I drove out to check out the wildflowers on Peridot Mesa, but made a wrong turn. ;)

The drive is almost more of a challenge than the hike. I'll add info on that later.

You can no longer buy permits at Circle K or the Bashas.

Downed trees block the road almost a mile before it ends, but I don't think previous hikers drove to the end anyway.

The route is well-constructed and easy to follow. I had to fight some deep snowdrifts, but it didn't slow me down too much. The off-trail traverse across the top is overgrown and thick. Stay on the north side and you'll find an easy class-3 chute that gets you up to the summit.

It was pretty hazy today. But this is such a central spot that landmarks from the White Mountains to the Pinalenos, Galiuros, Teresas, Rincons, Catalinas, Pinals, Ancha, Newman, Four Peaks, among others ... were all visible. It was nice to finally see the reverse view from this peak to all those others! :)

Wasn't sure if this was going to be 20 or 2.1 miles. The forecast for the top was 45 degrees. JJ wanted to know if 7 am would work for a meetup. Seriously? Let's go!

We took 556 up expecting the worst since topo list it as 4WD. 4WD is a good idea for the steepness but it isn't rutted or bad otherwise. We went as far as possible until the jeep just slid back down from the light snow.

The hike was about 1.7 miles. Just over 0.6mi to the end of the road then about 1.1mi to the peak. After the road is a nice switch-backing trail. The snow was maybe two inches on the road and got up to about ten inches on the trail. Once on the ridge, it was back in the two-inch range. Soft powder most likely from the storm last Monday night.

As most know snow is my least favorite condition for a hike. Add in cold rock and some bushwhacking and you get the picture. Luckily the peak came quickly. We climbed up one notch that neither of us was thrilled about descending on the west. The climb is maybe twenty feet altogether. There are plenty of handholds and such, just not fun with wet feet and freezing cold hands. The peak is only a few minutes away after the climb.

The views from the peak are incredible. I didn't see a register. JJ dug three rock layers down and found two registers! The warm sunned rock on the top was nice but we couldn't stay there forever. We avoided the west and took a route off the east. There is a six-foot free-fall slide that is likely easier without snow. This east route has more bushwhacking so pick your poison.

Back on the trail, we floated down with easy cushioned steps in the powder.

This is a good one. If I lived nearby I'd hike the entire road up to get in the max elevation. Doubt I'd bother with the peak too much after bagging it once.

10:44 am start
11:32 am ridge
12:48 pm peak
1:15 pm return
2:08 pm trail
2:38 pm finished

Not sure why so few hike this, excellent views and it's not too tough.

This one has been on my radar for some time. I pass by it when taking the Safford/Globe route back from my New Mexico Chile runs. It has a cool profile and a pointed spire up top. The mountain reaches 8282 feet in elevation so it is the High Point of the Northern Santa Teresa Mountain Range.

I didn't expect to be able to drive up the approach road as far as we did. It shortened the hike considerably but that was okay for this trip since there was snow on the ground. I am not a fan of the cold or snow which is why I call Arizona home. Overall this wasn't too bad, but there is some bushwhacking followed by some light scrambling.

Up top there are 4 poles and evidence of a prior fifth. I'm not sure of their purpose but they are there. Under the large mound of rocks in the middle is a register. Just be sure to bring a pencil or pen as there isn't one. I did my best to use a tootsie roll as a crayon and write HAZ on the sheet but it didn't work out so well. Guess I will just have to go back up and sign it sometime. :)

The views from up top are worth the drive not to mention it makes a fun little get away.

Permits are required and run $10.00 for the day. We got ours at the Express Stop in Globe which is located next to the Pizza Hut.

Good times and good company!

This peak is south and east of Bylas on the San Carlos Indian reservation, about 120 miles from Tempe. This is a peak that can be seen from South Mountain, one reason because of its height at 8260 feet. From where I started, there was a rise of 5200 feet. There is no trail and I doubt that any reach the summit for several years. There are several reasons for this. One is that there is no trail. Another is that it is on the reservation and one needs permission, and the third is that is is probably the toughest summit in the state to reach. It took nearly two hours of ascending to reach its summit which is the reservation boundary line. My route was simple. Start climbing and head swiftly and directly as possible toward the top, avoiding thickets of brush, but not clifts. Returned the same route. Back in Tempe mid afternoon.
