Brunch ride today. Started in FINS, took Maricopa Trail/Lum Wash over to Pirate trails. Jumped on Park Ave to Tortuga Island, Scurvy Spine, Bootlegger, Jolly Roger, Doubloon, Park Ave to the EMRP Iron Ranger. Stopped to chat with Aaron on his Specialized Turbo Levo. Took the Connector down to GNODS. Did a lap and a half around the hills on Big Kahuna. Then back home through the neighborhoods.

Went out wandering around on the gravel bike this morning. Hit the desert 2 track south of Estrella Mountain Ranch. Worked my way over to Maricopa trail (Westar to Pirates). Then Corgett Wash to Mulligan. Up Westar Hill (road not trail) to FINS Entrance. There was a bobcat waiting for me just off the sidewalk. It hung around and let me take a few photos. Took the easy way back to Horizon along the powerline.

Couldn't decide if I wanted to do a gravel bike or mountain bike ride this morning, so I settled on a easy MTB ride since that bike was already queued up in the bike stand. Out of the garage and across the street to FINS, then Maricopa trail over to Pirate trails. Got distracted with chasing the sunrise for a photo and turned off east onto a 2 track road. It was nice enough so I decided to continue, until it turned into a sandbox and then I was wishing I hadn't, but eventually dumped out on Fenceline trail. Took that north to the Iron Ranger on Park Ave and headed west. Passed a group of 6 hikers that were heading toward the Iron Ranger. Jumped on Doubloon to Bootlegger, Scurvy Spine, over to Corgett Wash. Hung a left on Mulligan, up over Westar Hill, back to FINS on Lum Wash. Screwed around a bit in FINS and then back home. Saw 4 bikers in FINS, 6 hikers in Pirate, 1 guy on Mulligan. Mornings are getting busy. Nice to see others out and about.

WOW, it was really hot this morning. Started in FINS, rode over to Estrella Foothills HS, Park Ave, Rum Runner, Bootlegger, Pirates Cove, Hook Up, Beam Me Up, Beam Me Down, Buccaneer, Saddle Up, Cottonwood, Marketplace, D-Votion, Corgett Wash, Mulligan, Westar Hill, Lum Wash, back to FINS.

the last segment of the Maricopa Trail was recently completed and the maps are updated on their website. the farthest west segment is 19 miles. I think there must be some alternate parking areas along the way there. The weather is too hot now for me to even think about attempting a longer hike. But from Westar Drive the trail heads east to Estrella Mountain park, and is just under 5 miles one way. That looked doable.

At Westar Drive there is a trailhead for another trail system called the Fantasy Island Northern Singletrack (FINS). I parked there and quickly found an MT trail marker and followed it. The first mile goes through a subdivision in typical MT urban hiking fashion. then it follows some sections of dirt roads, alternating with sections of singletrack connecting them until the final 2 mile segment of singletrack that connects to the Crossover Trail in Estrella Park. This last segment is the best part of the trail, and it's pretty bland. The views of Estrella Mountain are nice, as well as the faraway views to the south and west. Not much else to see, but it took care of my near pathological need to always hike a new trail.

the heat was kicking in pretty good today. Felt pretty drained when I was done. the AC felt much better and with yardwork later in the day, I spent most of the day hydrating.
