Deb and I took the day to visit some areas in AZ that we had not been to before.

Crane Petroglyph Site / V - Bar - V Trail #94
1 mile, 68'AEG
This ones only open Friday - Sunday. After checking in at the visitors center, we made three short hike to the panel. reportedly there are 1032 unique glyphs visible, with more buried. The docent at the wall was providing some interesting info and insights into the glyphs. The most interesting part was the calendar that would show the equinox of the four seasons that would determine planting and harvesting schedules.

Montezuma Well
.8 miles, 130' AEG
This was much cooler than I expected. A couple of ruins built into the sides of the well above and one down at water level. Water is from springs and 10% of the water is turned over daily. Water escapes through the travertine to Wet Beaver Creek. It was channeled for irrigating crops.

We hit the Pit House on the way out. Not much to see here if you have seen other pit houses.

Montezuma Castle
.62 miles, 100' AEG
I'd done this one 25 years ago. Worth a stop if you are in the area. This was the busiest of all our stops on the day.

Fort Verde State Park
I'd been here once briefly when Denny and I were hiking the General Crook Trail. Spent some time going through the museum and then the buildings across the street. Had the place to ourselves.

Hauled the kiddos up for a weekend adventure on Wet Beaver. Started at Montezuma Castle. It was a headache to get through the VC and paid up with three balls of pent-up energy, and when we broke through the other side I let them loose on the unsuspecting, mostly docile, public. They zipped through the short walk, peppering everyone with rapid-fire bursts of questions and exclamations, and were shocked by how soon it was over. So we headed up to the Well next. Enjoyed this visit more, with the longer and more rugged walk, plus a larger variety of scenery (ruins and water and more ruins and more water, oh my!). Of course, I hovered around the 3yo, suspecting that any step was one stumble away from her going over the edge and a long tumble into the sink. After this was all done we meandered over to FR 618 and found a fantastic campsite for the night.

Some friends from California spend a few days camping in the Sedona area. I joined them for a day and showed them some sites around the Verde Valley Area. We checked out Montezuma's Well, Montezuma's Castle, Fossil Creak and camped at the Child's Campground.

Short walk with family on Father's Day. First time visiting the Well...very cool place. The hiking is minimal, but the site is pretty cool. My wife and her father have visited numerous times. In fact, my wife use to play in the water channel exiting the Well years....years ago, when she was in Girl Scouts. We weren't able to walk down Swallet Trail (to the interior of the Well) because a colony of bats had moved into one of the caves and the Park was trying to protect them. Still, a very neat place to visit.

Pitstop #2 on our trip to southern Utah. I actually enjoyed the Well (which is free) better than the Castle (which costs). More to explore and see "close up." Seems like this area would have made an ideal living location, leading to all the speculation about why the inhabitants decided relatively suddenly to pick up and leave ....

My first trip to Rimrock, AZ. It's amazing how much fun you can have on these little micro adventures. After we left the Well, we drove about 25 miles on 260E toward Strawberry. I am REALLY looking forward to exploring this region. We stopped off at the Clear Creek Campground area to stick our feet in the water and just listen to the water babble.

I've been wanting to stop here on my way up North for years and decided this morning to go check it out. The well really wasn't what I expected, and I mean that in a good way. It's pretty interesting. I'm not going to ruin the surpise, just go see it yourself!

Attended a Photo Walk held by a Camera Club I belong to.

Since we had Rainy Weather the Day before, I thought it might be Cool to head up Early for Sunrise...Well...Maybe Not... :sl: I had to cut my Speed in half, in Spots along I-17...No Colorful Sunrise, but the Clouds and Fog kept me entertained around Camp Verde until it was Time to Meet Up with the Others.... :D Luckily, I didn't get Rained on or I would have just taken a Nap in the Escape...

Met up with some Friends and other Photographers at the Well. Spent probably 3 Hours Shooting that Area every which way but Loose... After we were done, we went down to the Picnic Area and had a little Food before most of the People left for the Day. 3 of us decided to Hike around and Check Out Wet Beaver Creek...Spent a couple of more Hours dinking around down there and then the other Two took off for Home...The Clouds stayed so Cool all Day that I decided to do some Exploring and Hang around in the Area until Sunset.

I also intended to hit the V-Bar Ranch and take in some Petroglyphs, but it wasn't to be. Got to the Gate and there was a Sign saying they were Temporarily Closed due to Trail Damage...I guess the Rain is Screwing a few things up up here too...So, I just drove further down the Road a ways to see what I could see. Even with all of the Exploring, it was still Early, so I decided to just go into Sedona for Sunset. The Clouds just wouldn't give up and provided a lot of Image Opportunities...But as it got later, Sedona got darker and darker... I Hiked about halfway up the Bell Trail and realized that there would be no Sunset Color on this Day. By the Time I got to the Car it was Raining pretty Good...I decided to head for the Barn and hope that maybe there would be another Sunset Opportunity along the Way...

After a 2nd Attempt at a Sunset Shot at Sunset Point, I've decided that I won't waste my Time here anymore... I think the Mountain just causes all of the Clouds to evaporate on a Moment's Notice at Sunset... ](*,) And so the Day Ended.

It was a good Trip though for sure...And I do believe I've found another Birding Spot in the Area...Lots of Cool Birds that I don't get to see much of in the Phoenix Area...Cloudy Skies made for great Landscape Shots, but not so much for Bird Shots...I'm really starting to like the Verde Valley Area and will be spending more Time up here... :)

Started off the day at Montezuma Well, then the Castle, then Cliff Castle Casino, then Dead Horse Ranch.
I think I like the Well better than the Castle once you've seen it once.
The Castle was a zoo - had to park along the road. Actually heard a man telling his family that Montezuma lived there - really? c'mon people!
Claimed my ten dollars in free play for signing up at the casino, lost it, then left.
Went to DEHO and took more flood pics - still a lot of water! - and spotted a great horned owl napping in a tree.
The end.

Doing a day trip to middle Arizona. Went to the Castle years ago, but never made it to the Well until today. Far more interesting than we had anticipated. Spent some time chatting with an interesting Ranger. Roamed all the trails, backtracking now and then to reexamine some of the area. All was made even more interesting with patches of snow and ice in the shady areas. Even got to hear my favorite bird sound, a cactus wren warbling a serenade to our time down in the Well.

Awesome place!
Hiked around, down, up & behind the well.
Best part was that I had it all to myself for most of the visit!
Enjoyed the pithouse ruin as well on the drive out.
