Fun climb with John.. I hadn't been on rope in almost two years except for rappelling with Joeyb a few months ago. Thanks john for all your help. The only downer was an obnoxious bee :x

climbed with Bob to reintroduce him to outdoor climbing. Rapped down from the top and then put Bob to work on Unknown which he got up without a lot difficulty. Great accomplishment given the difficulty of the start and crux

I climbed Unknown and took a shot at totally trad. I couldn't pull the start but started on unknown instead, Then traversed over to totally trad to finish and clean anchors. Lesson learned is don't gym climb the night before a hard outdoor climb :(

We checked the rest of the wall to try to identify the rest of the moderates. Found two which both looked like no TR and tough leads but maybe next time.

Thanks Bob for patience climbing and great belay work.

great day for climbing as we got a couple routes in before it gets hot.
dead dobie has always been hard for e but today I managed both moderates. Left the draw in the truck so didn't get a chance to lead anything. Maybe next time.

dead dobie wall was the first place john and i climbed outdoors two years ago
thought we would make a return visit today
went up a scree-filled approach slightly off the climber's trail to the base of the wall : rambo :
i first attempted to lead unknown #2 but chickened out at the third bolt
after climbing it twice on toprope, i would try it again next time
redirected our rope to totally trad, which is anything but
nice roof to pull at the start, then a solid, sustained face route with a couple of bulges
not sure why i don't have a triplog from last time, but from what john wrote, i didn't get the route cleanly and was able to do so today
i liked the rock and the climbs better than i remembered
there are several more routes, provided we can get to the anchors to set a toprope
we had shade until about 1:00 p.m.
there were a few gnats :x
after the sun heated things up, we descended on a much better trail
hit the carolina's on cactus and cave creek for lunch
this location is a lot nicer than the one i frequent in the hood
thanks for a fun time, john
i enjoy these every other friday local outdoor climbs

could not pull the start but provided entertainment for kelly as well as some beta
return visit to dead dobie. cleanly climbed unknown which has been a project for years. I couldnt pull start of totally trad so I have a reason to return. still trying to figure out an anchor for the chimney that doesn't totally risk life and limb.

we had the place to ourselves except for the chuckwall baby and a few bugs. Enjoyed lunch at Carolinas

Thank you Kelly for great day

Dead Dobie Wall on the West side of Look out mountain is an intown climb that offers a number of routes from moderates to 5.11 plus. I like this area because you can easily set up top ropes without having to lead the pitches. This makes it a great place to take that first step out of the gym. The routes are short with the longest being 70 feet but the wall is high on the mountain which gives a great view and a bit of sense of exposure. A couple words of caution however. There is a lot of loose rock and helmets for belaying is a real good idea. This is also an older area and the ratings are harder than you expect.

We had the wall to ourselves on a Friday afternoon with perfect weather and a really pretty sunset. We set up the heavily used 5.7 called Unknown #2 and rapped down to the base to climb it. Kelly hadnt rapped for a couple of years but had no problem getting the hang of it again. Just like riding a bike. Climbing is another thing and she mastered the tricky start on the first try and scampered up the wall(check her screen name - it fits). I was thrilled to also make this one as a couple of previous tries were not as successful. We both climbed it again cleanly.

We wanted to try the 5.4 chimney Scoobie Doobie but I could not find a reasonable (safe) place to set up the anchor. So I moved the anchor to the 5.8 totaly trad (which is totally sport). Kelly nearly on sighted this one but sadly I could not pull the first move before it got dark. That of course means a future return trip.

The moon over the rocks with the setting sun was beautiful as we hiked off to end a great day climbing.
