This hike was to the summit of Bear Mountain (elevation of 8,036 feet and prominence of 1,476 feet), which is in the Gila National Forest near the town of Silver City in southwest New Mexico.

I was travelling into New Mexico and decided to stop along the way and hike up to this peak.

This hike is short and steep: it is about 1 mile each way and you gain about 1,100 feet in elevation on the way up, and lose the elevation on the way back down.

The hike is on a maintained, easy-to-follow trail. There is no signage at the trailhead or at the parking area, so you have to know where it is.

The trail is forested which limits views on the hike. There are some nice views off to the north and to the east at the summit though.

I did not see any survey markers at the summit.
