I forgot what a nice trail this is. As with all three Bill summit approaches, the bottom mile or two is uninspiring, but once making the actual climb, this one is pretty nice. Being in the literal backyard of the FS district office probably helps to keep it nicely maintained, with plenty of freshly trimmed growth.

Clouds kept things cool most of the way, helping to overcome some of the summer humidity. Showers were visible from the summit but nothing imminently threatening. In the last mile thunder rumbled, and the rain finally arrived as we hopped in the car.

It was nice to follow up a late night of perseids with a few hours on the mountain.

Three humans and two dogs: We started by leaving one car at the BW Mtn. Trailhead, then drove the other car to the Benham Trail. Hiked up Benham and down the Bill Will, without walking up the road to the summit. Couple of reasons for not summiting were the stormy weather coming in, and the fact we'd all been there before. You have to walk up a road to get to the summit, no footpath for that last part.

However, my friend had wanted a 9-10 miler, and was disappointed in the distance. But not TOO disappointed, seeing as lightning struck nearby TWICE, once when we were down by the Clover Spring junction, and the second time when we'd reached the car. Not much time at all between the flash and the loud bang. Yikes!

I've always preferred this trail to the Bill Williams Mountain trail. It's more open, there are occasional views, and there are fewer people. I saw one hiker. It was a perfect day. I started at 7 a.m. When I reached the summit, unlike other times, it wasn't windy or chilly. I sat and ate my lunch by the fire tower. This time I didn't go up into the tower, and am not sure if the current occupant wants company, anyway. In the past there was a guy who would call down to you to come on up, because he loved to chat with hikers.

Flowers I noticed were: Yellow columbines, wild roses, Indian paintbrush, some sort of penstemon, and something that looked like sweet alyssum and had lots of bees on it.

I saw elk tracks, no elk.

Back to my old haunts, I hiked to the top of Bill Williams Mountain. It was a very warm day, and the forest is dry. I was surprised when I got there (hadn't been there for a year and a half or more) that there is active logging at the trailhead. Off and on through the hike I noticed a lot of burn piles where thinning had been done.

A word about this watershed. Bill Williams Mountain drainage provides a lot of the water for the little town of Williams. There is kind of a precarious relationship there. If there is a big fire on the mountain it will not only affect the drinking water supply, but also would cause devastating floods in the town. Even now, during a strong monsoon, many streets are flooded up to the curbs. If the forest on the mountain were to burn off, the flooding later on in the summer would push houses off their foundations. So, although the thinning project looks kind of ugly, I hope it will make it easier to stop any future fire.

I haven't kept up with news of the Tinder Fire. I noticed it was a bit hazy off in that direction, but there were no plumes of smoke to be seen.

Can't believe that the heat came back to the valley in full force this weekend so the harem and I made the trek up to Williams to hike Bill Williams Mountain and continue our summer of fire tower lookouts. Nice and cool at the trailhead for our 7:30 start. Lots of tree cover on the way up to keep the sun off our shoulders. A couple of short grown over sections. We were fortunate enough to be invited up into the 7x7 lookout and had a nice chat with the volunteer from Mesa filling in for the weekend. Saw a deer on the way back down about a mile and a half from the parking area. Didn't see any other hikers on the trail today. We did see/hear some UTV's on the road. The skies opened up and the rain started on the way into Williams for lunch. Stopped at the Red Raven, meh, it was ok.

Special Note:
I ended up with the worst poison ivy rash of my life after completing this hike. My legs are almost completely covered from my ankles to my plumbs. I didn't even notice any poison while on the hike.

On Sunday, the four of us headed over to Bill Williams. We started from the Benham trail on the east side and headed up. The trail is in good condition as it makes a solid climb. We kept at it as we headed for the summit. It was another beautiful day and there will be no issues with rain like the previous day on the Sycamore Canyon Rim Loop. Once up top, we took a short break and enjoyed the views. From there we started our descent. I left the group to head down the standard trail heading to the north. I was meeting Kyle who opted to skip this hike since Lily wasn’t feeling too well. This worked really well for me! This was my first time on Bill Williams and I really enjoyed the hike. I would definitely hike here again!

