I made it back to the Bitterroots yesterday. I set up my first camp for this trip in the southern Bitterroots, just outside of Darby, after relaxing around camp and recovering some from the long drive, I made the short trip to the Baker Lake Trailhead to stretch our legs.

A handful of deadfall on the trail, but nothing overly impeding and overall the trail was in great shape. I assume the deadfall will not last long on this trail, due to its popularity. I passed one group on the way in and a large group was camped at the lake. The views along the trail and the lake were as scenic as I had remembered. After a quick dip at the lake for Dot, we returned the way we hiked in.

It’s good to be back in the Bitterroots.

Baker Lake was short, but sweet. A little bit of a workout getting up to the lake, but the trail was well maintained and in great shape. The lake is quite the little gem. Its nestled in a basin with Trapper Peak as a backdrop and it’s very scenic for its size and ease of access. We got an early start to beat the crowds and returned the way we came. My guidebook for the area suggests the lakes gets high use. Baker Lake is also the starting point for a mountaineering route up Trapper Peak.
