Lookout Mtn has been on Kelly’s wishlist, so we made sure to get this one done. Some overgrown vegetation on the hike up to Lookout Lake, then the trail clears after the lake. A bee stung me on the calf. There were plenty of huckleberries still available for picking. The trail gets progressively steeper and rockier in the second half. Getting to the summit is a relief. Spectacular views in all directions. We checked out the tower and building, then had lunch on some boulders at the edge of the cirque.

Harlow pretty much dragged me back downhill. We took a slightly different route down the second half of the descent, which skips the lake, but has more views. Didn’t see any other hikers. Always a good summit!

Kelly had been craving some time in the Selkirks, so Linda put together this track to appease her.

The drive to the trailhead can get a bit tedious thanks to the moguls cut into the dirt road for drainage.

It helps to have a GPS track for this hike since the trailhead is somewhat hidden by foliage. Once you’re on the trail, though, it’s easy to follow all the way to the summit. Gorgeous scenery, ripe huckleberries, Lookout Lake, and perfect weather made the climb especially memorable. The final half mile along the old lookout road, now covered in loose talus, was slow going.

At the top, the remnants of the old lookout—a platform alongside the former quarters—dot the summit. From there, the views down to Lookout Lake and across the rugged surrounding landscape were stark and breathtaking.

On the descent, we varied our route slightly, enjoying more huckleberries along the way before finding our way back to the vehicle.

i've always liked linda's photos of the selkirks, so lookout mountain was today's choice
longer drive to the trailhead, especially on the forest service road drainage moguls
harlow got to come along :)
we got going around 0930
first part of the trail was steep and overgrown, with spiderwebs
didn't last long, and the terrain opened up a bit
we stopped at lookout lake for a few minutes, then continued on
good views to the south as we got higher, with priest lake visible
the last push to the summit is on an old roadbed
great scenery from the top of the surrounding selkirk mountains with lookout lake below
linda pointed out several landmarks
granite cirques and peaks that remind me of the sierra nevada
bruce and i went up on the tower
harlow did not want linda going up without her so not this time
the old lookout cabin is in good condition and worth a peek inside
we took a long break and just enjoyed being on the summit
retraced some of our steps, then took a different trail and eventually a road that offered good views to the west
this was a great hike, probably my favorite, leading to a desire to see more of the selkirk mountains

Opted for Lookout Lake & Mtn with Wyatt and the dog. It’s a long drive, 100 miles and 2.5 hrs from the house, but has a lot of fall color. The final 3-4 miles to the trailhead requires medium clearance since they created humps in the road every couple hundred feet. Annoying. If it weren’t for those humps, almost any vehicle could reach the trailhead.

Wyatt claimed he was carsick, so he made us hike kind of slow. I think he was being dramatic. The trail is overgrown up to the lake, but clear after that. Not much of a lake, but there are a few campsites around it.

Once we got around to the south side of the peak, the trail got steeper and rockier. Despite the cool temps, it felt pretty warm in the full sun. As expected, great views of the Selkirks from the summit. Took a break at the summit, then headed back down, taking a slightly different route on the road for the final mile or so. Has nice views.

Long, but pretty, drive to get to this hike. Lots of fall color. The final few miles of the road had some annoying dips & humps constructed every couple hundred feet. I know it is to direct water runoff, but they seemed a little extreme.

As for the hike, uphill through dense vegetation right off the bat. Trail was easy to follow though. No views until I reached the lake, then I could see the lookout perched high above. Saw some moose tracks, but nothing else.

More hiking through the trees after the lake. The turn in the trail where it meets the road was a little confusing. Didn’t quite match up with what I had read during my research. Took a moment to make sure I was headed the right direction. After that, the trail was easy to follow.

The higher I climbed, the steeper it got, but the views kept getting better and better. Great 360 degree views from the summit. Looked at the cabin and tower, rested for a moment, then headed back down.

Once back at the confusing turn, I wanted to take the road back to the truck. Again, a moment of trial and error, before deciding a trail heading south (opposite direction of what I expected) was the right one. Sure enough, it veered northwest and hit the road before too long. The road had nice views and it was a quick walk back to my truck.

Despite the relatively short hike vs long drive, this was a great hike. Temps around 50 all day, mix of clouds and sun. Didn’t see anybody else.
