We did this hike as a shuttle hike from Hurricane River to the Au Sable Lighthouse and then to the Log Slide Trailhead. This hike covers a small portion of the North Country Trail (NCT), which is the longest National Scenic Trail in America, stretching 4,800 miles across eight states from North Dakota to New York.

From the Hurricane River Trailhead, the smooth, easy trail runs northeast, following the Lake Superior shoreline for 1.5 miles and ending at the Au Sable Lighthouse. We arrived at the lighthouse just in time for a scheduled tour including the history of the grounds and lighthouse. It’s worth the time if you’re there.

From there, we took the Log Slide Trail heading southeast. We had perfect weather that day to enjoy the views of the Log Slide Dunes and the aqua-colored Lake Superior. The views are quite spectacular. Toward the end, we could see tiny specks of people playing in the water 400 feet below. A sign at the top warned that while it might take only a short time to get to the water, it could take 1.5 hours to climb back up the steep sand.

The area gets its name from historical logging operations. Timber was cut at the top and then rolled or slid down the steep embankment to ships below, where it was transported to the mills.