I was a little off my game after a late night of libations in front of the fire and a big hike the day before. But the trail is nice and the grade isn't too bad. We were off the summit long before any storms threatened the area. I like the upper half of this trail more than the north approach, but the lower half seems more boring than the other side. Benham is south facing so gets a little warmer on a sunny day. The road is almost unnoticable ... until there are cars driving on it, in which case it is pretty much always in earshot. So this one will be more peaceful on a weekday or off-season.

Last hike of HAZFest weekend we hiked with Chumley and John up Bill Williams Mountain. We started from the Benham TH on the east side of the peak and first time up this trail. Good trail all the way with some well-constructed switchbacks so the grade never felt overly steep. On top we ate some lunch and went up the tower to see the views which were excellent. No one was in the tower but we were able to climb to the top. After the break Chumley, myself and Kathy headed back down the same way while John took the north approach trail.

The trail has a steady, pleasant grade. I was lucky enough to hit it right as the trail crew had finished clearing all downed trees (except one).

I hit the trail early so I could do all three trails and be home in time for sleep and work. My numbers are kind of a guess except for the time.

Bill Williams is in good shape and only had five downed trees. Juniper,Oak,Pine and some Aspen towards the top with pretty good footing. I like how the Aspen leaves sprinkle the trail towards the top. Always enjoy this one.

First time on Benham and I missed my turn. I was half way to the towers before I caught it. Once on the trail I had no problem staying on it. A lot of oak on the top of this one and mostly Pine towards the bottom. Trail in good shape with a carpet of oak leaves towards the top. I saw some Bear tracks on this one. Route scout startled a Deer and a Fox. I always wonder if Route Scout will keep me from seeing wildlife. I think it might have helped this time. A few views on this one. I hiked it down and then back up to the towers. The best Aspen showing was up there.

I hiked down and up Bixler from there. There is a lot of Oak on this one with a fair amount of Pine and Juniper. A couple nice spots bedded with Pine needles or Oak leaves. The bottom of this trail gets thick and a little spooky if hiking alone. The piles of bear scat and some kind of mangled up hide didn't help. Some good views on this one. The climb towards the top wore me down and I was glad it was my last.

From there it was just down Bill Williams and back to the car. A nice variety of birds out today. Quite a few squirrels and they looked pretty healthy as did the deer and fox. I saw no other hikers the whole day. Great temps as well. A great day out on the trail!

Whew, I am wiped out after this one! But it was gorgeous.

I started at the Benham Trail. Hiked up it to the Bill Williams Trail and down that one to the Bixler Saddle Trail turnoff. Then down Bixler to the saddle. Then I slogged back up Bixler and BW, and summited Bill Williams Mountain. Then retraced my steps down the Benham Trail.

Nice day in high summer. A Sunday, so I did see people. A trail runner and a mountain biker on the Benham Trail (both locals who stopped to chat with me) and two hikers on the Bixler Trail. Saw some deer and a fair number of flowers.

My left foot and ankle are aching. Not sure what's up with that.

So, it took me forever, since I've mostly been doing really short hikes but anyway it was pretty fun. Got me up out of the heat. It is hot (for Williams). It was a little bit cooler on top.

This is the beginning of me training for a Sierras trip in August. I hope this year my boss doesn't pull a fast one on me. Maybe I'll just quit, how would she like that? The last two summers I have tried to go. It's to be with my oldest backpacking pal (first person I went backpacking with at age 18 or 19.) In summers of 2014 and 2015 my boss got all pumpkinish about it, so I canceled both times. Sigh...

Quick stroll in the late afternoon. I got to the "spooky" section--some old-growth pine, alligator juniper and bent oaks--and turned around. It always seems kind of creepy to me there, even in the middle of a bright summer day. I look behind me for...? And now, on a late afternoon in October, with the low sun behind a thick cloud... :scared:

This feeling of mine seemed like a good excuse to turn around. I had work to do at home.

Day hiking just for exercise, on the same trails, over and over...not my thing. This is a very nice trail, but I miss my desert river and the big wide sky.

