After leaving the highway, Big Wash Road follows the valley floor for a few miles before beginning a steady ascent. It then levels off at mile 9, where it crosses a saddle at Packsaddle Campground. This is a small campground amongst stunted trees, directly adjacent to the road, with 3 or 4 sites and a toilet. Big Wash Road then follows the contours of the land, more or less, for about 3 miles to the trailhead. Windy Point Campgound is about halfway between the prevoius campground and the trailhead. It is about a quarter of a mile off Big Wash Road, and has 8 or 9 sites and a toilet. Many of the sites are not only wonderfully placed amongst the rocks, but have spectacularly views for miles and miles to the north and west. There is no water at either campgound, but at $4 per night is a great bargain. I spent a wonderful night here to get an early start on the hike and highly recommend it. I was also able to drive everywhere I needed, without difficulty, in a low clearance, compact rental car.
The hike itself is pretty much as described. Cherum Peak is the highest point around and views are fabulous in all directions. Much of the trail is exposed and views are also good most of the time. The trail was easy to follow and the junctions with the jeep trail are well marked. My GPS showed a total climb of about 1000 feet, while I conservatively estimate the total distance to be 5.6 miles. In any case it took me, and most who signed the logbook, about 4 hours roundtrip. I did this at the end of September and it was a little hot, though not uncomfortably. For me it was areally great adventure, in a little used area, as I saw no one the whole time til I had almost returned to the paved road. |
