| no partners | | On a chilly morning in early January, during a freakish dry winter, I decided to revisit this trail, after at least a 13 year absence. An acquaintance of mine, a mountain biker who also was a career Forest Service employee, designed the trail and built a lot of it himself. One time, about 25 years ago, I went out there with a group of volunteers to help dig trail. My back still hurts just to think about it. Not my cup of tea.
I easily remembered the section we'd worked on as I walked along it. In fact, although I looked for a triplog before, I didn't find it until just now. It says the trail building occurred in June 2000, and I used half a bottle of ibuprofen during that day! I wasn't even 50 years old then, and now I'm almost 73. Holy schmoly, time flies. So then, fast forward to June of 2013: I had just purchased my Garmin Oregon GPS, and used it for the first time on this very loop. [ photoset ]
Although my photos show a lot of nice smooth tread, a lot of it is rocky. I tried biking it one time, but my skills weren't up for it on the rocky parts. I've always been more of a dirt road explorer on my bike, rather than doing the sketch stuff. Osteopenia makes you think twice about whether you want to be falling off your bike.
The trail links with the Flat Top Trail to form a really nice loop of almost 4 miles. Next time maybe I will hike to the rim of Flat Top first, then complete the Robinson Hollow Loop on the way back. If I have time. That's always the problem right now. I'm a full-time caregiver, and generally do short hikes these days.
This trail also links in with the Murray Basin complex.
I was surprised to see so many piñon pines. Not sure why I didn't notice that before, but back in the hollow there are more piñon pines than any other tree. They far outnumber the junipers. It must have been a favorite place for the ancient dwellers of this land to gather the nuts in the fall. |
