Not quite what I had planned today. Talked it over with the wife and decided to do a short section of the passage 8. She dropped me off at Ranch Rd X9 and hiked south towards the Gabe Zimmerman TH. I didn’t check my Garmin until I reached Pistol Hill Rd, where I discovered that I had inadvertently paused my Garmin. ](*,) I feel a lost about a mile in stats. It had me reaching Pistol Hill Rd in .69 miles. I’m thinking it should have been closer to 1.69. Annoyingly, this throws off all my mileage marks for the rest of the hike.

The first 3ish miles of the hike were very nice. Rolling hills with only mild elevation changes as the trail twisted through the undulations. The trail was very smooth with minimal rocks. Around 3 miles the trail starts to work its way around a series of hills. It does a nice job of avoiding and serious elevation changes. The trail does become quite a bit rockier as it plays on the slopes and gains a modest amount of elevation. Around 4.9 I reached La Selvilla picnic area. There were bathrooms and picnic tables there, as well as some odd stone structures. This was also the beginning of the Colossal Cave Mountain Park trail system. For the next couple miles, there were multiple trail crossings with an occasional trail map posted at the junctures. It was kind of annoying because many of these trail crossings were unsigned and you had to use the maps to figure out what trail you were intersecting. All these junctures were well marked with AZ Trail signage so there was never any question which was the AZ Trail. Around 5.44 I hit road crossing (to the La Sevilla picnic area) and briefly met up with my wife. Shortly after that I came to a turn off for the El Bosquecito picnic area. Both picnic areas looked like ideal places to rest your feet and find shelter from the sun. This stretch was some of the rockier portions for this passage.

It’s always fun trying to figure out how a trail is going play with the surrounding hills. There was one mild climb as the trail finally chose a hill and headed away from La Posta Quemada Ranch. Once the trail chose a hill it was pretty obvious how it was going to tackle it…..slowly. Ideally designed for bikers or runners. Reaching the top was somewhat anticlimatic. The east side drops down noticeably to Quemada Ranch, but the west is an unimpressive slope. This saddle does afford you your first distant views of the tracks and I-10. It a very gradual and mainly unimpressive decline towards the Gabe Zimmerman TH. It did start to get nice as you approached the tracks as the trail wound along and through some washes that fed into Cienega Creek. My wife was angel and met me about .5 miles before the train tracks with an ice cold Mountain Dew. :D That’s the way to finish a trail. Since I had done the first mile of passage 8 on my last visit, we ended the hike at Frontage Road.

Nice hike, though to be honest my legs and feet were very happy that we had decided to make this an abbreviated hike. The weather was nice, but you can tell it’s warming up. Temps were in the mid 80’s with blue skies. (In three months we’ll be begging for temps like this. ). Busy day on the trail. Encountered 11 thru hikers (I think this is as many as I’ve seen in all the other passages combined). Also encountered 3 bikers and a horse rider. I forgot to mention on my hike of passage 13, there were a number of ribbons throughout the trail for an upcoming run. I was surprised to see the same ribbons on the southwest side of Mica Mountain. :o Turns out there is a major running event coming up in early April. If anyone feels like doing a casual jaunt of 309 miles, (from Picketpost to Patagonia), Destination Trails is having sign ups for next years race. (This years is sold out. Yes, people actually line up and pay for this. ). Wildlife was minimal, but awesome. Saw one Gila Monster!

This excursion was done at the back end of the AZ Trail 7 hike. Velva thought it would be nice to hike over to the RR tracks after DRIVING and meeting me a different road crossings while I HIKED 13+ miles. :-k I wasn’t overly enthused with the idea :pout: , but it is hard to pass up a hike with the wife, so off we went.

Thankfully, what we did was a pretty easy hike. From the Zimmerman TH, we followed the trail down into Davidson Canyon and over to the three bridges. Neat confluence of transportation engineering. I didn’t even realize there was a second track in the area until we got into the canyon. There was some decent sized trees and a running stream which added to the setting. The tail exits up a cool side canyon, crosses the road and then passes underneath the trellis. There is actually a metal awning underneath the track which is littered with stones. I guess thrown down by passing trains? This was good enough for both of us. We hiked back over the bridge and bike bypass trail back to the Zimmerman TH.

