| no partners | | Opted for Bernard Peak again today, but the actual trail this time. I had figured out two starting points and chose the one that was A: free, and B: no restriction on the start/end time. Got started around 0700 to temps around 60 degrees. Quick walk up the dirt road, which is on private property, owned by a lumber company. Most turns were well marked. Got to one fork that wasn't as well marked, but I knew the viewpoint over the lake was to the north, so I took that side.
Nice little viewpoint, some smoky haze from fires in WA. I could see Cape Horn Peak across the water, which I hiked a couple of weeks ago, kind of neat to see both peaks from opposite sides of the bay. After that, I stayed on the trail that skirts the cliff edge and has more lake views. It has some steep/rocky spots. Made my way over to where Scout Trail transitions into Bernard Peak trail on natl forest land.
Bernard Peak trail was quite nice. Clearly defined, moderate grade, good condition, and recently cleared of most brush except for one section in the middle. Nothing exciting about the trail, but pleasant hiking. Long switchbacks up the side of the mountain. A few drainages had running water, which I'd guess some are pretty reliable. One corner of a switchback around the 5 mile mark had a little point with some really good views. Didn't see much besides some turkeys and grouse.
Nearing the top, the trail crossed the road, then steeply climbed to the summit. This was really the only steep or rocky part of the hike. There was a large family camping up top, vehicles and tents everywhere. Since their dogs were annoying, and I was just at the summit yesterday, I said hello and kept moving. Curved around on the road to avoid going back thru their camp, and breezed down the trail.
Once back down in the Scout Trail area, on the private property, I stayed on the more direct route back and avoided the trail along the cliff edge. It was getting warm at this point and the final two miles were a little toasty with no wind. 90 degrees at the finish. Didn't see anyone besides the campers up top. Since this is so close to my house (20-25 min drive) and a good workout, I'll probably add this one to the yearly rotation up here. |
