Opted for Bernard Peak today. Nothing exciting, but it’s a good workout with decent shade. Steady uphill for 7+ miles, trail in mostly good condition. One downed tree to climb over. Easy hike back downhill. Temps mostly in the 60s & 70s, but hitting 80 when I finished. Humid. Didn’t see anyone else.

Today was the first day of deer rifle season. Despite my dislike of the color, I wore orange when I realized that every man in the panhandle skipped work today and was out wandering around and ready to shoot anything that moved. Bernard Peak is a quick drive from my house, and a solid workout hike with good stats and a great trail.

Got started from the trailhead at the end of Twete Rd around 0900. It’s an easy hike uphill on a fairly consistent incline. Passed a few hunters in the first mile or so, while on Scout Trail. As I reached the point where Scout Trail turns into Bernard Peak trail, I passed a few deer. They were hanging out farther in than most of the hunters seemed to want to walk, lol.

All the brush has been cleared back from the trail. And any recent deadfall has been cleared too. We had a big windstorm across the region a couple of weeks ago that toppled a lot of trees, this trail being no exception, especially in the burn scar, but they must have been out there clearing them almost immediately.

Easy hike to the summit, where there were more hunters. Quick hike back downhill. Views are generally limited, but there are some nice glimpses of the lake. There were a bunch of new moose tracks on the trail that had not been there on my ascent. Passed more hunters in the final two miles. I mentioned where I had seen the deer this morning and wished them luck. Saw some grouse, but not much else.

Temps in the 50s most of the day, low 60s by the time I finished. This hike is north side of the mountain, and gets a lot of shade all day in the fall, so it felt cooler. Good option for easy mileage when I’m not wanting to drive too far.

Opted for Bernard Peak again today, but the actual trail this time. I had figured out two starting points and chose the one that was A: free, and B: no restriction on the start/end time. Got started around 0700 to temps around 60 degrees. Quick walk up the dirt road, which is on private property, owned by a lumber company. Most turns were well marked. Got to one fork that wasn't as well marked, but I knew the viewpoint over the lake was to the north, so I took that side.

Nice little viewpoint, some smoky haze from fires in WA. I could see Cape Horn Peak across the water, which I hiked a couple of weeks ago, kind of neat to see both peaks from opposite sides of the bay. After that, I stayed on the trail that skirts the cliff edge and has more lake views. It has some steep/rocky spots. Made my way over to where Scout Trail transitions into Bernard Peak trail on natl forest land.

Bernard Peak trail was quite nice. Clearly defined, moderate grade, good condition, and recently cleared of most brush except for one section in the middle. Nothing exciting about the trail, but pleasant hiking. Long switchbacks up the side of the mountain. A few drainages had running water, which I'd guess some are pretty reliable. One corner of a switchback around the 5 mile mark had a little point with some really good views. Didn't see much besides some turkeys and grouse.

Nearing the top, the trail crossed the road, then steeply climbed to the summit. This was really the only steep or rocky part of the hike. There was a large family camping up top, vehicles and tents everywhere. Since their dogs were annoying, and I was just at the summit yesterday, I said hello and kept moving. Curved around on the road to avoid going back thru their camp, and breezed down the trail.

Once back down in the Scout Trail area, on the private property, I stayed on the more direct route back and avoided the trail along the cliff edge. It was getting warm at this point and the final two miles were a little toasty with no wind. 90 degrees at the finish. Didn't see anyone besides the campers up top. Since this is so close to my house (20-25 min drive) and a good workout, I'll probably add this one to the yearly rotation up here.