Neat area. Loved hiking with the wife. I do wish I had had more energy for the hike so I could have enjoyed it more. Nice thing. This is one less mile of passage 8 that I have to do. :D

We had a couple hours to kill in the morning so we chose to hike a small section of Arizona Trail #8 near La Posta Quemada Ranch. Started in Colossal Cave Mountain Park and headed South along the Arizona Trail to the Saddle Just South of Posta Quemada Ranch. No one on the trail for this first cool day in Tucson. Very dry, hope we get some rain with this storm passing through tonight and tomorrow. This is the section of the AZT that has the most ridiculous switch back system, it is 1.25 miles for getting up to a saddle that is 250 feet up. I think the trail designer should have their license revoked ( I know they are volunteers). Great bike trail if you are a mountain biker. Scenery was nice and the weather was overcast.

This was a very fine morning to hike. The trail was well maintained and we enjoyed the scenery and company. It was about 51 degrees when we started so perfect weather for hiking. The ranch can be seen from the trail. We have been down to it on another occasion and it was very interesting. It was an overcast morning today. There are some really nice looking saguaros in this area, especially on the first part of the hike. We parked near the #7 campsite near Colossal Cave. Looked like a good option for those who enjoy camping.

Went back to where were last weekend to finish off AZT8, doing the north half this time from the Loma Alta TH. Andy was able to make the trip this time. Andy and Wally both have National Park passes, so we didnt have to worry about having a pass to park at the TH. It was somewhat debatable as to whether we needed a pass or not based on how the parking lot there was right on the border of the National Park, and the fact that at the end of our hike, the majority of the cars in the full lot did not have any passes.

This was a very non-eventful hike. Mostly level, easy to follow, cool weather, cloudy skies, mellow bikers, etc. I met the trail steward for this hike at a road crossing and had a nice conversation. Wally and Andy were waiting for me at our turn around point, after lunch we headed back.

The clouds were pretty constant all day, but at times the would break through just enough to need to cover a bit to prevent sunburn. Only until the last few miles did the clouds take over and the overcast skies stayed.

Nice to get this section done easily and quickly. Looking northbound at AZT9 was very daunting, especially with no options to shorten the 27 mile one way hike. Next few hikes looking southbound to the other sections towards Mexico.

Wally and I started from the Gabe Zimmerman TH, arriving as the sun hit the horizon after a 2 hour drive in the dark. The last time we hiked from here it was 4th of July weekend. We took the AZT southbound that day and were more worried about the heat. The start today was much colder and required gloves and headgear to keep warm the first 2 miles.

The trail heads into the canyon and follows Cienega Creek for a bit before heading up a side drainage just past the train trestle, which is adorned with abundant graffiti. After that it makes a sharp left, which we missed and hiked nearly a quarter mile out of our way before we discovered it. The trail then crosses a road and goes under another train trestle that has a canopy over the trail with dozens of rocks on top of it, serving as a warning for hikers to stay under the canopy, especially if a train is passing by.

We made it out past Colossal Cave Mountain Park, almost 10 miles, and turned around. On the way back we had lunch at the La Selvilla picnic area. We also took a couple shortcuts on the way back. One was through Colossal Cave park, which maybe only saved us couple of tenths of a mile. the other was near the train tracks. During our first detour where we missed our turn, we noticed on the way back that there were older, faded AZT markers. We noticed that there a few dirt roads that led to the current alignment of the trail which was quite a bit shorter than the singletrack.

Saw roughly an equal amount of bikers and hikers, more hikers thru the park. Also 2 horse riders. On the way back there was a trail runner by himself who stopped to talk. It turns out we saw him last February when we hiked the Reavis Canyon passage north of Picketpost. He likely recognized me because I basically wear the same thing every time when I hike.

We arrived to the TH parking lot packed full of cars and people hanging out having a picnic in the pavilion. There was also a guy who had a video camera and was interviewing someone, and later was filming people as they finished up their hikes.

