After hitting up Saddle Mtn, I was exhausted, but I was meeting others who were not at our meeting spot yet, so I decided to add a couple of miles to my day with the side bonus of it being the only place to get a cell signal within half an hour's drive.

The AZT trailhead at 610 has some nice new fencing, and lots of logs still laying around. Sadly, there is nowhere to park here in the shade, so I left my truck in the sun for my trip to the tower. This 1 mile stretch of the AZT crosses the NPS boundary and climbs a flat draw to the tower access road. From here I left the trail and followed the road in the opposite direction to the old tower.

It was built in 1928 on Bright Angel Point and moved to the current 9,165-foot location in 1933, adjacent to an old cabin that is now in disrepair. It's a bit sad that the park service doesn't have the will or resources to maintain these historic structures.

The tower is 75-feet high with a 7x7 cab on top, which was not locked. Edward Abbey spent many years in this tower in the late 60s and early 70s (before, during, or after his years in Aztec Peak? ... did he man any other AZ fire towers?)

I spent a few minutes in the tower, posting some instafacechat things and leaving messages for the various people I was attempting to meet up with before heading back down to the AZT and my truck and a well-earned nap!
