This is a fun departure from hiking Flat Top. You use the same trailhead, and hike up about 1.3 miles to the junction with the Robinson Hollow and Murray Basin trails. (Currently the sign is missing.) Then you hike off-trail to the summit of Round Mountain, which is actually a hill, but it's over 8,000 feet, and has enough prominence to make it onto peakbagger lists.

It was mostly cloudy, with the sun peaking through now and then. The snow has melted along the route, and it's a little muddy in spots.

I forgot my cell phone, so no pictures. Not having the phone made me feel uncomfortable. Weird, because I have done thousands of hikes with no means of contacting anyone should I get hurt. I reminded myself of this, and also, that even now, some places I hike have no service. I asked myself if it made me nervous due to my age (almost 73), or due to having someone at home who is not well, or just due to feeling it being missing from my gear, as if I had forgotten my water bottle.

Anyway, I got over it. Then I missed it later, on the summit, when I couldn't take any photos! The view of snow-covered Escudilla from there is amazing.

The peak register I placed there in September 2000 is still there, but is very moldy. I had hoped to see Bob Cardell's name there. Although I thought I could make it out on the moldy paper, I wasn't sure. He was a friend of mine from the So. Az. Hiking Club who has passed away. If you've heard of him from other than peak bagging, it would be from his pursuit of crested saguaros.

The last signature in the register was from 2019. I was able to leaf through the pages and sign my name. I probably should replace it, due to the mold. Especially I should replace the jar. Not sure why it leaked. It is exactly like all the other ones, a small Vlasik relish jar.

This hill is actually on the Arizona Big List of peaks.

Elev 8044 or 8048 depending upon which map you use. From Flat Top trail head at corner of 12th St. and Line St. behind the old sawmill in Eagar, I followed the Robinson Hollow Loop trail approximately 3/4 mile. Where there is a drainage and small canyon visible to the east, I followed this a short distance and then up the steep side of the mountain to its summit. I returned by hiking north to the Flat Top Trail and back down to the west to the parking area.

There is a well-hidden peakbagger's register, placed by myself about 9 years ago. I actually know everyone who has signed it: Me, my son, a local doctor, and two dedicated Tucson (SAHC)
peakbaggers. No one had signed it but me for about 5 years.

Really good views of Escudilla, Flat Top, Milligan Knoll, Murray Basin, and the rest of the area. You will have the place to yourself, almost without a doubt. Combine with Flat Top summit, Robinson Hollow Loop, and for a longer hike, dip down into Murray Basin and hike over to the 7746 Knoll to make a day of it. I actually started from my house and walked to the trailhead to get some miles in. I didn't count that in the stats.