Short hike along the Arizona Trail between Pistol Hill Road and X9 Road. This is a portion Ginny had not done before, nothing too exciting about it though. Stormy weather made for some nice scenery, didn't get rained on though. Trail is in good condition and made for easy walking with a 2.5 MPH pace. Saw one through hiker along this stretch. Asked her about the new section of AZ trail in Gardner Canyon area, she wasn't sure what her plans were. I imagine this puts a kink in their plans if they are planning on restocking in Patagonia. Will have to do a side trip or take the old trail. We didn't see it but the through hiker warned us of a small rattle snake along the trail, didn't rattle but very aggressive, probably the cool weather or long dry spell here made it cranky. Water was stashed at the X9 road for hikers who needed it.

Started at Gabe Zimmerman TH and ran out to pistol hill TH and back. beautiful morning. felt good on the outbound and leapfrogged with some mountain bikers who had started on mexico/az border the morning before and were heading to utah.

last few miles got warm and difficult. there was some water flowing in La Cienega so i delightfully dunked it.

great to be on the AZT again :y:

We hiked Passage 8 from Gabe Zimmerman TH to X9 Ranch Road where we had previously left off. The vegetation and growth everywhere was spectacular! I cannot get over how much everything comes to life after a period of heavy rains. Speaking of coming to life...we encountered one rattler across the trail pretty quickly into our hike and then at about 2.5 miles in, I entered a sandy wash & saw one rattler sprawled out in the wash (not rattling) and backed up without looking and heard another one rattling (they were right behind me)! It was an eventful start to our hike, for sure! Luckily, we did not encounter any more rattlers. There was a large snake crossing the exit as we were leaving Gabe Zimmerman but they did not have a rattle. Whew! Aside from the excitement, it was a beautiful beautiful hike, mostly flat, and the area around Colossal Cave was especially cool! We went to Colossal Cave after our hike & took the "Ladders Tour" which I highly recommend. Can't wait to come back and explore Colossal Cave area some more. No coatis came out to play. Hopefully next time!

Lots of chores today, Rug weaving, sewing hiking clothes, a little upholstery and furniture repair and cleaning the house but managed to get a short hike in at the end of the day. What a perfect day for a late day hike. The temps were in the mid 70's, slight overcast and a light breeze. We headed to an area close to home, Cienega Creek and did the Arizona Trail to Posta Quemada Ranch. We finished the hike just before sunset about a half hour too soon. The sunset was spectacular, just the right amount and type of clouds. If we delayed our hike a bit we would of enjoyed the sunset while hiking instead of driving down I-10 with the sun in our eyes going to a restaurant for dinner. Oh well can't plan everything perfectly.

The desert was quite green with the ocotillo and creosote in bloom. A few hedgehogs were also blooming. Did not see any agave blooming, maybe they are going to skip this year. Probably the most interesting thing on this trail are the limestone rocks. Quite a variety of Permian, Mississippian era with a few from the Cambrian. Lots of variation and color. At the saddle overlooking Posta Quemada Ranch we stopped to observe the vultures taking turns flying over the saddle low and catching the breeze. They were only about 20 to 30 feet off the ground and when they crossed over the saddle and hit the breeze they would come to a complete stop and just hang in mid air. They took turns doing this. There were about 10 vultures all waiting for their turn to perform this act. Looked like aircraft in a holding pattern over the airport waiting for their turn. I think they were having a contest to see who could be suspended in mid air the longest. The winner probably got the dead rotting carcass of some animal. Looked so interesting I told Ginny I wanted to try it but there were no rocks high enough for me to jump from.

I did a short 4 day exploration of this AZT section. Since I had spine surgery in Nov,
I had to cut the trip into two day out and backs centered near Colossal cave.
Was great to be there again, love the folded structure. Weather was cold and
windy, not much water out there. After that I made a short day hike out by the
AZT tiger mine trailhead. Back for more next week ! If anyone needs info on
getting back to backpacking after spinal fusion let me know ! haha
unfortunately the injury was from some of the crazy trips logged here
previously with 6+ liters water !

Stayed in the Colossal Cave Park, and decided to hit a couple of miles on this trail. Did miles 6.40 to 8.5. Lots of mountain bikers today. The sun is brutal in these southern stretches of the AZ Trail. I wonder why the water spigot at La Sevilla isn't listed as a water source here. I tried it, and there was water. I would guess it is safe to drink, but I didn't need any since I was just doing a short day hike.

