A week-long trip to the North Rim included a one night backpack on this little gem of a trail. Perfect for summer (and our lack of recent backpacking) since it stays up on the rim. Such wonderful views!

Saw quite a few folks along the way both out and back, but no one else camping over night. Glad we had set up the tent a ways back off the point since it was a pretty exciting night with strong downdrafts and a little rain. But, no lightning nearby, so sleep eventually came.

One downed tree to step over, but nothing major and the trail was in good shape. The numbered signs mentioned no longer exist, so we just read our info flyer wherever seemed like the best place for each point.

On the drive in saw some deer but no bison. This hike gave views to the south you so could clearly see Kendrick and Humphreys. Nice little hike!

Easy, well-maintained trail, with a couple fallen logs to vault over. A lot of little uphills and downhills throughout, adding up to 1200 feet AEG. The trail passes through a pleasant pine forest with bountiful shade and frequent views of the Grand Canyon, ending in the outstanding vista at Widforss point. We took a lot of little detours to view the canyon from different angles and climb around. There were millions of non-biting insects buzzing around, and I inadvertently breathed in a few of them. Very few people out there today. Numerous beautiful views of the canyon, thick pines along the trail, and pockets of wildflowers in full bloom. On the way out, we stopped to watch a herd of bison that were crossing the road. I didn't know there were bison in Arizona.

Used a long weekend to go camping on the East Rim, but had budget for an easy hike before the following weekend's adventure. So I decided to check out Widforss Trail, since it fit the bill of being easy, potentially rewarding, and open. I was in "tourist garb", meaning I didn't bother with gear, and just wore jeans, t-shirt, and carried a plastic water bottle. This probably annoyed many of the people I passed along the way.

The hike itself was nice; enjoyable views, flat, nice breeze. The views from the end of the trail afforded nice views of the Colonnade, Angel's Gate, Buddha Temple, etc. Always nice getting a new perspective from the rim.

Car camping 4th of July weekend on the North Rim we stopped by Widforss Trail on the way. It's an easy trail in the pines and many good viewpoints along the way. The view of The Transept Canyon is worth the effort on it's own but there is still the view at the end of trail. We took a break at both viewpoints but lunch was at trails end overlooking Widforss Point and rest of the canyon.

After lunch we hiked back the same way enjoying the cool temps. Even had a few rain sprinkles on the way back but nothing much. Great hike if you want to get some miles in without too much effort!

Backpacked out to Widforss. The picnic table is but a pile of rubble now, but I still love the trail. Parking lot was full but the trail was not crowded; seems most hike about a mile to a viewpoint and call it 'good'. So after that saw just 3 folks the rest of the way to the point. The 'off-trail' part is fairly well trodden and not overly brushy.

I have wanted to get back to the Widforss Trail to do Oza and Widforss since we bagged The Colonade in June. Oza, which is Paiute for ¨long necked basket¨ is a striking summit that is hard to miss from any of the popular north rim vantage points and Widforss was recommended to me as a fun summit with a nice class four scramble.

I set off from the Widforss Trail around 4:30 a.m. It was a real treat to watch the sunrise for a second time along the Widforss Trail this summer. Oza really popped in the early morning light. The off trail portion to the, ¨tip off¨ of point for Oza was pretty moderate. A few ups and downs, but generally a pleasant stroll along the rim. A blocky descent takes you from the rim down to Oza´s neck. Then a sometimes steep, sometimes loose and sometimes brushy traverse takes you past Oza´s north tower to the steep gully that leads to the summit. There were several options for the final steep push to the summit, but the best route is generally cairned well. Nobody had signed the register since last August, which was not overly surprsing, one group/person per year seems about right for this summit. I did not spend much time on the summit, before retracing the somewhat tedious approach back to the rim. After reaching the rim, I reunited with a couple of liters of water I had cached and then continued on to Widforss.

I chose to navigate along the rim to Widforss Point vs backtracking to the trail. Most of the off trail hiking was again mild by canyon standards, but I did have to navigate a .1 mile or so patch of New Mexican Locust that was pretty brutal. The final scramble/traverse to the narrow block saddle of Widforss was a little tedious, but not too bad. I chose the ridgeline class four scramble to the summit. I found the scramble a little heady, especially solo, but nothing too noteworthy overall and it was short. I chose the class three option mentioned in the Summit Selects book as having a, ¨possible death block.¨ The death block was definitely present, but I treaded lightly and enjoyed the unique tunnel descent. After hacking my way back to the rim, I returned the way I came.

I teamed up with Sean and Kieth for this nice summit off the north rim. We drove up Wednesday night and started just after 4 a.m. Thursday morning.

This was my first time hiking the Widforss and I was impressed. The trail passes through a nice, rolling forest and is obviously well maintained. We left the trail at 4.5 miles and began a southwest course to the rim. Upon reaching the rim, we dropped down off the west side and traversed over to the break in the coconino and crossed the saddle to reach the base of The Colonnade’s north prow. Some how neither one of us read the approach beta and upon reaching this spot we were not sure exactly what to do. Long story short, we added some length and bushwhacking to our approach and a little easy 5th class. As it would turn out, the base of the prow that we were standing at was the way. We enjoyed the summit for a bit and then returned the way we came. I took a little longer on the hike back to take some pictures and catch my breath, as Sean and Kieth move quick.

A great summit overall, great views, rewarding and I appreciated not having to carry any climbing gear after a streak of seven technical summits. It was humbling and enjoyable to get out with a couple of vet canyon crushers too and hear about their past exploits.

Debated about what rim hike(s) to take while camping with the family near Jacob Lake, and finally settled on Widforss Trail. We did the portion of the trail that corresponds with the self-guided tour brochure https://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/ ... dfross.pdf, which includes 14 markers along the trail--totaling about 4.5 miles. I was a bit disappointed to find that there weren't any actual copies of the brochure at the TH. Should have printed one out beforehand.

