The scramble down is doable without ropes. Some exposure but okay for the experienced hiker. The canyon is a maze of obstacles to find an acceptable passage through. Placed a second car at the end to avoid the road walk. This is much more than a normal hike. Rather this is a fun scramble route for those interested in route finding, tunnels, boulders, crawls, butt slides, use of hands, ...

I missed out on chasing waterfalls from the recent rains (other commitments), but there is still plenty of water in the Supes for an enjoyable explore in the drainages.

I had read about this canyoneering route, but was hiking solo, so I decided to "reverse canyoneer" the route and see how far I could get. As it turned out, all the way :D But it was touch and go in a few spots.

The drop in from the bottom is steep and rocky. At the base, the dual culverts were doing their job, funneling the flow from the two joining creekbeds.

With temps in the low/mid 30's, the start was nippy but not too uncomfortable.

The first couple of miles are rather pedestrian. The only thing of note is the remnant of an old dam or something similar structure. [It's the remnants of the old wagon-trail bridge. See comment below].

I was about to resign myself to a comparatively lackluster hike, but at the 1.8 mile mark, where an unnamed drainage joins in (marked on my route), the canyon narrows and the scenery improves greatly!

Shortly after that point, I had to commit to getting wet to go further. But, given that it is January, my commitment was limited to mid-thigh!

From that point, there are three major boulder obstacles to overcome--each of which fills the canyon from wall to wall with house-sized boulders (all marked on my route). The first has a very cool rabbit-hole and lengthy bypass; the second has a partial rabbit-hole bypass, and on the other end of it lies the skeleton of an old motorcycle, sitting in the middle of the creekbed. The final boulder jam was the most challenging. I could find no way around without navigating a swimmer. I was about to give up and return the way I came, when I made one last effort to climb up and over and succeeded.

Shortly after the final boulder jam, I came to another fork, where the route veers left and quickly slots up before reaching what the official route calls a "recommended rappel." The actual rappel spot is obscured from the bottom approach and requires navigating a narrow S curve in the canyon. I couldn't see how deep the water was in the S, but decided to go for it. As it turned out, it was a swimmer, so I ended up fully committed after all.

The problem was that the "recommended rappel," while not lengthy, is not navigable from the bottom up. At this point, I was close to the top exit point, but was not sure I could get there. But with a little backtracking, I was able to scramble up above the slot. A short distance above the "recommended rappel," is the primary rappel, which on this day was fed by a nice waterfall and a thirty foot drop to a pool below.

The scramble up to the road from there was not bad.

Normally, a road walk back to the car is not an ideal hike ending, but today, it was nice to have a smooth, even surface to walk on after navigating the canyon.

All in all, this turned out to be a great choice. Looking forward to going back and canyoneering it in the downstream direction. :-)

Hoping to catch a little flow here, but alas, some pools, but pretty dry. Great temps for July though.

Found out a Group was going to be doing this Canyon and thought I would join in...A mix of Experience, some Experience and a couple that have only done a little Practice Rappelling...Seemed like a good Opportunity to get this one in.

I had been fighting some Bronchitis ever since my Utah Trip and it was much worse a day or two before, but I managed to start overcoming it just in time to go.

Nice little Canyon. Still a couple of very short Swimmers in the Rappel Section, but it was warm enough with enough Sun, I didn't bother with a Wetsuit. The Water was surprisingly warm for a Canyon...I would categorize it as "Refreshing" instead of Cold... :D I never got Chilled from being Wet, even in the Shade. We Exited in a slightly different Spot than I was expecting and it involved a small bit of Light Climbing, but on top there was a distinct Trail most of the way through the Desert almost all the way to the Vehicles. The last 100 Yards was the only Road Walk....