This was the first of a four day trip of passages 8, 9 and 10. Got a late start as I only had to get to the border of Saguaro National Park. Loaded up on water at La Selvilla picnic area in Colossal Cave Mountain park, and made my way to my camp site in Rincon Creek, to begin the tough climb up Mica Mountain the next morning.

Kelly and I hiked an out and back, backpacking over night. We knew it would be warm, but this segment didn't require a shuttle or water cache. We began by hiking in to the furthest campground in the Colossal Cave Park and set up camp. Then with light packs we hiked out to Hope Camp and back. A bit of a grind though not as bad as anticipated. Most of the trail is pretty nice. Good views of the Rincons and some big healthy saguaros.
The blue moon didn't rise over the mountains until 7 PM so we missed the best of it. Sure was bright all night.
We knocked out the return trip in breezy warm morning conditions, stopped in Vail for breakfast burritos, then home.
Another very good trip. Thanks Kelly. :)

john and i did azt #8 as an out and back overnight starting from gabe zimmerman
got going around 0630 saturday morning in chilly temps
backpacked to la selvilla campground where we set up camp
continued with lighter packs to hope camp and took a break
temps were warm and there wasn't much shade, so we headed on back
long day hike, but a good choice based on water availability at the campground
the blue moon lit things up all night and temps seemed warmer at dawn than at dusk
coffee and breakfast while packing up, then back to the trailhead with lighter packs
at fito's for breakfast burritos before ten, home early
nice way to do these, as i need to practice backpacking
this was a more scenic passage than #7
the last few miles before hope camp couldn't be easier hiking, even on the return
saw quite a few mountain bikers both days
love the view of the rincons
everything was bone dry
didn't take many photos, thought i had one of the rincon view
thanks for another good trip, john
*mileage seems high

The weather is suppose to be bad starting Monday through the rest of the year so if I'm going to get the 6.5 miles in to get me past 700 miles for the year I better do it today. I chose to do a portion of the AZT from Pistol Hill Road to Colossal Cave. I have done this before but it was over 6 years ago and the last time it was really hot. This trail is close to home, within 10 minutes and today's weather was perfect. I wasn't trying to boost my AEG which is a good thing because this is a fairly flat hike, in fact I was surprised it even had 600 feet of AEG. I guess if you do enough in and out of side canyons it will add up. As for reporting; water-none, wildflowers-one but I think it was confused, Autumn foliage-done. The trail is in excellent condition, only got off trail once and that was in the park along the road and I was day dreaming and missed the obvious sign indicating the trail exits the road. This is a nice hike if you are just looking to get out for a few hours to avoid doing the chores at home and when you do get home you won't be too worn out to do the chores you were avoiding..

My sister and I did a Short explore along the Arizona Trail at Cieniga Creek. I wanted to see the trains as they head either East or West through this canyon. If we were lucky might even get to see a double whammy, trains going in both directions at the same time, truly a spiritual experience as some might say. Spirituality probably not but it sure is an exciting experience. Hiked about a mile north along the Arizona then returned and explored a little along the creek. Cieniga had a light flow. The cottonwoods had dropped their leaves with the exception of a few clingons (not the Star Trek type). No trains though which I thought was odd for the 1.5 hours we were in the area. We had headed up Cieniga creek about 5 minutes from the bridges when it happened, two trains entered the canyon one from each direction. Damn, kind of like the phone that never rings until you leave the room. We did scramble up out of the creek and caught a close up of the East bound then ran along the track to catch the West bound as it was just finishing upon the bridge.

The Arizona trail along here is in excellent condition, this isn't a trail it's a highway. There is even a cross walk complete with a button to push when you cross over the frontage road, new since I was on the trail. With all the horse riders on this trail I guess they thought it would be a good idea. I believe this is the only one along the Arizona Trail (not counting the portion that goes through Flagstaff).

Neither of us was up to a planned 10 mile out-n-back so we figured we'd turn back at the 3 miles. We stopped for a short break just past 3 miles then took the 'mountain bike bypass' on the return leg. Just a teaser for a future AZT Passage #8 hike for Tracey.
