rock Mountain 7368-T (red).
Further along FR 1004 east of Elbow Canyon and also in the Paiute Wilderness. On the south side, there's an old, nearly indescernable road that becomes a game trail and crosses a clearing. After this meadow, there are zigzagging elk trails below juniper, oak and ponderosa that ascend the hillside. The final push was through snow drifts and mostly non-spiny plants (some locust). Near the top, I had to gap a fence to reach the reddish-black lava rock summit. Better views than expected, especially of the Virgin Mountains to the southwest and the Pine Valley Mountain Wilderness north of St. George. :)

3. Mokaac Trail (yellow)
First I completed the multiuse middle section out and back from the main signed trailhead along BLM 1069. The south part of this trail system is a more obscure loop that crosses the road on its south side where there's another parking area. I did this loop CCW, adding a side trip to Quail Spring. Descended the final east side steep part at dusk, occasionally looking at my six for stalking lions. :scared:

Day 2
Today started with a rough 4x4 trail to get to the Mount Bangs Trailhead. Coming from the West(Scenic, AZ,) you will need a high clearance vehicle. I did explore the roads to the Southeast, after the hike, and they didn't seam as rough. Its just a longer drive. I started the hike around 5:30am. The sun was just coming out. With out any shade on this trail, I was fortunate to have cloud cover for 98% of this hike. Once I gained some elevation, I was able to see some monsoon storms from almost every direction. It did sprinkle a couple times on the way down the mountain. Overall it was a great morning hike. After the hike, I explored some of the roads in the area. I then headed back to the campsite to wait for a couple friends. When they finally showed up, we continued the trip. We headed to an old house, then toward Grand Gulch Canyon. It sprinkled the whole way there. It was nice to keep the dust down, but the wet roads did dirty up the trucks. Grand Gulch Canyon was the unknown part of my last trip in the area. We did turn around last time on this trail. This time we where ready. Half way through the canyon we decided to make camp.

Mount Bangs has been a hike that I have been wanting to do, and the stars finally aligned just right.

We spent the night in St. George, Utah the night before, and we got back to St. George early enough after hiking Bangs to go hike the Yellow Knolls Trail in the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, on the outskirts of St. George.

Mount Bangs
Getting to Mount Bangs involved driving about 45 miles on dirt roads. These BLM roads were in good condition -- we were driving 40-60 mph on the first of two roads that we were on, Road 1069. The next road -- Road 1004 -- was also in good condition most of the way. The road got a little rougher about 3 miles from the TH, and we decided to park my buddy's CRV about 1.25 miles from the TH; so the extra road walking added 2.5 miles RT and just over 400 feet of elevation gain to the hike.

The scenery was nice on the drive in, especially on a lush, green plateau a few miles from the TH.

The trail up to the summit had nice views and was nice to hike on up to about 1/4 or so from the summit. There was some legitimate class 3 rock and boulder scrambling once you got to the summit block, where you had to go up and across some boulders to get to the summit. There was a tad bit of exposure, but nothing really problematic as long as you stayed focused on what you were doing. There were nice 360 degree views at the summit, which I enjoyed. I saw the benchmark disk, one reference mark, some height of light remnants, and a summit register log while at the summit.

This is a great hike if you like a remote hike with some solitude, as long as you don't mind a bit of rock and boulder scrambling.

Yellow Knolls
The Yellow Knolls Trail is a nice short hike in a pretty patch of desert. There is some interesting geology, and there were a fair number of wildflowers blooming. The "knolls" provide a good example of jointing in Navajo sandstone, similar to Checkerboard Mesa in Zion. In fact, I'd call this area "Zion-lite". The trail is 2 miles each way, and there are plenty of opportunities to get off the trail and climb on the many slick rocks adjacent to the trail.

This is an easy hike, and it would be a good one to take some kids on -- however, it is fun for adults also!

Distance and elevation gain for the two hikes are below. Stats above are the sum of the two.

Mount Bangs: 8.0 miles with 2,234 feet of AEG
Yellow Knolls: 4.1 miles with 515 feet of AEG

There were several wildflowers on the Mount Bangs hike, and quite a few wildflowers on the Yellow Knolls hike.