Very little Time for Photos...Even with the Beginners, this Group moved right along...Probably the least Amount of Photos I've taken on a Trip in 2 Years.... :sl: May go back and rehike some of the Exit Area this next Week. The Flowers and Views are incredible up top...It was all I could do to NOT stop...I could have spent an Hour just on the last Mile... :D

Fairly simple and straight forward canyon. Very pretty scenery. I would say that this is definitely a beginner canyon as long as your party is physically fit. The small rocks that make up most of the canyon floor are tiresome to hike over. Chose to do a short rappel into canyon after climbing around dry waterfall (there was water in the canyon beneath the falls, the rest of the canyon was dry). Once at the tunnel, we climbed out up the embankment on the side of the road. The rocks are very loose there, be careful!

I was pleasantly surprised with this little canyon. Mike wanted to hit it up so off we went. We left town kind of early and really didn't need to, parked off the side of the road where a crotchrocketer was zipping up and down the winding section of road. We dropped into the canyon, hit the 1st rappel, entered the narrows, got our swim on, explored the boulder field, found our way out to the warm sun, and hike on up the first moderate section we found that didn't have a 90 degree wall to go up. Pretty fun canyon to do if you are looking for a few short rappels and a few short swims.

Fun night trip through Apache Trail canyon with a great group as always. 2 easy rappels and a crazy boulder field which was extra fun to navigate in the dark. Lots of rattlesnakes, tarantulas and mystery smells (bell pepper and propane?). Finished it off with pineapple beer and laughing under the stars. My first hike since coming home from Ecuador -- felt great to be back. :)

Ben was generous enough to invite me along to yet another AHOTE beginner canyon.. I always appreciate that. Fun canyon with a great group of people. I learned to be careful where I put my hand in the dark... there is not enough sanitizer in this world... we hiked out of the canyon after two fun rappels and ended up back at the car, having a beer or two and laughing at the speed racers. One of them apparently learned his lesson on the way back.. car in a ditch -- it wasn't going to be moving on its own any time soon.. oops.

So playing in Crucifix Canyon took a little longer than I'd planned & hoped yet I still wanted to finish the day off with a quick run down Apache Trail canyon, but I'm a lil tired & need some R&R and even if I rushed into the canyon now I'd still be hiking out in the dark since the days are SO short. Hmmmm, dark....night....it's been a few months since I'd done a night canyoneering trip. : rambo : Why not?!? I've done this canyon 3-4 times already in the daytime, it's a warm evening, it also just so happens to be a full moon weekend, the nights are long & I'm camping the night so it's not like I have anything else important to do, and the best reason yet is because there's no else around to talk me out of this crazy idea. So after finished with Crucifix Canyon, I drove to a scenic ridge, relaxed in a chair while soaking in the amAZingness of this area, repacked my pack for the next canyon, heated myself up some hearty dinner, and I eventually started suiting up into my shorty wetsuit and neo socks while soaking in another beautiful sunset. :D

I drove down to the unofficial TH along the highway, and dropped into the canyon a little before 6pm and had just enough light to make it the beginning of the technical section before needing my headlamp. I didn't want to cheat this experience by bypassing the rappels and the swimmers even though that'd be quick, easier, and drier. : rambo : Geared up, turned on my bright headlamp, and built another chockstone anchor since the one from last year didn't survive and made that first 30ft rappel into a slightly chilly shoulder-high pool and waded myself out. Wow, night canyoneering is SO flipping amazing, eery, and exhilarating. :y: It's kinna like night Scuba diving but with less gear & water. After that first pool, I really didn't mind the water too much as I waded thru a few more deep pools. I hit the second rappel of like 8-10ft and made my way across that final pool before dropping the gear & wetsuit & put on some warm layers I had stuffed in my dry keg. With the short & sweet technical section behind me, I now have the boulder cave section to maneuver thru... Wow, so if you think this place is wild during the day you really should try doing it at night!!! : rambo : There at least a half dozen boulder caves and while going thru the biggest one of the bunch, I was doing a short yet exposed down climb and my handhold just blew off of the way and I fell face first a good 4-6ft but thankfully my guardian angel & quick reflexes quickly caught me and I took most of the force of the fall on my shin guards and gloves and hopped up without any scrapes or bruises though my heart was racing at least 150 bpm. :o A little ways more and I was past the boulder caves, the talls wall slowly faded to vegetated slopes, and the canyon was reduced to rock hopping... Boy is that moon bright! Too bad I left my moonglasses in the car and I might get a moonburn if I don't put some moonscreen on. :sl: A little further down canyon, I acquired the exit ridge and scrambled out of the canyon to the amazing sight of this rugged terrain light up by the moon with the glow of Phoenix off to the west. I saw some glowing eyes staring at me just above the bushes so I yelled to scare it off hoping it wasn't a mountain lion. :o Yelling did nothing, so I threw a rock at it and was thankful when it ran away and I heard the hoofs of a deer prancing away... Pulled out my iPhone & fired up the topo app and navigated back to the old Apache trail that eventually hits the paved highway and my bight & inviting car. :D

