Day 2 in White Sands. More of a play day then a hiking day, but we managed to knock out this easy interpretive trail and also the shorter Playas Trail just across the road. Then we found some quiet dunes to eat our lunch at and let the puppy run wild.

Checked out all 5 trails. Alkali Flats was probably the best once you got away from the tourists.

Hiked this trail with my girlfriend as part of our overnight visit to White Sands.

This hike was pretty easy as far as elevation and distance go. The only remotely challenging aspect was the difficulty of walking in sand as opposed to hard surfaces.

Navigation was not difficult either but it was somewhat unconventional. Instead of following an established trail you looked for the next marker or sign and walked towards it until you could see the next marker or sign. While we were there it was possible to follow footprints but there were many random tracks from people going off the trail. There were also numerous warnings indicating that foot prints disappear quickly if there is any wind making navigation by footprint an unreliable method.

The weather was pleasant but hot in late October around noon. The stark white gypsum sand reflects sunlight as efficiently as snow so sun protection is required if you are hiking for any length of time.

This trail was distinctive in that it shows the varieties of plant and animal life that have adapted to survive in the dunes. The route is intended to be hiked in the clockwise direction if you are planning to read the informational plaques.

This is a good hike to introduce you to what White Sands has to offer.

took the fast tour around the informative loop... nice little trip. This portion of the dunes is one the transitional edge of the pure sand dunes, and includes meadows and nice views of the surrounding mountain ranges... worth the time
