This, a safe & successful exploratory, route finding hike to access down into ECC Canyon Drainage via this ancient stacked rock path (from Oregon Hiker & my May'15- :next: [ photo ] & [ photo ] ) and explore up and down the canyon drainage viewing for pics some most interesting alcove areas within the rugged cliffs above was the high priority hike for my five day camping trip to this area.

I was successful and survived it without any mishaps :) and was totally intrigued by the rugged cliffs scenery that abounds within the short distance up and down canyon that I was able to cover. The difficult part will be finding a way to safely access for a closer view some of this interesting "scenery". I was also amazed as it appeared to me that no human had been on this ancient rock route in eons..I did not even see any animal (deer or elk) signs of trying to negotiate this route down or back up to rim top. I did see a few deer prints up & down the canyon drainage, but not many. On the ancient rock path, there were numerous large groupings of prickle pear cactus that I needed to move out of the route path in order to continue..this just reconfirms to me that I was the first one down and back up this route in a long time.

My only regret is that those previously invited who had other unexpected plans come up were not able to join me and share in this highlight day :( A return visit will now be necessary!! :)
(some posted pics to follow in a ~few days)

This third day (with threatening rain storms) of my five day Camp Grasshopper-East Clear Creek stay, I drove a few miles from camp to explore an old 1900's Ranching Homestead interestingly named with a carved plaque by the front door, a still standing three room cabin, fireplace, a partially collapsed food storage annex, & some most interesting outside area history.

This old homestead also bordered close to an upper, scenic "rim view" area of East Clear Creek Canyon
(pics to document it all will follow in a ~few days) ;)

I'm sure that the history of this "old-historic" ? 1800's - 1900's ? Pack Route which enters East Clear Creek Canyon from the West side via Trail #45 (the Coconino NF side) and from the East side via Trail #623 (the Sitgreaves NF side), would be interesting to read about, but I unfortunately have just not taken the time to research it.. but I bet it's out there.

In May'15 Oregon Hiker and I hiked the west side down (Trail #45) to East Clear Creek Drainage and explored the immediate area. There was a lot of water in ECC drainage during this visit so our exploring progress up and down the canyon was limited unless we were willing to swim a little and we were not. We were both intrigued by the possible Trail #623 Sitgreaves NF- East side route but we did not have time on our May'15 visit to scout it out to see if it was for real. Later I was unable to confirm on the Sitgreaves NF website and their Forest Map that it even still existed..

So, for my 10/14 to 10/18/15 Camp Grasshopper visit, this hike was high on my priority list. The problem was that it was a fairly long way from where I was actually camping and the secondary dirt roads for access, especially 6.25ml one way FR63B was a pain in the :pk: to drive being required 4WD, very rocky, rough, and slow for my to be "in & out" hike of only 1.5 miles. Maybe it was best that this first day's hike was mostly driving and less hiking since viewing my profile, I actually had not done/posted another hike on HAZ since June 2, 2015 :oops: . Out of state family visit priorities and some recent surgery with a longer waiting & recovery period than anticipated is my excuse.

Now that we have confirmed that these two West and East Side trails really do exist and have now documented them here on HAZ, it would be an interesting trip for others to hopefully consider hiking both trails with some time to explore up and down this very scenic & remote East Clear Creek Canyon drainage area.. probably mid-May again would be my recommendation and driving in via the Coconino NF West side (Trail #45 TH Start).

1st trip
This originally planned 6 day/5 night Camp G/H vehicle camping and hike exploration trip to the Sitgreaves NF (ECC Canyon- East side) was originally conceived back in May'15 when Oregon Hiker and I did a first time visit to a remote, less visited section of East Clear Creek Canyon (on the Coconino NF- West side).. see [ description ]

Originally there were ~five of us who were considering this trip to the Sitgreaves NF (ECC Canyon- East side), but as sometimes happens, other plans including some very unstable weather conditions for this trip period caused me to be the only one fully committed and even I needed to exit one day early (after five days) due to so much wetness at my to presently remain obscure 6250ft location campsite.

I do believe that this ECC section and campsite area was probably the most remote that I have ever camped in AZ to date.. I did not see another vehicle or person the whole five days I was exploring this immediate area.. but strangely enough I did have Verizon texting capability on my smartphone which allowed me to communicate some and came in very handy when needing HAZ-ssk44 (Eric) to feed me the latest NWS Area Forecasts :)

This is an area of East Clear Creek Canyon that one does not want to risk being alone, injured in or disappearing in, so me being alone and somewhat unfamiliar with the area other than what I had previously viewed/drawn via HAZ-MapDEX/Route Mgr and had downloaded in my GPSr, I needed to be extra careful and was. I had three important exploratory hikes on my agenda that I really wanted to accomplish this trip and I did so within my first three full days:

..Hamilton Crossing Trail #623 - Sitgreaves NF;
..Explore an old 1900's Ranching Homestead with a still standing three room cabin & interesting outside history;
..Hike Explore down/up an ancient Indian Rock Route/Path?? or Ranching Route?? down to ECC Canyon, then explore some in both directions within the ECC Canyon Drainage; (From our May'15- :next: [ photo ] & [ photo ] )

Another overall interesting, successful, and rewarding adventure to a new area for me with another to be planned exploratory visit fully justified. Also, a bunch of rough, rocky, Grasshopper driving miles to & from.
