Beautiful day up at Sunrise. Ran into construction delays on 410 but really only wait once, for maybe 10 minutes. On our way home after 4PM no construction was on-going. Saw some goats and tons of chipmunks today but no bears or marmots. Hiked up to third Burroughs and made a lasso loop by hanging a right at first Burroughs on our return. Just under 9.5 miles so it was definitely a good workout. A fair number of people out on the trail but it never felt crowded. Trail is dusty, dusty, dusty but otherwise in good shape. A nice breeze kept temps just about right and helped keep the bugs away.

Lots of deep snow covers the trail still. Lucky to see a group of mountain goats near Bourroughs 3.

Road to Sunrise closes Monday so it was our last chance to visit this year. Weather was perfect! Blue skies, not too hot, not too cold. Wind wasn't too bad and just some small stretches of snow on the trail. The only thing we could have asked for was more wildlife but while no goats or bear, the year of the grouse did not disappoint. It was our only trip up to Sunrise this year but it was great. A long day on the trail but left satisfied as well as tired. Even though we've done this hike several times, we come home and find we've taken over 100 pictures (although there are a lot of duplicates!). We've had some bad luck with weather and fires this past summer but days like today are why we continue to hit the trails!

A little windy and cold this morning when I got my start just after 8AM. But the cooler weather kept the bugs away and made the hike up a little easier as there is no shade on this hike. Had the top of third Burroughs to myself for a few minutes, just me, a marmot and a pika. Didn't get the bluebird conditions I had hoped for but the Mountain was out. Took the Sunrise Rim trail on the way back to get some different scenery and plus it usually has fewer people (notice I didn't say "few people"). I think this the first time I haven't seen any goats at Burroughs. Wildflowers are just about gone -- not too many left at this stage after the hot, dry summer. All in all, another great day in the park.

Goats, goats and more goats! Saw a herd of about 30+ goats up near third Burroughs. Chipmunks and marmots made their presence felt on this bluebird day as well. Just a picture perfect day to be up on the mountain. One of our favorite Mt. Rainier hikes.

Smoky and windy today in the Sunrise area. I was having flashbacks to my childhood days spent in the Great Smoky Mountains, only today was one spent in the literally smoky mountains. Still, we had good views. Strong wind kept the temps nice and the bugs away. We had been to 2nd Burroughs several times but never made the trek up to 3rd Burroughs until day. It's definitely worth the extra effort. Great views of the Winthrop Glacier. On the way up we saw a huge herd of goats (about 30-40) down to the right side of 1st Burroughs. As another hiker mentioned, the smell of smoke in the air had me craving BBQ all day!

Although the forecast called for partly sunny skies, the weather was actually really nice. Got an early start but couldn't believe all the people on the trail. Bugs were bad at the Mt. Fremont Lookout and flies were an annoyance at Seconds Burroughs where we had lunch along with about 20 other people. Couldn't believe all the people and couldn't it wasn't very windy at all at Second Burroughs. It would have been nice though on this hot day and it would have helped keep the bugs down. A couple big snow fields to cross between First and Second Burroughs but nothing too bad. We had planned to take the Sunrise Rim trail back down to Sunrise but there were signs about steep snow fields. We started down that path anyway but met a couple of hikers who said it looked sketchy and while I had my microspikes, my wife had forgotten hers so we back down toward Sunrise Camp. Will have to come back in the Fall once the bugs are gone and the temps have cooled down. All in all, another great day at the Mountain.

Windy but otherwise great day on the mountain. Saw a group of elk cross the road in front of us not too far from Sunrise point on the way up. Saw a grouse not far from Shadow Lake, otherwise just lots of chipmunks and pikas. No bears or goats today. Gorgeous views as always from the trail and the trail is completely snow free. Wildflowers are pretty much gone and fall colors are just starting to come out.

Wow! What a day and what a hike! Got to Sunrise around 7:45 AM and was surprised to see a fair amount of cars for that hour. Picture perfect weather. Started off by hiking up to Fremont Lookout. Great views but the even in the early morning, the bugs were out. Good thing I applied the bug spray at the car. Trail to Fremont Lookout was snow-free and in good condition. Lots of wildflowers blooming as well. Next up was the Burroughs Mountain trail. Four snow patches to cross before the first Burroughs. First I did in just my boots but since I had my micro spikes, I used them on the next three snow patches. Views from the top are great. Onto second Burroughs were the views were even better! Two snow patches to cross but they were do-able in just boots. Views at the top were fabulous -- there's even a nice rock chair to relax in and soak up the views. A group of three continuing on the Burroughs trail alerted me to some mountain goats down below. Hiked back down and took the Sunrise rim trail back to Sunrise. Parking lot was jammed, backed up to park. The park entrance was packed, too. Almost a half mile traffic jam to get into the park. Had a blast on the trail today!!!
