Returned to Ventana Peak for some relaxed hiking, pottery gazing, and quiet. This was originally planned for the 24th, but Mike's injured ankle meant we were not doing Bruce Mt today, and the weather might be bad next weekend, so we went today. I did visit the arch, this time.

I didn't bring my camera as I saw no need figuring my photos would be the same as last year. Well, don't you know on the drive out we saw 6 of the Caracara birds.

Interesting area though not sure we found the right parking spot, as we ended up on a road that looks like it’s mostly for farm access. Vehicle was still there when we returned and no tickets so it all worked out okay. Lots of foxtails in shoes for everything that was not on the atv road and many, many arrows all over the place at the top. We climbed one incorrect route but quickly saw the way around. It was probably a little too warm for my liking but we made it to the summit. We didn’t have time to go to the arch on the way out as we were headed to Tucson for a housewarming party.

I decided to head down toward Tucson bag my first peak of the year, the Sawtooth Mountains Highpoint. We also checked the nice arch that is a couple of hundred feet below the summit.

This is a tale of two hikes: there is about 2.5 miles each way of easy hiking on the desert floor, along with about 2.5 miles total of rock scrambling getting to and from the summit. A lot of the scrambling was class 2 or class 2+, with an ever so slight bit of exposure right at the top.

We mostly followed the route in the guide for this hike. Once we started ascending from the desert floor, we made our way to a saddle that is south of the arch and the peak. Some moron had spray painted some arrows that allegedly pointed the way, but we totally ignored those. I sure would not recommend following them, unless you enjoy exposed climbing on questionable rock.

We followed the GPS track for the hike, and located a large saguaro that is down below a gully that goes up to the arch. We continued on to the peak and went to the arch on our way back. The route to the peak went north, then east, then south to the summit. It was a decent route, with a mix of loose rock and solid rock to hike/climb on. I felt like the climbing was mostly class 2, with perhaps a bit of class 2+. The final climb to the summit was an awkward 5-6 foot climb up, but wasn't too bad. There were some nice views at the summit so we hung out there a bit.

We descended the same way that we came up, except that we went up the gully to the arch. The gully was somewhat steep with some loose rock and a fair amount of brush. I thought that going to the arch was almost more onerous than going to the peak; but we made it up there. The arch was cool, so I am glad that we took the time to get up there.

After descending the gully from the arch, we continued to the saddle that we hiked to earlier, and then descended back down to the desert floor and then back to our parking spot.

This hike won't make my top 10 list, but it was an enjoyable hike to do nonetheless.

High point of the Saw Tooth Mountains at 2630' with Brian and Mike. Real nice day. Lots of pottery, an arrow straightener, and possibly a grinding stone. Merry Christmas.

Went with Brian and Jim to hike Ventana peak for the second time. There are some arrows painted in white that lead to a difficult and potentially dangerous climbing area. We decided to follow the arrows for the first section, then we walked West toward a large saddle. From there we went East toward the window or natural arch. We decided to summit and then stop to see the arch on the way down. The summit is only about 200 feet as the crow flies from the natural arch, but getting from the arch to the peak isn't so straight-forward. The easiest way from the arch is to hike West down the slope until you get to a large cactus. Then you will see a way to climb up going North and East. You will spiral your way to the top from here. Some sections will require some basic climbing. At the top there was a large ammo box with a few names. Brian summited in Feb 2022, and there was another 3 person group in November, and then our 3 person group today. So, this peak only gets a few hikers per year. It was a great adventure and we all love the peacefulness of this area. We did unfortunately see evidence of border crossers. A lot of cans were left behind and a lot of trash. Not sure how recent any of it is though.
