Got started under mostly sunny skies, but I had a feeling all the sun would kick up some early storms. Headed uphill on a nice trail. The aspens were just starting to change color, should be good in another couple weeks. Views were limited for the first couple miles, then started to open up. Sure enough, by around 0900, clouds were starting to build.
I liked the talus fields along the upper part of the trail and took a break there just before the steepest part of the hike started. The trail had ice above 11400’ which slowed progress slightly. Finally reaching the saddle was a relief. I looked around for a moment and talked to a hunter camped on the south side of the saddle. Had the clouds not been looming, I would have walked northeast along the Divide just to get some more views. Instead, I retraced my steps back downhill.
Easy hike back down, saw two other hikers along the way. Saw one coyote, and lots of evidence of deer and elk. Pleasant hike with some nice views up top, plus it’s easy access for any vehicle. Finished about 10 minutes before the rain started. It rained all afternoon and night, snowing up higher, which made for quite a drive from Lake City to Pueblo the following day. |