For me, autumn in the mountains is a melancholy, morose time of year. I can feel the winter creeping up, reaching his cold fingers down from the north. You can have your fall colors, your "leaves." Fall colors make me sad. My "leaves" are: I LEAVE this place in the fall and head for brighter skies and warmer days. Stay tuned!

Ray wanted to get in some hiking at Elevation. I came up with this one that starts at 6,900', climbed to 8,700', dropped to 7,800, and then up to the top of Bill Williams at 9,256. Once again, Dave was a 9:45p the night before addition.

The Bill Williams Trail #21 was as I remembered. It climbs like a mutha, right from the gitgo. There's a few spots where it levels off to let you catch you breath, then back up again. There is some large, thick, old growth that is defiantly not JimH approved.
There are not many views at all on this trail through the trees.

First time on the Bixler Saddle Trail #72. This trail does not get much use, but is in great shape. Finally you get some sweet views to the west. There are some cragily rocky peaks that look like some of you rock hounds would enjoy climbing. We went down to the western TH and then turned around and climbed back up the 900' we'd just descended. I like this trail.

Next we made our way to the Bill Williams Peak at 9,256'. We descended a bit to find a place where it might be a bit warmer to eat some lunch and catch some views. Of course this was the first time on the day it decided to rain lightly. We abbreviated our lunch as we all needed to get moving to get warm.

Next it was the Benham Trail #38. Some how we missed the TH up top and ended up joining it partway down the Tower Road. Another trail with good views and in great shape. Also another that does not get much traffic.

The plans next were to follow some back roads to catch up with some more trails to the north. We ended up traversing around some PP and ultimately walk through a nice neighborhood where some of Williams Upper Crust call home.

After passing the City Reservoir, we found some use trails that met up with the City of Williams Link Trail #124. (Looks like it caters to the MTB community)

We took the Buckskinner #130 to check out Clover Spring and then back to the Clover Spring Trail #46 and back to the TH.

Buckskinner/Clover Spring/Williams City trails, would make a nice short loop if you were in the area.

Perfect temps on the day ranging from 61 a couple of times, to 75. We had a bit of light rain and the Gods were Bowling overhead a few times.

Good times, always good conversations, bickering, poking, jabbing with these gents.

Today's hike was one Bruce drew up to help me train at higher altitude. Both the starting (6900 feet) and highest (9200 feet) elevations would be new personal highs for me.

This was my first time on Williams Mountain. The trails here are very well maintained, at least those that we hiked on today. The rain from the day before made them nice and soft, but with firm footing. Not many views on the way up, but the views from the top are fabulous.

This route was a fun one. We started out with a 2300 foot ascent to a saddle, dropped down 900 feet to another saddle, then finished the uphill portion with a long ascent to Bill Williams Lookout (Bixler Saddle to Bill Williams L.O.). The uphill portion at this elevation is always a struggle for me, so Bruce and Dave let me set the pace. It was a slow pace with lots of breaks, but it made the hike much more enjoyable for me. Thank you Dave and Bruce!

After a break just below the summit, we headed down the Benham trail. At the end of the Benham Trail, we had to deviate from the plan due to private property boundaries, but even that was fun. We got to see some amazing real estate while following some public roads as we headed around the mountain. After a short off trail section, we passed the city reservoir before reaching Buckskinner park, where we took a final break. We headed off trail once more before finally reaching maintained trails again.

From there it was smoothing sailing back to the TH. This was a very fun hike for me but the great company kicks it up a notch to a great hike. Thanks Bruce and Dave. This was a most enjoyable day!

Sure are a lot of flowers up on the mountain! It was a really clear day, and the view from the fire tower and other viewpoints was spectacular.

I saw a kingsnake on the way up. Red on yellow kill a fellow, red on black is a friend to Jack. It wasn't a coral snake.

A bit of rain fell on me on my way down, but I didn't melt.

I had set out to possibly climb Bill Williams Mountain, but very soon I met a hiker and his dog who were hiking a loop, and invited me along, so I went. It was fun.

Since we could hear some thunder in the general direction of the peak it was probably best we didn't go up that high. But we didn't get rained on. While I was gone it rained at my place in Williams, though.
