I was on my to Vegas from Phoenix, and decided to stop off along the way and bag Cherum Peak.

I turned off of Highway 93 on Big Wash Road and drove about 12 miles to the TH -- the drive was about 45 minutes each way. Good tires was more important than clearance on the drive. Big Wash Road makes a loop, and it is better to take the north end of the loop off of 93.

The Cherum Peak Trail is well-maintained and well marked -- it was really nice hiking on it. Just below the summit there was a little bit of easy class 2 scrambling -- maybe about 25 feet vertical.

It was a foggy and cloudy day, which unfortunately limited the views. The clouds broke up a little bit to the north while I was on the summit, so I got to enjoy the views in that direction.

This was an enjoyable, relatively easy hike and I wouldn't mind doing it again sometime -- preferably on a clear day.

There was some Gooding's Verbena at the lower part of the trail, but that was about it for flowers.

Third time doing Cherum Peak and all using the longer east approach. I started at 3:22 PM and it was perfect weather. Not too warm at the start and not too cool at the top.

Short stop on the way to Vegas. I always like the road up to this one, it was in really good shape this time. Cool, cloudy, and breezy when we started, and it stayed that way the entire time. The trail drops a little bit to start, then it's a steady uphill. About halfway up the first hill, my friend thought the saddle above was the top of the peak, he was disappointed to learn that we still had another mile and a half to the top. I tried not to laugh too much. Short scramble the final 20' or so to the top, took a short break, then headed back down. Always a nice hike to stretch the legs along the drive.

In the Kingman area for work wanted to get a SOTA in. Awesome peak with great views. Saw some Cougar tracks near the water tank.

My wife and I set out on this six mile round trip trail at about 5 AM. Hiking in July, this is the appropriate time to start such a hike. Cherum Peak sits high up in the Cerbat Mountains northwest of Kingman. The trail is easy to follow and well marked. Do not expect a lot of shade on this hike. I would say only an eighth of the trail is shaded. Many small oak trees line the trail (like two feet tall) need trimming. Views from the ridge are 360 degrees and beautiful. Mineral Park Mine (no longer active but still huge) also comes into view in multiple spots. You will climb just under 1000 feet (17 feet short) in the three miles. Rock scrambling up the last fifty feet or so is worth it.

July is not the proper time for flowers, but there were still a few yellow, red, and white along certain parts of the trail.

Maybe late December isn't always a great time to hike this trail, but we just had to escape the couch.

It was pretty strenuous for the out of shape (me and my 13 year old dog) but my 14yo managed just fine...running up the hill at the end of the hike is just ridiculous.

Since no one has written anything, I will write a few words about Big Wash Road, the campgounds, and the hike.

After leaving the highway, Big Wash Road follows the valley floor for a few miles before beginning a steady ascent. It then levels off at mile 9, where it crosses a saddle at Packsaddle Campground. This is a small campground amongst stunted trees, directly adjacent to the road, with 3 or 4 sites and a toilet. Big Wash Road then follows the contours of the land, more or less, for about 3 miles to the trailhead. Windy Point Campgound is about halfway between the prevoius campground and the trailhead. It is about a quarter of a mile off Big Wash Road, and has 8 or 9 sites and a toilet. Many of the sites are not only wonderfully placed amongst the rocks, but have spectacularly views for miles and miles to the north and west. There is no water at either campgound, but at $4 per night is a great bargain. I spent a wonderful night here to get an early start on the hike and highly recommend it. I was also able to drive everywhere I needed, without difficulty, in a low clearance, compact rental car.

The hike itself is pretty much as described. Cherum Peak is the highest point around and views are fabulous in all directions. Much of the trail is exposed and views are also good most of the time. The trail was easy to follow and the junctions with the jeep trail are well marked. My GPS showed a total climb of about 1000 feet, while I conservatively estimate the total distance to be 5.6 miles. In any case it took me, and most who signed the logbook, about 4 hours roundtrip. I did this at the end of September and it was a little hot, though not uncomfortably. For me it was areally great adventure, in a little used area, as I saw no one the whole time til I had almost returned to the paved road.