This is my third night canyoneering trip and I've thoroughly enjoyed everyone and recommend other experienced canyoneers to give a try at least once. : rambo : After two rugged canyons and 11 hours of hiking, I slept like a baby all night.

After a halfday of work, a few friends and I drove out to this gem of a canyon and catch it while it still had a nice flow from the rains last weekend. By heading out midday, we got stuck behind loads of tourists, snowbirds, and other outdoor enthusiasts but we eventually reached the TH. ;) We quickly dropped down into the narrows and they were as sweet as ever. I thought the gals were a little more experienced at rappelling then they were, but us to guys were there to help out and you can't get too hurt when both the raps are into swimmers. :) After that, we had a blast playing in the many boulder caves which personally I find more entertaining than the narrows. There is a fair amount of scrambling & down climbing required to navigate thru them, but thankfully there were no issues with my group. And after a sweet trip thru this amazing gem, we bushwhacked our way out of and back alongside the canyon while the sun was slowly getting ready to set. Which always makes for great lighting for shots of Four Peaks, Tortilla Mt, Fish Creek Peak, and all the other many peaks & canyon is the area. :D

Only had a halfday at work, so I drove out to explore this gem of a canyon on this beautiful day before the days start getting too warm again. The water wasn't flowing, so it wasn't quite as much fun as before but there's still a few swimmers & waders to go thru. :D I did the two rappels in the narrows into water without a wetsuit since it was a warm enough day and the boulder caves were as fun as ever to scramble thru...

This time I dropped in the upper South Fork of this canyon from the Tortilla TH to explore the this upper section and further explore a return route from Tortilla Creek thru this canyon country. It just so happen that this loop was also about 3 miles and 500 AEG as well... I ran into loads of bushwhacking, cactus doging, and some light down climbing but nothing technical was found... ;)

I had a few hours of daylight left and had my wetsuit with me, so I decided to drop into this gem of a canyon again but this time I'd properly descend it via that first 20ft drop into a high wader/swimmer. :o With only a full 3mm on, it didn't seem that cold... A couple more waders and you come to a 8-10ft rap into another swimmer. The creek wasn't flowing this time, but there were still plenty of pools to wade thru so I left the wetsuit on until the canyon fully opened up. There's about a half dozen sweet boulder caves after the narrows which requires loads of down climbing, wading, and extra time to soak in and enjoy. This canyon is so much fun and quick, I may have to do it again here shortly. :D

I first dropped down to the narrows to evaluate the down climb and then huffed it back to my car to retrieve my 100ft rope and traversed above the narrows and rappelled in at the confluence. I explored the narrows a bit, but there was a fair amount of water and I didn't feel like getting in above my thighs in that cold water without a wetsuit. :o It would be sweet to come back in warmer weather or a wetsuit and drop into those swimmers and do the narrows the proper way. Below the narrows were loads of shallow pools, down climbs, and boulder caves to play in. :D I managed to only get wet up to my thighs so I'm listing it as a 3A, but if it was warmer or if I had a wetsuit I would have easily been up to my shoulders in many places. The amount of water also highly depends on how recently it rained and how dry of a winter its been. I ended up staying in canyon all the way down to the old ex-bridge of the former Apache Trail and followed that old road northeast towards the paved modern version and then back to my car.

Time logged and mileage includes backtracking to my car, checking out the boulder caves, and wander briefly up some of the other canyons...
