Up via the 5.4 Headwall Route then on to the superb SE Corner route on the Monk - great setting, fun moves, impeccable rock. Also did a few laps on Sleazy Street - 9 bolts, easy climbing and a short crux but lots of small loose rock. Then up to the summit of Camelback for some quality cardio.

12 quick draws to first set of bolts
Headed out to Camelback for a quick afternoon MLK Day climb. On-sighted Donamatrix because it was too windy to do the praying monk. A fun lead! The height, howling wind and petrified mud holds made it a little heady today.

I got a new easy lead in along the Headwall on the way to the Praying Monk. I think we may have walked up it yesterday, but it only took ten minutes to get the rope out and run a line for Jackie. I think beta says there is six bolts to the top, but I only used four quick draws, its a pretty light climb, I did it with a big backpack loaded down with water, beer and coffee.

The Praying Monk is a fun climb with cool summit and I enjoyed it again. I led the route and then top belayed for Jackie as she followed and cleaned it. We enjoyed the summit with a fun couple, passed around a little wine and watched the clouds closely. Then it was the fun rap down. Jackie was not a huge fan of the hanging rappel, but I think its kind of fun.

On the hike out we were lucky enough to watch four BASE jumpers take some jumps. It was pretty spectacular.

Grad climb for AMC Basics course. Climbed up headwall via rope (unsure of route) and then hauled up to the monk. Was one of four students climbing. Didn't have any issues on the first ten feet, though the nerves kicked in as soon as I rounded the edge. Had one part halfway up that I had to stop and think about before committing. Overall it seemed much easier than the Sven / Magma days, though I could be just getting used to my climbing legs. Great feature of this route - at the bottom we were in shade all day long, made waiting for the first two climbers downright pleasant.

Another great day of climbing on Camelback. Got to the mountain around 1 PM and headed to the Sugar Cube to teach a new climber the basics of rappelling and ropework. The Headwall was full of climbers when we got there, but by the time we were ready to do some climbing almost everyone had cleared out. Overall a great afternoon of climbing.

Care must be taken to not knock rocks loose on your belayer the rock quality is poor .
Took this route to gain access to the praying monk . was solid route the crux feels much harder then a 5.6 but it is.

Tojo, James and I had planned to meet up with Claire, Rob, and Hannah and do some climbing out at QC. However, the road was closed due to an early morning fatality, so we turned back around and headed back to town. On the way there we decided to hit the Monk, since James and I had never been.

I "led" the first pitch, which apparently is just the Headwall route. I've scrambled up it before but Tojo was setting draws on the way up, so I figured I may as well start putting a rope through it. James had me on belay by the third bolt, and we continued upwards to the top. Tojo was there, instructing a family on how not to kill themselves. Public Service Announcement: just because you got a rope, two harnesses, and a set of draws for Christmas, does not mean you should assume you know how to climb safely. Tojo gave them a few pointers (such as, don't throw things from the top of the route, clip in so you don't fall, learn how to tie in.... etc.) and then we jetted off to the base of the Monk.. you can only take a person so far.

Tojo led the East Face, and James went second on a bight. If this counts as a multipitch, it's James's first one. He climbed it with ease and disappeared over the top of the face. While I waited, the family from earlier appeared and then watched as I readied myself and climbed up. The climb itself is pretty straightforward and fun. I met the guys at the top, backpack of beer on my back. We toasted and drank, then rappelled back down to the bottom. The two kids from the family were already climbing with some obvious backclips... we may have muttered something to them, but ultimately it's their decision. We rappelled down the gully and joined up with the trail to the TH. Celebrated at Boulders with pizza, tacos, and barleywines... great climbing days come with great appetites!

made it outside for a local friday afternoon climb instead of hitting the rock gym
low 70s and no one else climbing that we could see
john led the monk for the first time, i followed and we rapped down
then i led and john followed
this is a classic phoenix climb featuring good hand and footholds, some exposure, great views and a much different perspective of camelback than hiking echo canyon
a little windy and hard to hear each other on the top belay
forgot to bring my camera on the actual climb :(
thanks, john - had a great time :)

rated 5.6 or 5.7 depending on the source
first time on the monk this morning
my only concern about this climb was the parking situation
met john right after work and we had the good fortune to find someone backing out as we pulled in
hiked up to the headwall and warmed up on a 5.1 route that gives you access to upper level
led the east face, although john was able to clip the second bolt, so the first part was on toprope
some exposure, and a little run out in a couple places, but not difficult climbing
super views at the top and a nice rap off the south side
pure fun on a phoenix classic :)
had overcast skies until we were off the route, then the sun came out and it heated up fast
looked around at some other routes then headed down
john treated for breakfast at another phoenix classic, the old brass rail
thanks, john - great to have done this one
right in town, too

This was the last event in my week long celebration of turning 65 and still able to do outdoorsy things. Two days hiking and 5 days climbing with friends was the perfect week punctuated by climbing a Phoenix classic. Talk about luck, we had a parking place at Echo, clouds covering us while climbing and the climb routes all ours. Also picked up some beta from a group that had done three Gargoyle wall routes while we were playing on the monk.

The monk was the first real ourdoor climb of mine a couple of years ago. I remember almost nothing except being terrorified :scared: with the exposure and the "hard" moves needed. This time it was a ton of fun and the only issue with the moves was the questionable rock. One should not climb Mt Lemmon the day before Canelback since you get used to every pebble being bomber and every slab a wall of superglue....but I survived and nothing came loose in my hands. Not the same for the feet as the approach is marbles with ballbearings lubricated with sand :yuck:

As always Kelly was great to climb with :worthy: and her support priceless :thanx: .

I have no idea how to post a climbing post, so I'm just winging it! Did 180' rappel off the Headwall, and had to climb up it to get there. Also did a couple on the rescue rock 1st.