In any event, the hike was pleasant and perfect for the family crowd, which included my two grandsons (a 2-year-old and a 4-month-old). That said, there was a bit more up and down than I had led the family to believe, which earned me a mild rebuke from my wife, who made me promise to stick with easy, flat hikes. 8-[

We took it easy, and enjoyed the forest stroll. There were a lot more canyon overlook opportunities than I was expecting. And the "end" of the guided portion of the trail stops at a great little viewpoint of the Transept.

We took a break and some pictures from the outcropping overhangs at our turn-around point, and then made our way back.

About a 1/2 mile from the TH< we came across a nice-sized gopher snake. He was gracious enough to let us take photos and videos but also did his best rattlesnake impression by rapidly tapping the tip of his tail on a nearby log.

Ate lunch at the TH then wandered down to the nearby Harvey Meadow to take a quick look around the natural cave that USFS game warden, "Uncle Jim" Owens, converted into a shelter in the early 1900s, while pursuing the USFS's overzealous efforts to "manage" the mountain lion population.

Overall, a great rim hike with a moderate workout, decent views, and pleasant summer temperatures.

I headed out of Mesa late Saturday night to start this hike at first light Sunday morning.. I had a busy day planned. The drive from Jacob Lake to the North Rim is a favorite of mine. Although it was still dark this time it was still cool. The deer were lined up like I was the cool float in a parade :D . Then as I entered the GCNP the Bison were all over the road : app : 8) . My first encounter with Bison. A little dark for my picture taking ability but it was quite enjoyable just checking them out.
It was just light enough to start hiking when I got to the trailhaed. One motorcycle in the lot. Nice trail and a view here and there. When I got to the picnic table there was a couple (their motorcycle) camped there but up at the table already. I went over to the Widforss point sign and took a break. Todd had said there was a good view looking down at Cheops and I agree. great viewpoint from this side. Only saw four hikers on the hike out and one was a Ranger. Nice start to the day.

This was in my Boots and Burgers book. It suggest going to the Lees Ferry Lodge at Vermillion Cliffs with side note about Jacob Lake baked goods. That's a descent drive and I had one more hike to do up top in the morning so I compromised :) . I had two cookies from Jacob Lake for dinner and stayed Monday night at Lees Ferry Lodge and had dinner there at Vermillion Cliffs bar and grill. The rooms are ok with quaint fishing decor for all the fishermen I suppose that go to Lees ferry. I enjoyed the stay. The cheeseburger and fries were tasty as well. The young Lady working there was an NAU student who's dad works with the Condors which I thought was cool. It was a very enjoyable couple days on the North Rim and the surrounding area.

North Rim opening day!
Jamie was off and I don't start work until the 30th I so we have hiked to "Widforss Point", which is the viewing area that can be easily reached by the five Mile hike on Widforss Trail.

We just headed east, down a 250ft steeeeeep gully/drainage type thing that was FULL of new Mexican locust trees and a few sleeping stands of scrubby oaks.

Thank goodness for the oaks and convertible pants!! I'd hiked the trail without my zipons on but opted to zip em on into pants before heading into the gully...ahhhh!

Followed a beefalo track to the bottom of the gully then right on up the other side. Numerous large fallen trees made the scrambling up through the locust quite easy for me, just walk the logs.

The summit was covered in fossils (Kaibab Limestone layer) and the views were beautiful of course.

The viewpoint we reached is known as "Widforss Overlook" because it Overlooks the TRUE rock outcrop known as "Widforss Point".

So when you hike Widforss Trail you're not really reaching Widforss Point. But I won't tell the tourists that ;)

The true Widforss Point is a class four scramble and climb where a handline might be necessary depending on your skill and the rock condition.
It was so windy today we opted out of attempting the true Point.

We returned from the overlook by sliding down 250ft back into the gully and following a well trampled beefalison track back to Widforss Trail.

Oddly enough it took us 1.5 hours to get from trailhead to the tourist point but two hours to get back...that wind was brutal and exhausting!! That gully though.... phew!

Day 3 of our 10 day trip and we are headed to Point Sublime. The Widforss TH is along the way, so why not get in a good hike before the rain sets in. Wonderfully wooded with stately pines and aspen all golden. Views across the drainage offer sporadic glimpses into the Canyon. The trail is close to all the bustle of the main area of the GCNP's tourist facilities, but seems to get little use except from actual hikers. We saw few people on the trail. With much to do this day, we didn't go all the way to the end, but we got a good dose of Widforss. Definitely a worthy one and maybe one day we will do it all.

This was my main hike for Thursday. Actually did it as a jog with a couple of obligatory stops and WOW moments. There are several fantastic views of the Canyon as you go from one tip to the next. You actual lose the rim for about the last 1.5 miles before reaching Widforss Point, but overall it provides fantastic views of the Canyon. There were actually more ups and downs than I anticipated staying roughly between 8000 and 8200 ft. That, plus the altitude made for a challenging run. Weather was great though. I couldn't ask for better conditions. High for the day was 76. :D Saw about 25 hikers while I was out there, but minimal wildlife. There was apparently an aggressive blue grouse defending her nest that had the trail slightly rerouted. I guess it worked because I never saw her.

Had a tour this morn.
4 Wildland, forest service and NPS firefighters.

They wanted to hike AND learn so I comped them a tour and off we went!

Really cool storms moving in from the West
I was back "in office" before they hit Transept Canyon

Guy hiking back from "Widforss Point"...the trail ends nowhere near the ACTUAL point, but that's. Different triplog...said he saw a Mountain Lion.
I didn't see any tracks or scat but it's not uncommon to see them out that way.
