Arrived at this hike with Brian and Jim, starting around 10 am. Although we could have driven up the road closer to the peak, we decided to park further away and walk part of the road because we all wanted to get about 6 or more miles in. Starting off we followed the road going toward the saddle Southeast of Mt Bruce. From there we picked up a well marked trail that was steep and took us to the bottom of the cliffs on the Southwest side of Mt Bruce. Up there at the base of the cliffs we met a few rope climbers. We continued hiking North along the trail which followed along the base of the cliffs. When we got around to the North end we searched extensively for a plaque that we learned about but could not find anything. Perhaps the plaque was moved to a different location, or it could have a victim of mother nature.
We continued following the cairned trail up the North side of the peak and made it there after seeing a few false summits. At the top, there were a huge rock enclosure that was at least 4 feet high. We also found a registry inside which we signed. We had our lunch and spent about 1.5 hours on the peak. We took a few temperature readings and noticed it was about 45 degrees. Knowing there were cliffs all around us, we decided to head back down the way we came. We searched again for the plaque but came up empty. Next, we circled around the East side of the peak by following trails around which were not in as good shape as the trails on the West side of the mountain. We did have to drop down quite a distance to get around the rocky East face. Eventually we made it to saddle Southeast of Mt Bruce. We saw a pretty good route going up to North West Dome so we hiked up, following animal trails for quite some distance. Higher up, it got quite rocky and we were able to keep heading up and made it to the rocky ridgeline. There were areas of cat's claw vine that we needed to dodge on the way to the summit. At the top, there was a metal pole that was also marked as some kind of weather station. From the summit, we headed East down a steep slope to get to a flatter area, then we headed Southwest and down one of the ridgelines to get to the bottom. Near the bottom we saw an open water tank and a large storage container. There was also a dirt road here which we used to get back to where we parked.
Stats:
------
Distance (round trip) = 6.2 miles
AEG = 2,150 feet
Strava moving time = 2 hrs 42 mins
Strava elapsed time = 6 hrs 59 mins (we took a lot of breaks) |
